Cassotis<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the beginning of the 20th century when immigrants from Greece and countries of Southern and Eastern Europe began to arrive, the locals did not see them with a good eye. They only considered them fit to work in the coal mines. When some Greeks started to create the first restaurants they caused the hostility of the locals, as can be seen from the inscription at the entrance of a restaurant: \u201cClean American restaurant, without mice and Greeks\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1912 Manolis Giannakis opened the first Karpathian restaurant in Charleston WV, and to cope with the difficulties he encountered he worked sixteen hours every day. Similar efforts were followed by other Karpathians, who in three years (1917-1920) created at least ten restaurants located near towns where were coal mines. Later (1922-1940) other Karpathian restaurants were also created in urban centers, such as in Pittsburgh, New York, Baltimore and Chicago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Diners<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Diner is a type of restaurant that is built in a factory, and assembled in the place where it will operate, usually near a busy highway. The first Diner, built in 1872, was a horse drawn wagon. In the 1930s the industry produced elaborate stainless-steel Diners and in the 1960s and 1970s they took on the Colonial and Mediterranean style. Today Diners have evolved into luxury restaurants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/a122a-Diners8-Small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/a122a-Diners8-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52191\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u03a4\u03bf Nick\u2019s Seafood Pavilion \u03c3\u03c4\u03bf Yorktown VA. Nick\u2019s Seafood Pavilion in Yorktown VA.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Horseshoe Diner, the first Karpathian Diner, was opened by Nikos Kapetanakis and Yiannis Gergatsoulis in 1938 in Jersey City and two years later, Michalis Sarris and Dimitris Cavalieros opened the \u201c400 Diner\u201d in Elizabeth. Several Karpathians passed through them, who, from dishwashers, became cooks and later, with their savings, opened their own Diners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>New Jersey<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 1950s, the movement of middle-class people from the cities to the suburbs began, and many of those who left New York settled in New Jersey. In a few years, villages developed into towns, resulting in an increase in the demand for restaurants where the Karpathians happen to be in the right places at the right time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It didn\u2019t take long for the Karpathians to see the opportunities that New Jersey presented. The first foray was made in 1951 by the brothers Manolis and Vasos Mavroleon and Mina Lenti, who bought the Freehold Diner in Freehold and a little later the same partners with Nikos Kapetanakis bought the Turnabout Diner in Phillipsburg. In 1956, Manolis and Vassos Mavroleon, Minas Lentis and Aristotelis Papageorgiou opened the Monmouth Queen Diner, in Eatontown. That same year, brothers Anastasis, Nikitas, George and Nick Alexiadis opened the Garden State Diner in Paramus, and Kostis Nikolaou, Michalis Vassilakis, Dimitris Nikolaidis and Theoharis Manoliadis opened the Golden Star Diner in Little Falls, and the following year the Nickolas Mich. Stavrakis, Kostis Nik. Zavolas, Vassos G. Makris, Manolis El. Chalkias and Yannis G. Sarris the Venus Diner in Union. By 1963 ten more Karpathian Diners were opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Acne period<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 1965, the number of Karpathian Diners has been increasing significantly. The new immigration law allowed two thousand Karpathians to settle in America. The newcomers got jobs in Karpathian Diners, as dishwashers and later as cooks. For a few years they worked hard, until they saved the capital needed to open their own Diner, usually four relatives or friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/a122a-Diners7-Small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/a122a-Diners7-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52190\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u03a4\u03bf John\u2019s Restaurant \u03c3\u03c4\u03bf Bartow FL. John\u2019s Restaurant in Bartow FL.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Hard job<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the day the Diner opened, hard work began. The four partners worked 7 days a week and 16 hours a day: two worked days and two nights, one in the kitchen and the other in the reception. A 150-seat Diner grossed around $10,000 a week, of which 40% was allocated for food purchases, 30% for wages, and 13-15% rent for the lot, insurance, electricity, water, telephone and other expenses. The net profit was from 15-17%, from which they had to repay the loans. After five years of hard work, they could \u201cbreathe\u201d, enjoy the fruits of their labor and live humanly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By 1990 New Jersey\u2019s Karpathian Diners had reached 100. Karpathians had dominated this type of restaurant, so when one stopped into a New Jersey Diner, they did not ask if it was Greek but if it was Karpathian. In a New York Times article about New Jersey Diners, three of the six mentioned were Karpathians. Little by little, New Jersey politicians also began to appreciate the economic and political power of the Karpathians and to look to their support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, on the initiative of George Manolios, John Karakatsanis, John Sakellaris, Michael Stamataros and other Karpathians, Pangregorian was founded, a cooperative organization of 200 expatriate restaurants and diners, which utilized their purchasing power, so that restaurateurs could obtain better prices in buying food, accessories and services. Over time, Pangregorian spread to other states in America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most Karpathian Diners were created by first-generation immigrants, who operated them until they retired and then sold or passed them on to relatives. But there were others who opened two or three Diners and often bought the lot on which the Diner was located. A typical example is Peter Felix who in 21 years (1963-1984) opened nine Diners in New Jersey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/a122a-Diners3-Small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/a122a-Diners3-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52188\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u03a4\u03bf Monmouth Queen Diner \u03c3\u03c4\u03bf Eatontown NJ. Today most children of Diners owners prefer letters and sciences or pursue careers in other types of business. So, the owners, when the time comes to retire, sell them to other Greeks or even to foreigners. New Jersey\u2019s Karpathian Diners are becoming a history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Connecticut<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 1950s, a similar movement was observed in Connecticut. In May 1950, Michael N. Chalkias, John Filippidis and the brothers George, Elias and Manolis K. Makris engaged in the restaurant business. They were followed by other Karpathians, who created the small Karpathian community in New Britain and in the 1950s opened four Diners. The Karpathians who later arrived in Connecticut indulged in another type of restaurant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Florida<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John Em. Pittas, from Arkasa, moved in 1925 to Bartow FL, where George Katros and Michael Georgiadis had opened a restaurant. The following year, Pittas opened John\u2019s Restaurant, which for many years was recognized as the best in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1958, his nephew Manolis Houvardas came to Bartow, who eventually bought John\u2019s Restaurant. Houvardas brought to America, first his brothers and then other relatives, who, in turn, brought their own relatives and in a few years the Arkasian community of Central Florida was created. At first the newcomers got jobs at John\u2019s Restaurant and in time they spread to the surrounding area where they opened their own restaurants, numbering up to 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Yorktown<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside the US National Gallery in Washington DC is a painting depicting US President George Washington and the French General Marquis de Lafayette shaking hands on a hill in Yorktown VA. Over time, and thanks to the delicious food and excellent service, the restaurant grew to become the world-famous Nick\u2019s Seafood Pavilion, with 450 seats. American presidents, senators, generals and celebrities from most American states and other countries of the world have passed through it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over time and the restaurant\u2019s leaps and bounds, Matthew was able to purchase large tracts of land in the area, including the historic Yorktown battlefield. Later, when this property was worth millions of dollars, the grateful Karpathian donated it to the state of Virginia. There, in 1976, when America was celebrating 200 years of its Independence, the American Revolution Museum of Yorktown VA, one of the most remarkable museums in America, was built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Karpathian restaurants gave a great economic boost to the Karpathian community. Karpathos also benefited from their economic prosperity: millions of dollars (income of the Karpathian restaurants), were invested in Karpathos, Attica and Rhodes, in businesses, houses and other properties.
