The mass migration of the Dodecanesians to Egypt began after the end of the Greek Revolution of 1821. Rhodians and other Dodecanesians engaged in trade, especially cotton, and prospered. From Alexandria Kazoulis extended their activities to Kafr-el-Zayat (between Alexandria and Cairo). The beautiful neoclassical \u201cKazoulio Gymnasium\u201d of Rhodes is also a gift of the Kazoulians of Egypt. With the start of work on the opening of the Suez Canal, the migration of the Kasians to Egypt took on large proportions. The first association was founded by the Rhodians, followed by the Lerians (1873), the Symians, the Kastelorizians, the Kasians, the Nisyrians, the Telians (1907) and the Chalkians. Also, Karpathos, from the middle of the 19th century, was in commercial contact with Egypt, where it exported lemons and grapes. Most of the Dodecanesians lived in Alexandria, Port Said, and Ismailia, which was adjacent to the Suez Canal. From the beginning of the Italian rule in the Dodecanese, other Dodecanesians settled there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At this time, every Dodecanesian popular demonstration in Greece for the liberation of the Dodecanese caused problems from Italy, which accused Greece of inciting the Dodecanesians, thus making the work of the Dodecanesians in Greece for the liberation of their islands difficult. Athens was no longer fertile ground and the weight of the struggle fell on the shoulders of the Dodecanesians in Egypt, who had economic independence and less diplomatic commitment. They could work with great freedom of movement and efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On November 26, 1918, the Dodecanesians in Egypt founded in Alexandria the \u201cCentral Association of Dodecanese\u201d, which on September 12, 1925 began publishing the weekly newspaper \u201cDodecanese\u201d, which was the connecting link between the Dodecanesian organizations in Egypt, Greece, America, Australia and other countries. Other Dodecanesian newspapers and publications circulated in Egypt were \u201cAnatoli\u201d, \u201cDodecanese of Alexandria\u201d and \u201cDodecanese Calendar\u201d. Then, the \u201cDodecanese Youth\u201d of Egypt, Athens and America took up the struggle for the liberation of the Dodecanese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During WWII, many Dodecanesians escaped from the Italian-occupied and German-occupied Dodecanese and arrived in the Middle East. Of those who arrived in Egypt, many joined the Greek navy and took part in many operations throughout the Mediterranean, such as the landings in Sicily, Southern Italy and Southern France, the supply of Malta and the battles of Leros and Tilos. Papadopoulos, who lived in Rhodesia, served in the British army during WWII.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Sudan<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the 19th century, through Egypt, the first Dodecanesians \u2013 mainly Karpathians \u2013 went to the then Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, where they engaged in construction and other technical works as contractors and simple craftsmen. Soon, other Dodecanesians followed, who, in addition to construction and technical works, were involved in business. Most lived in Port-Sudan, Khartoum and other cities, and the Karpathians alone numbered around 1500 to 2000. In 1907 the Karpathians of Sudan founded the \u201cOmonia\u201d association. From Sudan, several Karpathians and other Dodecanesians moved to neighboring Ethiopia and engaged in construction and technical projects. Karpathian contractors using Karpathian craftsmen and laborers built the Anglican Church of St. George in Antis Abeba. In 1913, the \u039aarpathians in Ethiopia founded the Educational Karpathian Association \u201cPROGRESS\u201d. After gaining independence, the Dodecanese of Sudan returned to Greece or immigrated to America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Southern Rhodesia<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the beginning of the 20th century, John Antoniadis and Stamatis Mavros from Karpathos immigrated to Southern Rhodesia, where other Karpathians followed them. Most settled in Salisbury, Gwelo, Selukwe, Banket and Glendale and engaged in business and trade with great success, and founded the Karpathian association \u201cEpiskopi\u201d.. During WWII, several Karpathians served in the British army. Among them Vassos Papadopoulos who took part in the battles in North Africa, Sicily and Italy with General Montgomery\u2019s 8th Army and reached the rank of captain. After the country\u2019s independence, almost all Dodecanesians returned to Greece or immigrated to America, and a few moved to South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Morocco<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During WWI, several Dodecanesians worked in the French war industry. From there, after the war, some of them migrated to French colonies in Africa and Madagascar, several Karpathians migrated to Morocco where other compatriots followed them. When WWII began, several Dodecanesians who lived in Morocco volunteered for the Foreign Legion, who beside Morocco served in Algeria in Bel Abbes, Lanjeux Abojelerine and Saida. One of the Karpathian legionnaires, Thomas Economides, took part in the landing at Narvik, Norway on May 5, 1940, and after the failure of the operation he returned to England. After the subjugation of France to Germany, the French colonies of North Africa and the legionnaires stationed there came under the jurisdiction of the Vichy government. When Morocco gained its independence, most Dodecanesians returned to their islands, some moved to France and others immigrated to America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the interwar period (between WWI and WWII), several Dodecanesians migrated to other European colonies in Africa, who in addition to business engaged in the cultivation of large agricultural lands. The Symians who went to the Belgian Congo engaged in fishing in the Congo River, and those who stayed in Kesega built the chapel of Panormite. The Kasians starting from Egypt settled in the Portuguese colonies in East Africa, mainly in the city of Beira in Mozambique. When these countries gained their independence, most of the Dodecanesians returned to Greece, while others immigrated to America and a few to South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Dodecanesians Jews in Africa<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to Greek, and Jewish origin Dodecanesians migrated to Africa. Their migration started gradually from the end of the 19th century and continued in the first four decades of the 20<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century and intensified after the rise of fascism in Italy and Mussolini\u2019s collaboration with Hitler. The main destinations of the Jews were the Belgian Congo and the British colonies of Southern Rhodesia and South Africa. From there they spread to other colonies and countries in Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The journey started from Rhodes by ship to Alexandria and through the Suez Canal they entered the Red Sea, reached Beira in Mozambique, and from there they went west into the interior of Africa. Another journey started from Rhodes to Genoa and from there to Gibraltar and along the West African coast reached the Belgian Congo, many continued to Cape Town in South Afrika.
