From above the rock supervises Saint Sunday<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As soon as the pilgrim sees the white chapel on the huge rock, he is impressed and thinks that he will talk to God. From Greek mythology we know that the twelve gods of Olympus lived on the highest mountain of Greece and on the highest peak Zeus had his throne. In England and France people attach religious significance to the huge rocks, called Menhirs, which stand upright and face the sky. The sacredness that the Jews gave to the tops of mountains and hills is also known from the Holy Bible. The castle built by the Incas of Peru in Cusco on the hill of Sacsayhuaman was dedicated to the eagle, and on the same hill the Spaniards placed the huge statue of Cristo Blanco (White Christ). In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Portuguese erected the huge statue of Cristo Redento (Christ the Redeemer) on top of Corcovado Mountain. In Corfu, on the top of Angelokastro, the small church of Saint George is built, likewise in Karpathos, on the top of the Castle of Aperi is the small church of the Cross. These are examples that show that the Karpathians considered the rock on the Patella peninsula on which the church of Saint Sunday was built to be sacred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fact that the church is built high on a rock, refers to \u201call-seeing\u201d gods and saints, who must be up high to have a good supervision of the world. Jupiter at the highest point of Olympus, the God of the Christians in the heavens. Previously there was no easy access to the chapel, so the pilgrim had to climb through the rocks. You had the impression that the people who built the monastery did not want to disturb the sanctity of the rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to tradition, the original church was built before piracy prevailed in the area. The rock on which the small church was built was in the field of Fotoulia of Andreas Diakantras, who was highly respected, he was the mukhtar (mayor) of Aperi, and married the great landowner of the village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tradition states that one day when Fotoulia visited her olive trees field, which was around the sacred rock, she saw light coming from the stones, and when she got closer, she found the icon of Saint Sunday, and in front of her was lighting an oil lamp. She told to a shepherd who was grazing in the area, but he mocked her by saying: \u201cyou too who believe in wood\u201d and with his machete he holding gave an ax cut to the image. Immediately the sea around Patella turned red and the shepherd\u2019s flock was lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As soon as Fotoulia returned to the village and narrated the miracle to her husband, Diakandras decided to build the current small church with the help of other Aperitans, and over time the reputation of the monastery grew. Later the descendants of Fotoulia: Fotini Pothitou, Sevasti Kambourakis and Fotini Lenti granted parts of the field where were built the \u201ccells of Saint\u201d, a spacious yard, water tank, toilets, and later parking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The English Administration allowed the raising of the Greek flag on the Holy Rock. Karpathos breathes the air of freedom, 1946.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

During the war years, the Italians opened a dirt road leading to the hill of Patella which and the Germans fortified. After the war, with carved stones from the German fortifications, was built the stone staircase that makes it easier for pilgrims to climb up to the chapel and built a protective wall on the southern side of the sacred rock enlarging the monastery\u2019s courtyard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apart from Aperitans and Pigadiotes, who always considered and honored Saint Sunday as miraculous, and the Menediates had great respect for her. Every morning when they woke up and turned their gaze to the East, they saw the little church protruding from the top of the rock. The following passage from Menediatians lullaby (in free translation) shows their respect for Saint Sunday:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I was young, I got sick, and my mother asked for help from Saint Sunday. Since then, I heard her saing to me: \u201cwhen you grow up you must go every year with a large bread to pay your dues to Her Grace\u201d. When I was ten years old, it was time to pay back. From the previous day, my mother made a large bread, wrapped it in a decorated scarf and found a neighbor who would go in the evening with her mule to Saint Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Late in the afternoon the neighbor passed by our house, she loaded the bread on the mule, and we started for Saint Sunday. We took the road and once we reached Damatria we followed the path to Katsuna. We entered the pine forest, passed by Mertos and reached the top of Patella. As soon as we came out of the forest, we found ourselves on a plateau and a thousand meters in front of us I saw for the first time the white church on the rock. When we got closer, the neighbor tied the mule under a pine tree, took down and kept the bread to give it to my mother the next day, and released me: she had completed her mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I arrived in front of the huge rock, I stopped to see how I would climb. Soon other pilgrims came and following them I climbed through the rocks and found myself in the monastery full of pilgrims. I saw what the others were doing, lit a candle, kissed the icons one by one and said a prayer. I felt a sense of relief, \u201cI\u2019ve paid my dues\u201d, I thought and calmed down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I went out into the courtyard and watched the pilgrims coming to the church, I singled out a paralyzed little girl of seven or eight years old who was trying to walk with her hands. In a little while the priest came, made vespers and the whole night prayers followed. The kneeling women were asking for the help of the Saint