But, as far as we know, apart from the Greek Revolution of 1821, there is no other ethnicity in America that celebrates its own Independence with such grandeur, and to be accepted, like Greek, by the wider American public. Perhaps because it is taught in universities and reflected in the architecture of public buildings, that the American civilization is considered as continuation of the Greek classical civilization. In the United States there are 263 cities and towns with Greek names. It is the interests of the cultural heritage left to us by our ancient ancestors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Philhellenic Americans<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the Philhellenic Americans is Colonel Nathaniel Rochester, of Rochester NY, who raised a respectable amount of money to aid the Greek Revolution, and on March 22, 1822, the state of New York annexed part of Northampton County and established a new town that called Greece. Today all four High Schools of Greece bear Greek names: Athena, Arcadia, Olympia and Odyssey, and in 1997 Greece NY, which has a population of 100,000 inhabitants, was twinned with Rhodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/a122b-GreekRevolution5-Small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/a122b-GreekRevolution5-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52386\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u0388\u03bd\u03b1\u03c2 \u03b1\u03c0\u03cc \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2 \u03c0\u03b9\u03bf \u03ba\u03b5\u03bd\u03c4\u03c1\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c2 \u03b4\u03c1\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2 \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 Rochester \u03bf\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03ac\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03ba\u03b5 \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c2 \u03c4\u03b9\u03bc\u03ae \u03c4\u03c9\u03bd \u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u03ac\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd \u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 \u00ab\u03a3\u03c6\u03b1\u03b3\u03ae\u03c2 \u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 \u03a7\u03af\u03bf\u03c5\u00bb. One of Rochester\u2019s most central streets was named in honor of the victims of the \u201cChios Massacre.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Another American Philhellenic, Jonathan Peckham Miller, served in the Greek revolutionary army as colonel, and in Livadia adopted a child born on September 15, 1824 whom he named Louka-Miltiadis. Later, in 1828, Miller and his adopted son returned to America and settled in Montpelier, Vt. Then, in 1891, the adopted Lucas Miltiades Miller was elected a federal congressman, and is the first Greek American to hold notable political office in America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Celebration<\/em><\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to an article by Kostas Hatzidimitriou published on March 20, 1993 in \u201cThe Greek American\u201d, the Greek Revolution of 1821 was celebrated for the first time in America in 1893, when the Greek flag was raised at New York City Hall. In 1921, in a small town in America, Campbell OH, we see a local organization, the Symian Association \u201cPanormitis\u201d, founded in 1916, celebrating with the cooperation of the other Dodecanese and Greek Americans the 100<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;anniversary of the Greek Revolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1959, coming to America, I found that the annual grand celebration of the Greek Revolution on 5th Avenue, the most central avenue in New York City next to Central Park, had already been established. The parade was led by prominent American and Greek politicians, who came from Greece, and members of the Greek Orthodox churches and organizations participated with floats and traditional costumes. Then, several years ago, evzones were added coming from Greece. Also, every year, the Greek Orthodox Archbishop of America is invited to the \u201cWhite House\u201d where he receives the congratulations of the American President for the Greek Palingenesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/a122b-GreekRevolution7-Small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/a122b-GreekRevolution7-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52388\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u03a4\u03bf \u0394\u03c9\u03b4\u03b5\u03ba\u03b1\u03bd\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03cc, \u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03be\u03cd \u03b4\u03b5\u03ba\u03ac\u03b4\u03c9\u03bd \u03ac\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9\u03bd \u03b1\u03c1\u03bc\u03ac\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd. The Dodecanesian, among dozens other floats.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u03a4he Book<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The topic that we touched upon, is covered extensively with several other and very interesting topics, the newly published book \u201cThe Revolution of 1821 and the Greeks in America\u201d, translated by George Aposkitis, edited and introduced by Maria Kaliambou, professor at Yale University.
