One of these churches is in Pigadia, the current capital of the island, it is dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and is known as \u201cVangelistra\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In ancient times in the current Pigadia was Potideion, where, with the prevalence of Christianity, splendid Basilicas were built. But, with the invasion of the Saracens and the prevalence of piracy, the inhabitants of Potideion retreated to the interior of the island in the fortified area of Koraki, and the Basilicas were destroyed. Later, during the Turkish occupation, the Potideians descended to the foothills of Koraki, in today\u2019s Aperi, and after 1800 some Aperitans began to move around Potideion, which in the meantime renamed Pigadia because of the wells used by the shepherds of the area to water their animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Aperitans were followed by other Karpathians and sailors from the surrounding islands and over time a settlement was created that functioned as a section of Aperi, and with the increase in population became necessary to build a church. According to written and oral information, the church was built in the 1870s. Annoula Mastropanagioti, who was born in 1863, said:&nbsp;<em>\u201cI was ten years old when \u2018Vagelistra\u2019 was built.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;The birth certificate of Manolis Stamatakis states that he was baptized on September 28, 1876 in the church of \u201cVangelistra\u201d. However, there is a Metropolitan document dated February 4, 1879, which states that a committee is appointed to collect money and supervise the construction of the church. Apparently, the church was used for rites before it was finished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As mentioned before, the Karpathians had a special love and respect for the Virgin Mary, and because the central church of Aperi was dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin, the Aperitans decided to dedicate the church to the Annunciation of the Virgin. After all, of the five chapels of Pigadia that are dedicated to women, four are dedicated to Holy Mother (Zoodochos Pigi, Larniotissa, Faneromeni, Kyra Panagia) and the fifth, Saint Sunday, the faithful call it Holy Mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1943 during WWII, when the people of Pigadia were forced to leave Pigadia, going to Aperi they took the icon of Vangelistra and placed it inside the Metropolitan church, in front of the icon of the Holy Mother. The icon of Vangelistra remained there until Karpathos was liberated and the people of Pigadia returned home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Vangela<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The icon of the Annunciation that still exists today in Vangelistra was dedicated by Yannis Karavias who brought it from Russia, and after his wife gave birth to a son, they prayed to Virgin Mary to give them a daughter and they would name her after Her Grace. The Virgin Mary heard their prayer, and the next year Zoe gave birth to a daughter and for the first time, when she was baptized, the name Vangela was heard in Vangelistra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Aperi and the rest of Karpathos, the name Vangela was not common, those who wanted to honor the Virgin Mary named their daughters Maria. But after Vangelistra was built, the Aperitans used to give the name Vangela to their third daughters because according to the Karpathian custom the first two had to take the names of their grandmothers first. There were cases, such as that of Nikolis and Zoe t\u2019Alexaki, who named their second daughter Vangela, because according to Karpathian custom she could not take the name of her grandmother (Zoe) because it was the same as her mother\u2019s. There were cases when first born daughters were named for the Grace of Vangelistra. Eudoxia Nisyriou\u2019s name was changed to Vangelitsa because, when she was young, she fell ill, and they prayed to Vangelistra to heal her. Those who were given the name Vangela passed it on to their descendants, which is why the name Evangelia is widespread in Aperi and Pigadia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Church<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The church was of Byzantine style, it consisted of three arches where the dome of the church was built on the second one and the belfry was built on top of the first arch on the north side and on the south side of the same arch the sailor teacher Meletios Koumpis designed a solar clock. The church was built with kurasan and its floor was laid with sea pebbles decorated with geometric shapes, later it was covered with cement and topped with black and white tiles. A few years before 1900, on the west side of the church, the \u201cCell of the Virgin Mary\u201d was built, where the first school of Pigadia was housed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Little by little Pigadia grew, and the church could not accommodate the faithful. In 1926 they demolished the \u201cCell of the Virgin Mary\u201d and enlarged the church; two more arches were added. The additional space reserved for the women who worshiped separately from the men. On top of this space, they built \u201cGynaikonitis\u201d which housed the school for a few years. On both sides inside the church were pews where the elderly sat in their usual pew. The same with women: the oldest had established position and when someone died, her first daughter took her place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>New Church<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reconstruction of the current church began in 1986 and was completed in five years. The bell tower building was added to the new church where the office of the Metropolitan is located and below it, a continuation of the church hall, a kitchen was built with the necessary accessories and tools and modern toilets were built one floor below. The spiritual center was built as a continuation of the church hall under the church. Since then and to this day, interior and exterior work continues, such as the iconography and the reconstruction of the courtyard with marble railings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Historical events<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On October 14, 1948, kings Paul and Frederika visited Karpathos with the destroyer \u201cAstigx\u201d. The royals with their escort went on foot to Vagelistra where the Metropolitan of Rhodes Timotheus performed the doxology. The road from the port to the Administration building was paved with myrtles. In 1963 Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras visited Karpathos and officiated in Vagelistra, and on October 25, 1994 Vagelistra experienced unique moments with the visit of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Feast&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As soon as the church was built, the celebration of Her Grace began, with the participation of Pigadians and Aperitans who came down with mules and after the Divine Liturgy ate what they brought with them before returning to Aperi. Later, when the feast with food serving was established, the Aperitans would come down the day before, stay in their stables and return to Aperi two days later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The preparation for the Feast of the Virgin Mary began early, the church had to be whitewashed and the doors and windows painted. The iconostasis, the icons, the despotic throne, the psaltery, the altar, the pews and the \u201cGynaikonitis\u201d had to be cleaned, the tiles scrubbed, the floor polished. Manuals, candlesticks