The first parliamentary elections in the Dodecanese<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the parliamentary elections of May 21 approach, the Dodecanesians\u2019 memory goes 73 years ago to the parliamentary elections of March 5, 1950, when the Dodecanese, after their integration with Greece, took part in the electoral process for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Contrary to what was happening in the rest of Greece, where the pre-election campaign was influenced by the events of the civil war that had just ended, for the Dodecanese their participation in the Greek elections was the realization of long-standing desire and struggles. Their party preferences were related to the contributions and struggles paid to gain their Freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of all the Greek politicians, Eleutherius Venizelos showed the greatest interest in the Dodecanese, and in him the Dodecanese had placed their hopes to obtain their freedom. Even during the period of Italian rule, many Dodecanesians had hung frames in the living rooms of their homes with the photo of the Ethnarch, as they called Venizelos. Also, the Asia Minor disaster, which had disastrous results for the Dodecanese who lived in Asia Minor and had properties there, the Dodecanese attributed to the Anti-Venizelian faction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even before the Dodecanese were integrated with Greece, the Dodecanese who lived mainly in Attica showed their preference for the Venizelic faction. In the 1946 elections, two Dodecanese were elected MPs with the Liberal party, George Mavros from Kastellorizo in Athens, who also served as minister, and Pericles Chrysocheris from Karpathos in Piraeus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The preference of the Dodecanese voters in the elections of March 5, 1950 towards the Venizelian faction, can be seen from the election results. The parties are ranked from extreme left to extreme right with the number and percentage of votes each received:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Democratic Party (DP) 517 (2.21%), EPEK (N.\u2008Plastiras) 3,724 (15.94%), G. Papandreou Party 2,461 (10.53%), Liberal Party (S. Venizelos) 7,652 (32, 75%), APED (N. Mavris) 2,496 (10.68%), Individuals 164 (0.70%), National party (N. Zervas) 210 (0.90%), Popular party (K. Tsaldaris) 4,065 (17.4%), Neew Party (Sp.\u2008Markesinis) 1,007 (4.31%), Political Independent Faction (PIF) 1,069 (4.58%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In conclusion, the Venizelic faction (S. Venizelos, N. Plastiras, G. Papandreou) received 59.22%, the right faction (N. Zervas, K. Tsaldaris, Sp. Markezinis) 22.61%, Independents (Nick.\u2008Mavri) and individual 11.38%, Far Left (DP) 2.21% and Far Right (PIF) 4.58%. The Dodecanese prefer the democratic center, between center-left and center-right, and avoid the extremes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Especially in Karpathos, more than 80% of the votes were won by the Liberal party and EPEK. Among the other parties, APED took the largest percentage, in recognition of the struggles and services offered by Nicholas Mavris in America for the liberation and integration of the Dodecanese with Greece. The People\u2019s party received only two votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With great interest young and old wanted to know the election results, not only for Karpathos but for the whole country. The few coffeehouses that had radios were closed on the day and night of the elections. Some friends had gathered in the kitchen of Lazarus Kosmas\u2019 cafe in Pigadia to hear the results. Lazarus opened the kitchen window towards the sea where he had placed the radio so that those who had gathered on the pier below the window could listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In these elections, the Dodecanese sent four MPs to the Hellenic Parliament, from the Liberal party Stelios Kotiadis and John Zidgis from Rhodes, from EPEK George Hadjistavris from Kalymnos, and from the People\u2019s party George Ioannidis from Kos.
