celebration in Karpathos<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>By Manolis Cassotis<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the biggest holidays of Christianity, regardless of religious denomination, is Good Friday. Mourning prevails everywhere, it doesn\u2019t matter where in the world you are and whether you are young or old. To the depths of your soul, you feel: \u201cToday the sky is black, today is a black day\u2026\u201d. Even the children felt the sadness that prevails on this day, and when they ate the lentil without oil and with vinegar, they felt their support for the crucified God-Man who instead of water watered him with vinegar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have these feelings more when these Holy days you are in a village or small island, like in Karpathos. Good Friday dawned under the mournful sounds of the church bell. Mourning in the churches, mourning in the hearts of the faithful for the unjust crucifixion of Christ. (photo a200-GoodFriday5 is from 1965).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Adornment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ritual of Good Friday began with the decoration of the epitaph. One by one the women came to the yard of Vagelistra, behind the church, to decorate the epitaph. Each one brought a few flowers from her flower garden, even the little girls came with a bunch of violets, daisies, or the white-yellow lilies they called tears collected from the fields. The teachers took other girls to the city flower garden to cut flowers for the epitaph. When Easter came early and not enough flowers had bloomed, the women cut what flowers from their flowerpots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was a hierarchy in the decoration of the epitaph: the younger ones bunched the flowers and gave them to the older ones who were more experienced to place them in the appropriate place on the epitaph. The girls also helped: the older ones also made bunches, and the younger ones watched with interest because one day their turn would come. If someone had recently died, their relatives wrote obituaries and affixed them to the epitaph. People were passing by, reading them, and getting emotional. Sometimes, together with the obituaries, they included the photo of the deceased. As soon as the decoration was finished, the epitaph, without the obituaries and the photos, was brought into the church for the pieta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Honor guard<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the pieta came the turn of the sea boyscouts who formed the honor guard of the epitaph. Four sea boyscouts, one at each corner of the epitaph, stood guard. That they had a sense of the seriousness and sanctity of the moments, was seen by the way they \u201cguarded\u201d: they stood perfectly still, speechless and serious, with their poles underarms, for a whole hour, until they came to replace them. Father\u2019s was the biger and then the mother\u2019s, the children\u2019s were smaller according to their age. The schoolchildren were eagerly waiting for the eulogies to begin. The teachers had divided them into three choirs and rehearsed for a month. The big day has finally arrived. Along with the children, several young women sang from gyneconitis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Circumference<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A large part of the ritual of Good Friday is the circumambulation of the epitaph, which in different parts of Greece and in the Greek parishes abroad takes a different form depending on the prevailing environment. The circumambulation of the epitaph was quite widespread in Symi, since long ago the 14 parish churches of the island performed the circumambulation of the epitaph on the night of Good Friday. At the end of the tour, the epitaph of the churches that were located in the upper part of the city gathered in the square of Aleminas. On another island the path of the epitaph procession passed through the shallow waters of a beach. In America, the police close the streets around the church for epitaph\u2019s procession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Karpathos the epitaph\u2019s circumambulation started from Pigadia, in the other villages the narrow alleys around the churches did not allow it. Shortly after the eulogies, the procession of the epitaph began, the climax of the Good Friday celebration. The procession started from the church following the main road to the west. The epitaph was preceded, held by four men, with the priest, the singers, the church commissioners with the officials and followed by the congregation. The sea boyscouts once again formed the honor guard of the epitaph. To decorate the Epitaph, the flowers are selected and made into bunches by Zoe Spanomanoli (front) and Irini Hazifotis.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At some points the procession stopped, and a memorial service was held with the first stop in the small square at the intersection of the main road with the one that goes to the Administration building. The next stop was at the square of the Administration building and then at the intersection of the road that goes to Aperi, near Nikita Zavola\u2019s house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the upper central road, the procession passed and stopped in Konaki and from there it continued with another stop in Ryaki, near the house of Sophia Nicholas Lambros, where the road goes to Sisamo. From the inner street the procession continued and reached the cemetery. The memorial service that followed was the most moving part of the procession. From the cemetery the procession descended and stopped at the harbor and the Fountain before returning to Vangelistra. Four men held the epitaph high over the central gate, for the faithful to pass under one by one, to enter the church and for the priest to finish the service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Immediately after the dismissal, the congregation approached the epitaph to take the flowers that they placed in the iconostasis they had at home which, after drying, they used for incense. As soon as the epitaph entered the church, the boyscouts, holding their poles horizontally, made a line around the epitaph so that each one took the flowers in turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>New Era<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Little has changed since then. If someone wants to remember Pigadia of their childhood, Easter is the most suitable time to visit Karpathos, to watch the Good Friday service and the procession of the epitaph. Today, the celebration of Good Friday takes place in the church of the Holy Apostles under the patronage of the Metropolitan. The decoration of the epitaph is done in the courtyard of the Holy Apostles by the daughters and granddaughters of the women who decorated it half a century ago. Epitaph flowers do not come from the gardens and lawns of every housewife, but from florists. The sea Boyscouts are absent from the epitaph, as well as from all the other events. Good Friday. \u201cToday He is hanged on the cross \u2026\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The procession of the epitaph starts from Holy Apostles church, follows the old route from the upper road and reaches the cemetery where the customary memorial service is held. There are more people, when the epitaph reaches Konaki, the queue of the procession is still at Holy Apostles. All along the route, the tenants, from the balconies, spray the epitaph and the pilgrims with rosary. From the cemetery the procession goes down to the harbor, passes the Fountain and stops in front of Vangelistra. From there it goes to the Administration building square, to the health center and ends at Holy Apostles church.
