has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>From Symi to the Red Sea Searching for Pearls<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Manolis Cassotis<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since ancient times, the preoccupation of the Dodecanese and the islanders in general with the seabed has been known. Until the early 20th century, Dodecanese sailors plowed the Eastern Mediterranean, from the coasts of Syria, Lebanon and Palestine to the coasts of Tunisia, Sicily and southern Italy, fishing for sponges from the seabed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to sponges, the Dodecanese were also engaged in shell fishing. In ancient times Karpathos, Nisyros and other islands were engaged in fishing for \u00abpurple shell\u00bb and until the beginning of the 20th century Dodecanese fished corals in Sicily and Corsica. After the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, the Dodecanese reached the Southern Red Sea, the islands and coasts of Yemen and Eritrea, where \u201csentefia\u201d (pearl-bearing shells) abounded. The first known Dodecanese expedition to the Red Sea started in 1890 from Symi, as described in his diary by the sponge merchant Michalis Kantounias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Margaritaria_6-Small.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Margaritaria_6-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-47864\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u0397 \u03bd\u03cc\u03c4\u03b9\u03b1 \u0395\u03c1\u03c5\u03b8\u03c1\u03ac \u03b8\u03ac\u03bb\u03b1\u03c3\u03c3\u03b1 \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03b1 \u03bd\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03ac \u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 \u03a5\u03b5\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03b7\u03c2 \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9 \u0395\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03c1\u03ad\u03b1\u03c2. The southern Red Sea with the islands of Yemen and Eritrea.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Journey<\/em><\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The expedition, a schooner and some \u201caktarmades\u201d (sponge diving boats), started from Symi on April 17, 1890, stopped at Armathia of Kassos, and proceeded to Port Said, where they arrived on April 26. On the 28th of April they departed from Port Said and through the Canal they arrived, the next day, at Suez where they met their compatriots who lived there and gave them letters, they brought from Symi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 1 May, they took a pilot and departed Suez, sailing for Al Hudaydah, Yemen, arriving on 14 May. The next day they threw the \u201caktarmades\u201d into the sea and with a new pilot the schooner went to Marabut to get water. The \u201caktarmades\u201d headed for the island of Zugar, where the schooner met them fishing for \u201csentefia\u201d near two islets. On the 26th of May the schooner went to Mettina where they bought a heifer, some hens and some dates and from there on the 29th of May they returned to the Hanish Islands to meet the \u201caktarmades\u201d, who continued to work for another week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Slave traders<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On June 6 they left for the opposite African coast, and, with the sun setting, they reached the region of Assab, in the southern part of the Italian colony of Eritrea. But as they did not find any \u201csentefia\u201d there, they continued their journey and the next day they reached the region of Beylul. There they encountered seven ships from Jeddah, whose leaders pretended to be engaged in the trade in dates and other products, when, in reality, they were slave traders who bought slaves from the interior of East Africa and sold them in the slave markets of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. One of the slave traders confided to Kantounia, who often offered him ouzo, that a ship had recently set sail for Jeddah with 160 children, boys and girls, from 8 to 16 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Heroic and Deadly Legacy<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On June 8, they returned to the Hanish Islands. Four days later, \u201cFilimonio of Pugena\u201d was \u201chit by the machine\u201d and at dawn on the 14th to 15th he passed away. They buried Filimonio on the islet of Al-Hanish al-Saghir and left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(The adjective designation \u201cof Pugaina\u201d is not a remnant of the Matriarchy, but denoting orphanhood from a father. And the name \u201cFilimonas\u201d in the neuter gender, indicates his young age. He was definitely one of those poor and \u2013 usually \u2013 orphan children who \u201cknew,\u201d at their most vulnerable age, the cruelty of the sea, the tragedy of life, but not life itself. \u201cHit by the machine,\u201d \u201cPassed away,\u201d \u201cBuried.