Italy was tired trying to get out of the war, while the belligerents were preparing to adapt to the new reality and take advantage of the expected developments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On September 8, 1943, as soon as Italy\u2019s armistice with the Allies was announced, the Germans imposed on the Italians in Rhodes, while two days earlier they had landed in Karpathos. The Allies with the cooperation of the Italians occupied Kos and Leros, but in October 1943, the Germans returned and occupied Kos, and a month later, after a fierce battle, they captured Leros. Thus, three months after the Armistice, the Dodecanese came under German occupation, except for Kastelorizo, which had been occupied by the Allies, who continued to harass the Germans with spy detachments from the Asia Minor coast and raids with the \u201cHoly Squadron\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In September 1944 the Allies occupied Symi where the \u201cHoly Squadron\u201d and the 281st Indian Brigade were stationed and launched isolated attacks against the Germans. In March 1945 they liberated Tilos and Nisyros. On May 7, 1945, General Alfred Jodl, head of the German Forces, signed with the Allies the unconditional surrender of the Germans, and among other things ordered General Otto Wagener to hand over the Dodecanese to the Allies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After consultation with the Allied headquarters in Symi, Wagener came on a German ship opposite cape Alepo, where he was picked up by an Allied destroyer and transported to Symi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arriving at the port, he was greeted by Lt. Col. Acland and led him to the house of Kapsopoulos, where the Allied Headquarters was located. The Archbishop of Damascene performs a memorial service on the battleship \u201cAverof\u201d, in memory of the fallen Dodecanesians (May 15, 1945).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When Brigadier Moffat asked Wagener if he agreed to sign the unconditional surrender of the Germans in the Dodecanese, Wagener replied: \u201cI am carrying out an order, if I had the right I would not sign.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wagener then signed and took out his revolver and handed it to Moffat, who gave it to Tsigande saying: \u201cThis trophy belongs to the \u2018Holy Squadron&#8217;\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the facade of the building where the surrender of the Dodecanese was signed by the Germans, a sign was placed by the Allies referring to the historical event. And on May 15, 1945, the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, Viceroy Damascenos, arrived in Rhodes with the battleship \u201cAverof\u201d.
