However, the contribution of two other Dodecanese to the exploration of the Sacred Well of the Mayas in Central America is almost unknown. As important as Heinrich Schliemann is for the excavations in Troy and Arthur Evans for the excavations in Crete, Edward Herbert Thompson is equally important for the excavations he made in Central America for the Mayas civilization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beginning in 1885, he devoted half a century of his life excavating in the Yucatan Peninsula on the western side of the Gulf of Mexico, and especially in the ancient city of Chichen-Itza, where, among other things, he discovered the Mayan pyramids that had been jealously hidden by tropical vegetation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cWell of Sacrifice\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thompson researching the Madrid library found a handwritten book by the missionary, and later archbishop of Yucatan, Diego De Landa entitled \u201cRelacion de la Cosas de Yucatan\u201d. In his book, De Landa described the sacred city of the Mayas, Chichen-Itza, paying particular attention to the Sacred Well, the Cenote, which in the language of the natives means \u201cWell of Sacrifice\u201d. According to De Landa\u2019s account, a tradition had been preserved among the natives of Mexico concerning the \u201cWell of Sacrifice.\u201d In times of drought or some other natural disaster, the priests of the holy temple of \u201cKukil Can\u201d would go in procession, with psalms and music, to the \u201cWell of Sacrifice\u201d, following the Sacred Way. With them they had captive youths, of their most illustrious enemies and rivals, beautiful maidens, and articles of great value. When the procession reached the \u201cWell of Sacrifice\u201d a special ceremony was held at the shrine of the \u201cGod of Rain\u201d which was located on the edge of the Well and from there they threw the young men, women and other objects to appease the angry god who resided in the bottom of the Well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier and contemporary scholars of the time considered De Landa\u2019s descriptions to be myths and figments of his imagination. But Thompson took it as a reality and after several years, at the beginning of the 20th century, he discovered the Holy Well described by De Landa: it was one of the depressions in the area created on the surface of the earth by the subsidence of the subsoil (sinkhole). and decided to explore it. He found financiers, but none of them wanted to take responsibility for his life, \u201cif you want to kill yourself you can find a better way\u201d, they told him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nicholas and Panormitis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Thompson secured the funding, he went to Boston and took scuba diving lessons from Captain Ephraim Nickerson of Long Waarf. Later he himself recounted: \u201cas I found out I became a mediocre, not a very good diver\u201d, but for the exploration of the well an experienced diver was needed. At that time, even before the massive migration of Greek sponge divers to Tarpon Springs, Florida, several Kalymnian sponge divers immigrated to Bahamas, engaged in sponge fishing and soon their fame spread throughout America. So there, in the Bahamas, Thompson went to find a diver. He asked and learned that the most experienced sponge diver in all of the Bahamas was Nicholas. He signed an agreement with him and his assistant, Panormitis. The place of their origin is not mentioned, but from the names Nicholas and Panormitis and the presence of Kalymnians in the Bahamas, it is deduced that they were Kalymnians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thompson installed a crane at the rim of the well on the right side of the sanctuary, from which, according to De Landa, the Mayas dropped the brides, youths, and valuables into the well. With the help of the crane, he cleaned this part of the well from the trees, soil and stones that had accumulated over hundreds of years. They built a huge wooden raft and lowered it into the well with the crane. On the raft they put the diving suit, the air pumps and the other accessories needed for the dive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Panormitis took his place near the air pumps from where he directed the natives and was helping Thompson and Nikolas put on the \u201cdress\u201d and bronze helmet. Everything was ready for the dive. The natives, watching speechless, lost their color, not believing they would see them again. The \u201cRain God\u201d would not let them return. The natives believed that at the dark bottom of the sacred well, where the almighty God lived, there were great snakes and terrible monsters and if anyone dared to reach there they would not let him return alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>They remain alive<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Slowly Thompson descended the ladder fixed to the side of the raft and was soon lost beneath the copper-green water. Only the air bubbles that came out of the skull valve and reached the surface were visible. In the first three meters the sun\u2019s rays penetrating the water changed color from yellow to green and dark red, then total darkness. In a little while, as if more experienced, Nicholas dived and, in a few minutes, he came next to Thompson and shook his hand. They were the first people to reach this point alive and still remain alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They took with them an underwater flashlight to see, but it was completely useless, because near the bottom the water was thick, something between soup and mud, they had to work in the dark. They also had an underwater telephone with them, but they abandoned that as well, because they found a better way to communicate with each other. They discovered that at the 20\u201330-meter depth where they were working, when they stuck one nose of each other\u2019s skull together, they could talk and communicate. Their voices seemed to come from beyond, lifeless and colourless, but clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cFertile zone\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The opening of the Well had an elliptical shape with an average diameter of around 57 meters and from the rim to the water around 20-24 meters. Near the surface of the water, until the thick water ended and the mud began, they could move with relative ease. About ten meters below the surface, the mud became so thick that it held huge roots and tree trunks. Five meters below the mud was so solid that it held pillars and large stones from the walls of the sanctuary that collapsed and fell into the well. In this five-meter-thick mud, which Thompson called the \u201cfertile zone\u201d, he looked for the evidence that would verify the Mayas tradition, as described by De Landa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside the \u201cfertile zone\u201d they found the skeletons of three women. Around her neck was a necklace made of beads. Some pieces of the clothes worn by the three unfortunate victims were found in the mud. Then they found carved stone figurines covered in gold and copper leaves, pieces of resinous incense, several skeletons, arrows, and pieces of cloth, all great archaeological value. A number of gold objects were found, most of them a mixture of a small gold content, there were a few made of pure gold, but their value consisted in the figures and symbols carved on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thompson donated the archaeological artifacts he found at the \u201cSacrificial Well\u201d to the Peabody Museum in Boston, where they are now on display. But most of these archaeological finds passed through the hands of two of our compatriots, whose first names we only know.
