class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Dodecanese teachers in difficult years \u2013 Aristotle Stavrakis<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>By Manolis Cassotis<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the liberation of the Dodecanese, one of the biggest problems the Dodecanese had to face was education, because with the rise of Fascism in Italy in 1922, and the concession of the Dodecanese from Turkey to Italy, based on the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923, the attempt to de-Hellenize the Dodecanese began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the beginning the Italians imposed the compulsory teaching of the Italian language, and from 1937, when the Fascist tetrarch Cesare De Vecchi took over the administration of the Dodecanese, the teaching of the Greek language was abolished, and the Italian language was imposed. Thus, the children who attended the Italian school had to cover up to eight years of Greek instruction. A titanic project that enlightened and altruistic Dodecanese teachers undertook to carry out with energy and self-confidence. Among them, high school teacher Aristotle Stavrakis has a prime position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thus, in 1986, when the \u201cPan-Karpathian Foundation\u201d, with the cooperation of the other Karpathian associations, established the \u201cKarpathian Scholarships\u201d program, it was decided to dedicate the first year of the awarding of scholarships to the memory of high school teacher Aristotle Stavrakis. At this event, the chairman of the Scholarship Committee, Manolis Cassotis, referred to the tireless and patriotic work of Aristotle Stavrakis with the following speech published in the magazine \u201cKarpathos\u201d in November 1986.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Dedication to Aristotle Stavrakis<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToday\u2019s event has special significance this year because we are honoring our studying youth, and at the same time the memory of an educator who, in the course of his life, left his stamp on our island, educating an entire generation of Karpathians.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI consider myself lucky, like several others who are in this room, in the difficult years that the Dodecanese islands went through after the end of the war, that we were lucky to have Karpathos High School run by an enlightened person, a born teacher, the late Aristotle Stavrakis, son of Papa-Nicolas Stavrakis\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe late Aristotle was born in Othos in 1902, where he learned his first letters, and continue his high school studies at the Venetocleo High School of Rhodes, from where he received his high school diploma with honors in 1919.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the same year, he enrolled in the Philosophical School of the University of Athens, from where he received his diploma in philology, also with honors. During his studies, to meet the expenses, he practiced the teaching profession in Piraeus. After completing his studies, he was appointed and served at the Mytilene High School until the end of the war.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs soon as Karpathos was liberated, he returned to our island and was entrusted with the organization of Karpathos High School. Because there are no high school teachers on our island, the late Stavrakis, at his own expense, goes to Rhodes and other islands and convinces his well-known colleagues to come to Karpathos. Thus, in 1946, for the first time, Karpathos High School was operating with three classes and with the late Aristotle Stavrakis as high school principal. In the next three years, a class was added every year, so that in 1949 the Gymnasium became a full six-class school\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe work he has to accomplish and the obstacles he has to overcome are enormous. In 1948, when I first went to High School, the late Stavrakis has three teachers to teach five classes. Although he is busy with the administration of the Gymnasium, he teaches all day long, just like all the other teachers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn 1949, at the request of the then Administrator of the Dodecanese, Nicholas Mavris, Aristotle Stavrakis moved to Kasos to organize the Kasos High School. The following year he returned to Karpathos High School and served until 1964.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHis teaching had the dynamism of his personality but also the simplicity of his character. When he taught ancient Greek, he brought you mentally to Athens of Plato and Sophocles. When he was teaching Modern Greek, your thoughts flew to the island of Papadiamantis and when he was teaching Modern History, then you lived with Kanaris and Kolokotronis\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn many cases he used ancient Greek. I remember when he announced in the following way that the boys should cut their hair (in free translation): \u2018And the long hair Achaeans should dry their hair&#8217;\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe was not only an excellent teacher, but also as a High School Principal he demonstrated excellent administrative skills. He imposed discipline and order on the Gymnasium and made it a remarkable Center of learning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cApart from education, the late Stavrakis also demonstrated rich social activity. Among others, for many years, he was an excellent cantor in Othos, especially his chanting during Holy Week gave Byzantine grandeur and mysticism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn 1964, after his retirement, he was elected President of the Othos Community, which he served with devotion. In 1968 he moved to Piraeus to be near his children who are attending University studies. He left his spirit there in 1979, but his memory and work will be perpetuated for the next Karpathian generations\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Karpathian Associations of America, honoring him, dedicate our event today to him and award the scholarships in his memory.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMemorable Aristotle Stavrakis!
