Dodecanese in Canada<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until 1921, when immigration to the United States was free, there was no reason for the Dodecanese to immigrate to Canada because of its cold climate. But when the immigration law of the United States \u201cclosed\u201d the road to immigrants coming from southern and eastern Europe, interest for Canada grew. The large immigration stream to Canada began after the war and continued until 1965, when the new American immigration law became more favorable to Greek immigrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first Dodecanese in Canada<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first known Dodecanese who came to Canada was Manolis Zannis from Nisyros. From Constantinople he went to Montreal around 1901, and a few years later he brought his brothers Miltiades, Vassilis and Nicholas, and his cousin George Georgoulis. Georgoulis got a job at National Steel and was soon promoted to foreman. From this position he brought to Montreal 29 Nisyrians and in 1920 and later another 11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the other Dodecanese who came to Canada before the war was the teacher Emmanuel Papasymeon from Monolithos of Rhodes, who arrived at St. John of New Brunswick in 1912. Minas J. Melissinos, from Karpathos, arrived in Montreal in 1916, and in 1926 the Kasians Nicholas Bonapartis, Elias Batis and Nikolaos Mavroudis, and later the Karpathians Anthony Fourtounas and Michalis Protopapas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The big current<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1951, with the ocean liner \u201cNea Hellas\u201d, more than ten Dodecanese arrived in Halifax and from there they went to Montreal to find work. They didn\u2019t know anyone to help them and had to take jobs on the railways. They worked for two years in Montreal and from there were taken to North-Western Ontario, in the town of Nakina, north of Thunder Bay. The working conditions were unbearable: they lived and slept in train cars, where stoves and blankets failed to warm them in winter, when the temperature dropped to 45 degrees below zero. Whenever was damage, they were moved to repair the railway tracks. They traveled at night, when they slept, so that the company would not lose a day\u2019s work. With no other choice, they endured the torture and survived. After two-three years, many returned to Montreal, where were prospects for a better future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toronto<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Few others went to Toronto and other cities in Ontario. Haris Pissaris, from Kos, went to Toronto, first worked as a cook, and then opened a restaurant. The same route was followed by Manolis Helios, Eleftherios Chatzioannou and Vassilis Alachiotis who opened the \u201cKos Restaurant\u201d. In a similar way, hundreds of Dodecanese, from workers, evolved into entrepreneurs, not only in restaurants but also in other businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

London<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1954 Tasos Diavolitsis with his wife Maria and their son Stavros from Antimachia, Kos immigrated to Canada and settled in London, Ontario. In the next three years, he brought Maria\u2019s parents Thomas and Dionysia and her brothers Nikos, Manos, Elias and John, and other relatives. Several of them returned to Kos, got married and returned with their spouses. The same process continued for several years. One brought his relatives who, after two or three years, would return to Antimachia, marry, and return with their spouses. They, again, brought their own relatives and, thus, the community grew. Besides the Koans from Antimachia, other Dodecanese from Nisyros, Kalymnos and other islands settled in London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Windsor<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of 1948, Konstantinos Koutsonikolas came to Canada from Apollona of Rhodes and settled in Windsor, Ontario and then brought his brother Panagiotis and other relatives. Other relatives followed and by the end of the 1960s, the Apollonians in Windsor numbered 200, mostly young people. In addition to the Apollonians, other Rhodians from Kalythies and Lardo settled in Windsor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Besides Montreal, Toronto, London and Windsor, the Dodecanese settled and in other cities. At the end of the 1940s, George Hatzidiakos immigrated to Canada from Apollona of Rhodes and settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he brought his brother Panagiotis and other relatives. Other Dodecanese went to Manitoba to work in sawmills, factories and mines, others to Alberta. In Western Canada, in the city of Victoria and on Vancouver Island in British Columbia on the Pacific went other Dodecanese, mainly sailors, who disembarked and stayed there. One of them was Yiannis Bournis from Patmos, who arrived in Vancouver in 1953.