they could only find work in the coal mines. Six days a week, 12 hours a day in a dangerous and unhealthy environment, as Nikos Konstantinidis describes it (in free translation):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo leave your shores, the fresh air,<br>to enter the coal mine, while outside the sun shines\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next ones, for better, got jobs in the steel mills where the conditions were somewhat better. They also worked six days a week and 12 hours a day, in unbearable heat from the red-hot irons, as Nikos Konstantinidis describes again (in free translation):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOthers in the factories, with the high chimney,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>they cooked their little body, like cod.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others subsequently got jobs in restaurants cleaning dishes, where was more security with lower wages. But they had the opportunity to become cooks and one day to own their own restaurant. With the following couplet, Nikos Konstantinidis refers to the dishwashers (in free translation):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn Karpathos I had good time rejoicing in youth,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and now in America, I am an \u201cengineer\u201d in cleaning dishes\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The difficulties and sufferings experienced by the first immigrants did not manage to reduce some of them their interest in letters. Among them, Yiannis Kokkinidis, studied engineering at Columbia University and was the one who later designed the Bronx Express Way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interest and dreams for letters are also growing among the children and grandchildren of former miners. Among them, Nick Dalianis, studied chemistry first at the University of Chicago and later at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and contributed to the conversion of Uranium into Plutonium and the construction of the atomic bomb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interest in letters among the grandchildren of the first immigrants and those who came from Greece for higher studies is increasing. The immigration law of 1965, which gave the opportunity to 100,000 Greeks to immigrate to America, is an important \u201cblood donation\u201d to Hellenism in America and to the education of Greek Americans. Now, immigrants come with their wives and children who attend public schools and pursue higher studies at universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1974, Peter Em. Manolios came to America at the age of six with his parents and siblings. He first attended public school and then earned his doctorate at the University of Texas at Austin, where he majored in Computer Science and earned his PhD. He then taught at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta (2001-2007) and at Northeastern University in Boston as a full professor (2007-present).
