The most central avenue of Florianopolis is named \u201cCapitao Savas Nicolau Savas\u201d, the Kastelorizian who in the 19th century crossed the Atlantic Ocean with a sailboat and founded Florianopolis, one of the first Greek settlements in South America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Savvas, the son of Nikolaos and Evdokia Savvas, was born on March 6, 1858 in Kastellorizo, which at that time was a major naval center in the Eastern Mediterranean. The son of a naval family, he studied at the Naval School of Syros and graduated with a captain\u2019s diploma on August 31, 1878. Three years later he acquired the \u201cWhite Dove\u201d with which he crossed the Atlantic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/a100-1Brazil-a6-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46557\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u0395\u03be\u03c9\u03c4\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03ba\u03ae \u03ac\u03c0\u03bf\u03c8\u03b7 \u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 \u03b5\u03ba\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c3\u03af\u03b1\u03c2 \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u0391\u03b3\u03af\u03bf\u03c5 \u039d\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03bb\u03ac\u03bf\u03c5.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Starting<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a crew of his brothers Stefanos and Michalis and other Kastelorizians he started from his island and on his way to Piraeus he stopped in Hydra where he registered his ship on February 18, 1882. A year later he is in Brindisi, Italy from where he started for his transatlantic voyage on February 2, 1883. In 85 days he crossed the Western Mediterranean, sailed along the west coast of Africa, and reached the Cape Verde archipelago. From there he entered the sea current at the point of the South Atlantic that moves from east to west and crossing the ocean it reached Brazil. From there, sailing along the eastern coast of the South American Continent, he arrived at Montevideo, Uruguay, on April 27, 1883. He first passed through Destero, Brazil, at Santa Catarina, where he stayed for some time because it resembled Castelorizo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the way back he sailed along the east coast of the South American Continent passed the Caribbean islands, and from Florida he entered the current of the Gulf of Mexico and continued sailing along the east coast of North America. With the help of the westerly winds blowing in the North Atlantic he crossed the ocean and arrived in London. He continued sailing along Western Europe and reached Gibraltar. Entering the Mediterranean he sailed west, stopped at several European ports, Piraeus and Syros and ended in Kastelorizo \u200b\u200bon June 19, 1884.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The second journey<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the following years, Captain Savvas continued his journeys from Kastelorizo \u200b\u200bto Smyrna and the other ports in the Aegean, but from the day he set foot in Kastelorizo \u200b\u200bhe began to think and prepare for his second trip to Brazil which began in 1887. In addition to his brothers Stefanos and Michalis, he also took with him his parents, as well as his sister Kyranias and her husband Theodosis Atherinos, as well as his other sister Anastasia and her doctor husband Konstantinos Spyridis and their three children Spyros, Nikos and Evdokia. He also took other Kastelorizians with him, including the captains Agapito Oikonomou and Nikolaos Tzelikis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/a100-1Brazil-a5-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46564\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u0397 \u03c3\u03b7\u03bc\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03bd\u03ae \u03ba\u03b5\u03bd\u03c4\u03c1\u03b9\u03ba\u03ae \u03b1\u03b3\u03bf\u03c1\u03ac \u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 \u03a6\u03bb\u03c9\u03c1\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd\u03cc\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03b7\u03c2.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From Kastellorizo \u200b\u200bhe went to Rhodes where he arrived on October 20, 1887 and continued to Syros where he stayed a few days. Sailing west he crossed the Mediterranean passing Marseille and various Spanish ports until he ended up in Viena De Castelo, Portugal. He stayed there for about a year and learned the Portuguese language, before continuing his journey to South America. Towards the end of 1889 he started from Portugal and following his familiar route he sailed along the African coast until he reached Cape Verde and from there, he crossed the ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Destero<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sailing along the eastern coast of the South American, he passed a second time at Destero, Brazil, where he remained several days. From there via Montevideo he arrived in Buenos Aires, Argentina on February 19, 1890. In Buenos Aires he sold the \u201cWhite Dove\u201d and bought three steamers, Tagus, Vesuvio and Novo Herinero of 300-500 tons each, and put in captains Oikonomou, Tzeliki and his brother Stefanos. With these he made trips between Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil. Thus, he developed great shipping, commercial and other economic activities in these countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1892 Captain Savvas moved his commercial operations and settled permanently in Destero, from where he directed his operations in South America with branches in Montevideo, Buenos Aires and Paranagua in Parana state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/a100-1Brazil-a10-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46565\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u03a4\u03bf \u03bf\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03b9\u03ba\u03cc \u03c0\u03ac\u03c1\u03ba\u03bf Parnaiba (\u03a0\u03b1\u03c1\u03bd\u03b1\u03c3\u03c3\u03cc\u03c2), \u03b4\u03c9\u03c1\u03b5\u03ac \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u03a3\u03ac\u03b2\u03b2\u03b1 \u039d\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03bb\u03ac\u03bf\u03c5 \u03a3\u03ac\u03b2\u03b2\u03b1 \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c2 \u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u03b8\u03b5\u03c4\u03ae \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03c1\u03af\u03b4\u03b1.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u00abParnassus\u00bb.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1895, the Brazilian government granted free 5-10 hectares of land and a tax exemption for ten years to anyone who wanted to settle on the island of Santa Catarina, where many Kastellorizians had settled. In 1896 Captain Savvas bought the steamship \u201cAida\u201d with which he served the main ports of Brazil. In 1901 Captain Savvas acquired from the United States an oil-powered vessel for his operations. Also, in 1905 he bought a huge area of \u200b\u200b42 square kilometers (five times the area of Kastellorizo) near the old city of Palhoca on the South American continent, which today is a huge ecological park, which he named Parnaiba (Parnassus).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1912 Captain Savvas offered to go to Greece to fight in the Balkan wars as a volunteer but was dissuaded by Venizelos himself due to his advanced age. In the same year, Captain Savvas brought 30 families from Kastelorizo, offering them work in his businesses. All these Kastelorizians together with those he brought earlier and later to Brazil settled in Florianoupolis which he built near Destero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, in addition to the Kastelorizians, other Dodecanese and many other Greeks began to arrive. The Kastelorizian and the whole Greek community of Florianoupolis developed and progressed so quickly that on the most central coastal avenue of the city there were mostly Greek houses. After the Second World War other Dodecanese also went to Brazil. The Brazilian government was represented by the Minister of Agriculture, Victor Konder, who stated epigrammatically: \u201cCaptain Sava\u2019s name is linked to the development of Brazil.\u201d Today the \u201cNew Castelorizo\u201d built in Brazil by Captain Savvas has grown into an important city, including the entire island of Santa Catarina, the surrounding micro-islands and a part of the South American Continent with 500,000 inhabitants. Also, Florianopolis is the capital of the state of Santa Catarina, which has an area of \u200b\u200b95,442 square meters. and a population of 6,700,000 inhabitants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hundreds of descendants of Captain Savva and the other Kastellorizians have spread throughout Brazil and are advancing in the sciences, arts, business and politics. Among others, Georgios Lacerdis was in 1950 elected Member of Parliament of the state of Santa Catarina and in 1955 he served as governor of the same state.