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Migration Continues<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the first immigrants acquired Canadian citizenship, they brought their relatives and friends. Hatzi-Vasilis Hatzigeorgiou from Menetes in Karpathos brought his siblings and other relatives and friends, around 30. They in turn brought their relatives and in this way the Dodecanese community of Canada grew. At the beginning of the 1950s, most of the immigrants who settled in Montreal lived mainly on St. Laurent avenue. Later they moved further north, opened restaurants and Greek grocery stores. Over time, several moved further away from Montreal, to Shomedey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something similar happened in Toronto, many Dodecanese moved to the suburbs such as Scarborough and Georgetown and neighboring towns. The same in Windsor, who moved to the suburbs, and some to the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The situation in Montreal began to change in the 1970s, when Francophones in Quebec wanted independence from Canada and forced immigrant children to be taught French instead of English, which was their preference. Some Dodecanese moved to Toronto, Windsor and other English-speaking states, several immigrated to the United States, and many returned to Greece, where they invested their savings in real estate and business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Associations and their activities<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In October 1951, on the initiative of the Kalymnian sponge merchant Socrates Tsikouris, the first Dodecanese association was founded in Montreal, which later reorganized and united with the Rhodian association under the name \u201cDodecanese Association of Canada\u201d, \u201cColossus\u201d and from 1976 the publication of the newspaper \u201cDodecanese News\u201d began. One of the main activities of the Association is the annual celebration of the Dodecanese Integration with Greece, with the annual dance. The Association participates in the National parade and all national holidays and organizes cultural events, which aim to preserve the cultural tradition of our islands. In addition to \u201cDodecanese News\u201d, the Association published the magazine \u201cBrachera\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local Associations<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From time to time, several local associations were founded in Montreal: the Rhodian Association \u201cColossus\u201d, the \u201cKalymnian Brotherhood\u201d, the Symian Brotherhood \u201cPanormites\u201d, the Koan Society \u201cHippocrates\u201d, and the \u201cHoly Rock\u201d of the Menediatians of Karpathos, who established women\u2019s and youth chapters. Also, on the initiative of Protopresbyter Konstantinos Chalkias, the \u201cBrotherhood of Karpathians \u2013 Kasians of Canada\u201d was founded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Windsor<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1968 a Rhodian association was founded in Windsor by Apollonians, and in 1983 with the participation of other Rhodians from Kalythies and Lardo it took a Pan-Rhodian form under the name: \u201cRodian Association Windsor-Detroit\u201d, \u201cColossus\u201d. The Association\u2019s activities and events include the annual celebration of the Integration of the Dodecanese with Greece, with church service, doxology and a dance with an orchestra coming from Rhodes. The Association has dance group and football team, and the teacher Angeliki Halkitis teaches the Greek language, trying to pass on Greek values to the new generation and stimulate their love for Greece and the Dodecanese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Toronto<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1976, the \u201cHippocrates\u201d Pan-Koan Association was founded in Toronto and in 1999 in London. Also in Toronto, in 2000, the Nisyrian association \u201cPanagia Spiliani\u201d was founded. And from 1960-2000, there was an active Rhodian association. These associations have dance groups and, apart from the celebration of the Incorporation of the Dodecanese with Greece, they organize Christmas and New Year celebrations, dances, excursions, and participate in diaspora conferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Church<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alongside the associations\u2019 activities, the Dodecanese of Canada showed great interest in the Greek Orthodox churches. From 1960 to 1963, Bishop Athenagoras Kokkinakis, from Patmos, served in the then Greek Orthodox Diocese of Canada. Particularly \u201ctied\u201d to the Dodecanese community of Canada is the Holy Trinity church in Montreal, in which the archpriest Konstantinos Chalkias from Karpathos served for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Politics<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, the Dodecanese of Canada also showed interest in politics. John Kannis, of Kalymnian origin, was elected federal member of Ontario from 1993-2011.