\u201d How much familiarity with tragedy of life, but also how much latent tenderness: \u201cthe Philemonio\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next day they returned to the African coast, Cape Ras Rahmet of the Italian colony of Eritrea, where they continued their work. On June 20, two or three sailors went ashore to buy meat and water and returned with water and two goats. The next day Kantounias went out with two sailors and they bought water and two sheep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because they did not find \u201csentefia\u201d, they left the African coast and for the second time went to Al Hudaydah. On June 30, the crew left, they went to work in Kamaran and the islets further north. On the 6th of July, the schooner left to meet the \u201caktarmades\u201d and after two days of fruitless efforts went to Kamaran. Without anchoring, they solicited information about the \u201caktarmades\u201d from passing ships. The schooner moored by a deserted beach and sent the pilot ashore to gather information about the \u201caktarmades\u201d. He returned the next day and reported that someone had seen them take water and depart for two islets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On July 11, the schooner departed for the places indicated. They met an old fisherman, fishing with his son, who treated them with sundried fish and seagull\u2019s eggs and told them that he showed the \u201caktarmades\u201d heading for another islet. But they didn\u2019t find them there either. The schooner then headed to Al Luhayyah, where finally found the \u201caktarmades\u201d after 16 days of searching. They were left without bread and other food except water which Al Luhayyah had in abundance. They stayed in Al Luhayyah for eight days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On July 22, they left for the island of Zukfas, where they arrived the same day, and went out to procure wood. On July 28 they left for Farasan and on the way moored on the island of Fiut. The schooner stayed there and, the next day, sent the \u201caktarmades\u201d to work. The sea, however, did not yield what they desired, and so, on August 6, they continued to Farasan, landed on the island of Kummeh and stayed there for several days. But they also left from there because the performance was not satisfactory. They continued working on reefs and islets, and after a few days set sail for the African coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Cholera<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the 3rd of September they arrived at Massawa but were not allowed to disembark because cholera had taken hold in Massawa as in Yemen. They left them only to procure food. On September 7, they arrived at the island of Nacura, opposite the larger island of Dahlak. In Dahlak was an Italian military detachment with an officer and some soldiers because the islands of the Dahlak Archipelago were part of Eritrea. The schooner went to Dahlak to fill her tanks with water and the \u201caktarmades\u201d left for work in Nacura and the surrounding islets. On September 13, returning to Nacura broke the schooner\u2019s front mast and her anchor hooked to the bottom of the sea. Finally, they hauled up the anchor and went to meet the \u201caktarmades\u201d, who were eager and unwilling to continue their work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On September 24 they returned to Nacura where they stayed for seven days. During this time, they sent Petros Koukoulis, in an Arab ship, to Massawa to buy provisions, and on October 1, after the persistent refusal of the sponge divers to work, they left for Massawa. But, again, for the second time, they were not allowed to disembark, because of cholera, and decided to continue to Al Hudaydah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, due to headwinds and the oysters stuck to the sides of the schooner, the schooner had been drifting for 11 days and only progressed 55 miles. In the meantime, the \u201caktarmades\u201d asked for water from the schooner, and because they had none to give them, they ran away and lost them. The schooner returned to Dahlak Kepir, to get water, hoping that there they would find the \u201caktarmades\u201d. Because they had run out of bread, they went by boat to Nacura where they met the Italian officer and through him, they wrote to Massawa and brought them 154 okades (197 kilograms) of bread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Shipwreck<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 24 October, as soon as the boat returned from Dahlak Kepir, the schooner departed for Al Hudayday. They continued sailing by the coast, traveling by day and anchored at night. After four days, the captain decided to travel at night in East Northeast direction. They traveled for two days and nights, and at sunset of the last night they passed two miles from a desert island, located several miles from the inhabited islands. On October 31, from East Northeast direction changed course to North Northwest and at 10 p.m. they were shipwrecked, fortunately, near an island. The castaways went ashore and hired a boat to take Koukoulis and other sailors to Dahlak, the captain with 11 others remained to guard the wreck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After eight days, on November 8, the day of the Archangel, patron of Symi, Koukoulis returned with a second boat that he rented in Dahlak. They loaded the two little boats with what they saved from the wreck and left for Massawa, where they arrived on November 11. After 13 days they left Massawa and on November 26 they arrived in Al Hudaydah. Kantounias stayed in Al Hudaydah for a year. We do not know what happened to castaways and \u201caktarmades\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On November 18, 1891, Kantounias left Al Hudaydah for Sana\u2019a, the capital of Yemen, where he arrived after six days of walking.