Sunday, together with the paralyzed little girl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The men were sitting in groups on the sidewalk, but most were lying in the church\u2019s small courtyard. They were discussing the history of the monastery and the miracles of Saint Sunday. I remained speechless listening to the conversations, sometimes of the one and sometimes of the other group, recording them in my mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suddenly, at dawn, voices were heard from inside the church: \u201cMy Holy Mother\u201d, \u201cMy great Lady\u201d, \u201cMy Saint Sunday\u201d. A miracle had happened: the paralyzed little girl walked. The \u201cshield-bearing\u201d sun was rising from the sea and the dawn was already drawing its rosy veils painting the East: perfect symbolism of human joy and hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it dawned, new pilgrims began to arrive, groups of two or three mules decorated with colorful kilims, loaded with bread and some old man or a small child, ten to twenty people. Most of them came from Afiarti, Exiles, Krithares, Lai, Vrutsa, Vatha and the other countrysides of Menetes and some Arcasians from the Katogyri. The Aperitans came down with their mules to Possi the day before, and stayed in their stables, and the next day went to Saint Sunday. The Pigadiotes came walking from Mertos, just like me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All four taxis in Karpathos were busy, carrying newly arrived Aperitans from America, who had the dollars. About sixty Pigadiotes, mostly children, came with an English military truck. All the pilgrims, around 2,000, were gathered inside the church, outside in the courtyard and around the holy rock. A little further, under the pine trees, were tied 200-300 mules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The liturgy took place in the small church, followed by the blessing of bread in the church\u2019s courtyard, about 180 large breads were brought by the pilgrims made from fresh Karpathian wheat. This was followed by the auction of the icons in the yard of the \u201ccells\u201d, ten icons of Saint Sunday were auctioned. Bidders would take the icon home for a year and on her feast day they would bring it back to be blessed and put it up for auction again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As soon as the auction of the icons finished, the pilgrims dispersed in groups under the pine trees to dine and rest, before making their way back. I went with the English military truck. The road was narrow and difficult, the truck could not take the turn. At every turn we got out of the truck for fear of falling off the cliff. The driver went back and forth three to four times until he turned the corner. We were getting back into the car to get off at the next turn. This happened about a dozen times, only an old man who could not stand climbing up and down stayed in the car with the driver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another Miracle <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During WWII, the Germans fortified Patella\u2019s hill and installing a radar. The Germans suspected that the Allied planes bombing the radar were arranging their course based on the monastery seen from above. One day, then fourteen-year-old Andreas Hatzimichalis who was helping in the German kitchen, lit the church oil lamps with little oil given to him by his mother. At night the Germans saw a light coming out of the church and thought it was a signal for the allied planes to arrange their course. At first, they suspected an anti-Nazi Austrian, but Andreas told them the truth, they reprimanded him without punishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After this incident the Germans decided to camouflage the small church. They took clay and mixed it with black ashes from the cooking boilers and with this mixture painted the church, but the next morning the little church was white. The next day they repainted the church and at night they set up a guard. After midnight the guard saw a black woman whitewashing the church and shot her, but when he got closer, he found the church freshly whitewashed and the woman missing. For the third time the Germans painted the monastery and posted a guard with the same results. The Germans realized that their efforts were wasted and did not bother the little church again. The holes left by the bullets are still visible today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Era<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recent years, remarkable projects have been carried out on Saint Sunday to serve the pilgrims but respecting the sanctity of the monastery and the natural environment. Among other things, the stone staircase was extended and joined with the courtyard of the \u201ccells\u201d, elderly pilgrims can go up to the chapel to worship and light a candle. Around the sacred rock, in the stones where there was a little soil, they planted skins, sphagnum and other native bushes, and in the field donated by Fotini Lenti, a parking lot was created that serves hundreds of cars on the day of the celebration. The asphalt road that connects the monastery of Saint Sunday and Larniotissa ends at this parking lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Karpathians still honor Saint Sunday, flock to its celebration and respectfully participate in the vespers and daily liturgy by the Metropolitan. But a lot has changed. Mules disappeared from Karpathos, pilgrims do not go to Her Grace on foot, but in private cars. The breads are not made from fresh Karpathian wheat milled in a watermill or windmill, fermented in wooded baskets and baked in a stone oven with chaff brought from the mountain, they buy them from the backing shops made from imported wheat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the respect of locals and compatriots continues. As in the past, many Karpathians travel thousands of miles to find themselves in Her grace, to have their weddings and to baptize their children in the small church on the holy rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
