Dodecanese Jews in America<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Old Testament, Rhodes was known to the Jews since ancient times. As the Bible states (Genesis 10:4-5), one of Noah\u2019s sons was Japheth, who had seven sons including Javan (Greek). Javan also had four sons, including Rodanites (Rhodian). The presence of Jews in Rhodes is felt during the Hellenistic period and the Roman Empire. Later, the historian Theophrastus mentions that in 653 A.D. the Arabs cut down the Colossus of Rhodes and sold its metal to Jews. The Spanish traveler Rabbi Benjamin of Tuleda reports that in 1116 he found 400-500 Jews in Rhodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After 1522, when the Turks occupied Rhodes, Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent brought to Rhodes many of the Jews that in 1492 and 1501 the Spanish Inquisition expelled. He granted them tax exemptions and other privileges and allowed them to live in the \u201cOld Town of Rhodes\u201d. The wealthiest Jews of Rhodes were silk and sulfur merchants. In 1819, Behor Alhadeff founded a bank that developed into one of the most powerful credit institutions in the East. But most were shopkeepers, doctors, goldsmiths, carpenters, tanners, bookbinders, dyers, spinsters, vendors and fishermen. In 1900 the Jews of Rhodes numbered 4500-5000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The seizure of power of the Ottoman Empire by the Young Turks, the Italo-Turkish War and WWI which followed, created political and economic instability, due to which 2\/3 of the Jews of Rhodes emigrated in the first quarter of the 20th century. Half of them went to the United States, seeking better economic and political living conditions and religious freedom. Among the 13,485 Dodecanese who immigrated to America, there were 1,534 Jews, coming mainly from Rhodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are several similarities but also differences between Greek and Jewish immigrants, chronologically the arrivals in America go hand in hand, but the Jewish immigration takes on larger dimensions. Of the 4,500-5,000 Jews who lived in the Dodecanese, more than 1,500 immigrated to America, and of the 120,000 Greeks, 11,904. Also, Jews immigrated as families, unlike Greek immigrants who were, for the most part, single men. The group migrations of the Jews are more organized, because the Jews lived concentrated in the Old City and had the help of Jewish organizations abroad. But for their overseas journey they used the same ocean liners as the Greeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike the Greeks who went to the coal mines, steel mills, and sponge diving in Tarpon Springs, most Jews settled in big cities where there were large Jewish communities and where they could find support and work: New York, Seattle, Los Angeles, Atlanta, New Orleans, Montgomery, Miami, Portland, York PA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Jews of Rhodes, who went to New York, settled in Jewish neighborhoods, such as the one around Rivington Street. The others went by train to the Pacific coast and settled in Seattle, and from there, several continued south to Portland and Los Angeles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many others took the train to the Southern states and settled in Montgomery and from there moved, first to Atlanta and later to Birmingham, Miami and New Orleans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today there live in the United States more than 10,000 Jews of Dodecanese origin who reside 4000-5000 in New York, 3000 in Los Angeles, 1500 in Atlanta, 1000 in Seattle and the rest in Montgomery, Miami, New Orleans and other cities. The Diaspora Jews of Rhodian origin, in whatever country of the world they are, do not forget their Rhodian identity and call themselves Rhodeslis (Rhodians).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Dodecanese Jews, like their Greek compatriots, founded associations to build synagogues, cultural centers and cemeteries, to help the sick and poor in America and Rhodes, to organize social events and in every way to be able to cope with the problems they faced in their new homeland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1909 in Seattle, they founded the association \u201cKoupa Ozer Dalim Ansce\u201d, with the aim of helping the poor Jews of Rhodes, and in 1910 the \u201cBrotherhood League of Rhodes\u201d was founded in New York. In 1912, the Sephardic Jews of Los Angeles, mainly Rhodians, founded the \u201cSociedad Ahavat Shalom\u201d (Society of Peace and Love) for religious purposes and to support the sick and poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1908, the Rhodians and other Sephardic Jews founded a brotherhood in Montgomery and for the first-time celebrated Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. A little later, in 1910, the Rhodians of Montgomery founded the \u201cBenevolent Society\u201d, with the aim of raising money to help their sick, poor and other suffering countrymen. In 1910, the Sephardic Jews of Atlanta, mainly Rhodians, founded the \u201cLovers of Peace\u201d and for the first-time celebrated Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur at the home of President Isaac Hazan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Dodecanese Jews were Turkish citizens and when America entered the WWI were considered citizens of an enemy country, but many, like their Greek compatriots, enlisted in the American army and served in Europe. In WWII, hundreds of second-generation Dodecanese Jews served in the US Armed Forces and fought in Europe, the Pacific and other fronts. Many were injured and several lost their lives in this war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
