1821, but apart from the most famous heroes and fighters, the rest remain unknown, unless some document or oral tradition has survived. In the archive of the painter Mikis Matsakis who lived in Athens, the Ministerial Diploma of his grandfather Manolis Matzakis was found for his participation in the Revolution of 1821. Mikis Matsakis gave a photocopy of the diploma to Manolis Matzakis\u2019 great-grandson, the dentist Nikos Matsakis, who lived in Saint Louis MO, who granted me a copy and reads as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kingdom of Greece<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since His Majesty the King<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>charged the Ministry of Military Affairs to award to Manoli Matzakis, who honorably participated in heroic struggle for the independence of Greece, instituted on September 18\/30, 1835, a bronze medal of excellence, this is handed over to him with the permission to wear it on any occasion and for this purpose the present Diploma is administered at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Athens on August 2, 1847<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ministry of the Military<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seal (MINISTRY OF THE MILITARY) \u2013 Signature<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Director of the Office \u2013 Signature<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having no other information, I resorted to the family tradition, as preserved in their memory by the grandson Elias Michail Matsakis, hearing from his father, the dentist Nikos Matsakis, hearing from his grandfather Nikolas Emm. Matsakis and my mother Zoe Cassotis, hearing from her grandmother Zoe Matsakis-Alexiadis daughter of Manolis Matsakis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to family tradition, Yiannis Matzakis, father of Manolis Matsakis, was of Maniatian origin, but an ancestor of his went to Crete where he changed his surname with the \u201cakis\u201d ending. But talking to the president of the Pan-Lakonian Federation Theodoros Pavlakos, he explained to me that at that time many Cretans fled to Mani and Maniates to Crete to avoid the \u201cvendetta\u201d that prevailed in their places, that is why there were many Cretans in Mani with \u201cakis\u201d ending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From Mani, Yannis Matzakis went to Syros and from there to Karpathos, where he married a certain Kyrania from Pyles, they had many among them the firstborn Manolis, who as soon came of age and after the Revolution began, he returned to the Peloponnese and took part in the struggle of the Greek Palingenesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the end of the Revolution, Manolis Matsakis returned to Karpathos, married Ernia Chatzimanoli with whom they had five sons (Yiannis, George, Nikolis, Elias, Michalis) and three daughters (Zoe, Kyrania, Marigo). As can be deduced from the tax records, Ernia was one of the great landowners of Karpathos. In 1876, Matsakis paid 150 grossia, which ranks him among the highest taxpayers, due to his wife\u2019s property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While his wife dealt with the management of her property, Manolis dealt with wood carving, and he built the iconostasis of the Metropolitan Church of Aperi. He also built the iconostasis of Saint Spyridon in Fry of Kasos. As Manolis\u2019 daughter Zoe told her granddaughter Zoe Cassotis, when her father was building the iconostasis of Saint Spyridon, they moved to Kasos for a considerable period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the family tradition continues, after the end of the Revolution and his return to Karpathos, which was under Ottoman rule, Manolis Matzakis was sentenced to death for his participation in the Revolution of 1821 and was arrested to be sent to Rhodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But before he was sent to Rhodes, he asked the Turkish officer who came to arrest him if he could give him a gift to remember him. The Turk accepted and Matzakis presented him with a carved walnut trunk. As soon as the Turk saw the fine carvings, he said to him: \u201cIt is a sin for a craftsman like you to die. You have good hands, but a crazy head. I will spare your life if you promise not to get involved in politics and revolutions again.\u201d He accepted, and when he was taken to Rhodes, the Turk intervened, and he was released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He died in 1889, and on his grave in the cemetery of Aperi they placed a copper vase to put flowers, and after his exhumation the cup went to his great-grandson dentist Nikos Matsakis, and now is in position his son Elias Nicholas Matsakis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From Karpathos, many of Manolis Matzakis\u2019s descendants, who in the meantime changed their surname to Matsakis, moved to Constantinople, Smyrna, Ikaria, Egypt and Cyprus, and from 1900 onwards to Attica and America.