and other brass and silverware had to be polished, this was the girls\u2019 job, they were rubbed with ashes and lemon wedges and made them shine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two or three days before the celebration, the preparation of the food began. For the fishermen was tradition, all the \u2018menula\u2019 they caught in those days were donated for the table of the Virgin Mary. The women would gather in the church\u2019s courtyard to clean and flour the fish ready for frying, each bringing her own frying pan. They fried them in the two small cells that existed at the edge of the yard, and because there was no room, they made makeshift fireplaces in the yard, others were more practical and brought their kerosene stove. One year the menula was too late to \u201cfall out\u201d and the Virgin\u2019s table was in danger of being left without the traditional fish. The Holy Mother performed her miracle, on the eve the menula \u201cfell out\u201d on the beach of Vronti. The fishermen used to cast their nets, bring the fish to the harbor and return to Vronti, until it got dark. That year the women stayed up all night cleaning, flouring and frying the fish, until the morning when the church service ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other women took charge of the chickpeas, they cleaned them the day before and put them in water to soften and on the eve they boiled separately those intended for \u201cyachni\u201d and the others to be cooked with rice. The rice was put in during the day so that it will stay fresh. They cleaned the lettuce the night before but cut it the next day to keep the salad fresh. They put it in large clay pots and added fresh chopped onions along with dill. Just before serving, added oil and vinegar. In the same dish they put fish, chickpeas and salad. In the past when there were no commercial bakeries, each family offered a fresh loaf of bread. The bread was cut into slices on the day of the feast and placed in large pans. The wine was bought from Othos and Volada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The day before the school was closed, the teachers took the children to the river of Myli to cut myrtles. Each child made a bundle, one bigger and one smaller depending on their age and strength, there was competition to see who would make the biggest bundle to get the teachers\u2019 thumbs up. The myrtles were cut into smaller pieces and thrown in the yard and on the street in front of the church. On the eve, Vespers was celebrated, and all-night supplications followed, along with the pilgrims, those who had undertaken the cooking also stayed up all night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Day of Celebration<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the day of Celebration, the Metropolitan came from Aperi to perform the liturgy and doxology for the National anniversary. From early on the main road from the Administration building to the port the students of the Primary school marched singing national songs and the sea boy scouts with trumpets and drums. Later, the high school students and their teachers came down in trucks from Aperi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the doxology, the national speech of the day was delivered, the first year after the Incorporation by colonel Konstantinos Kyriazanos military commander of Karpathos. Afterwards, the Metropolitan with the priests and authorities of the island went to the square of the Administration building, where a memorial service was held for the fallen heroes and wreaths were laid. There was a parade of high school and elementary school students, sea boy scouts and societies, and at the same time 21 dynamites were thrown from Acropolis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the Administration building, people returned to the courtyard of the church, which was laid out with tables to serve food. First sat the officials and the people from the other villages, and later the Pigadiotes. It was preceded by the serving of food and followed by the serving of wine by young maidens. If someone was sick or old and could not go to the Holy Mother\u2019s table, the church committee would send food to their home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the feast of the Virgin Mary, people gathered at the Fountain to watch the boat races. The boats started from the beach in front of the Fountain, went around Despotic Island and ended at the Fountain. People waited anxiously to see the first boat that would appear to return from the Despotic and then finish first to receive the prize, an olive or myrtle branch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Home visits<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The celebration continued in the afternoon with visits to the homes of those who had someone named Vangelia, even if she was a small child. Groups or families started from one end to the other end of Pigadia to visit the houses that were celebrating. The visit was simple and friendly, the treat established with a specific \u201critual\u201d: first the women were treated to liquor and the men to wine or raki. Next came the sweets made by the housewife\u2019s hands: Sweets of the spoon and cool water, baklava and kourabiades. If the celebrant was a child, she could not go to play with the other children, she had to be at home, accepting the wishes and giving thanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That same afternoon, instead of visiting, the young men and women went for walks, coming and going from the port to Administration building. When the young men and the young women met, they did not speak but exchanged sneak peeks full of meaning. If the weather was good, the sailor boy scouts would take the Scouting boat and make trips in the harbor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The estranged<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The estranged Pigadiotes had a special relationship with Vangelistra. In America, the \u201cPoseidon\u201d club of Pigadiotes equated its annual ball with the feast of Vagelistra, the Saturday closest to March 25, and made sure that the food they served resembled Vagelistra\u2019s table, there were fried fish and chickpeas. In 1995 \u201cPoseidon\u201d organized a pilgrimage trip to the Grace of Vangelistra, fifty Pigadiotes flew to Karpathos to meet her Grace and celebrate with their compatriots. In recent years, several American Pigadiotes go to Karpathos to attend her celebration, especially when Easter comes early and closer to the Feast of the Virgin Mary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pigadiotes and other Karpathians from all over the world responded enthusiastically to the call of our Metropolitan Mr. Ambrosius for the construction of the new Vangelistra. The American \u201cPoseidon\u201d Association published a two-volume celebratory album dedicated to Vangelistra, financed the marble iconostasis and collected 100,000 dollars from the fundraising it held. Also, from his fund and other collected among their compatriots, the hall of the church was built. At the same time, many tributes and hagiographies are the offering of estranged Pigadiotes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pigadiotes, leaving for foreign countries, passed by Vangelistra to light a candle and pray, and together with the wish of their mother, they wanted to receive the blessing of the Virgin Mary and bring them back to her Grace. When they were already inside the ship about to depart, they looked at Vangelistra, where from her yard relatives and friends said goodbye to them by waving white handkerchiefs wishing them a good journey and a good return.
