Dodecanese in the Greek Battalion and the Office of Strategic Services<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In January 1943, by decision of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the (Greek) 122nd<\/sup> Infantry Battalion was created, to commemorate the 122nd<\/sup> anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821, with Major Panagiotis Klainos as its commander. Klainos was born in Sparta in 1907 and came to America with his father in 1912 and was the first Greek American to graduate from West Point. The Greek Government in exile requested the creation of the Greek Battalion <\/strong>to help in the resistance against the Germans in the occupied Greece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the Greek Americans who volunteered in the Greek Battalion were many Dodecanese, and among them were sailors of the merchant marine, who because of the war found themselves stranded in America. The Battalion\u2019s military training took place at Ft. Carson CO, and later some of its members were transferred to other military units and to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), which later evolved into the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michael Vassilakis and Anthony Logothetis, from Karpathos, were assigned to the 26th Division. They landed at Utah Beach, fought along the Salonnes-Moncourt Canal and around the Moncourt Forest and captured the towns of Dieuze, Saar Union and Saarreguemines. They took part in the Battle of the Ardennes and the capture of the city of Arsdorf. They fought at the crossing of the Wiltz River and the capture of the town of Grumelscheid. They crossed the Clerf and Rhine rivers and took part in the Battles for the capture of the city of Hanua and the crossing of the Main River. From there they advanced and took part in the occupation of the cities of Fulda and Meiningen. Continuing, they entered Austria where they captured the city of Linz and, changing direction, entered Czechoslovakia, and once they crossed the Vltata River Germany surrendered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In July 1943, the OSS requested 160 volunteers from the Greek Battalion, who had to be fluent in the Greek language and in excellent physical condition, to be used in dangerous missions behind the German rear in occupied Greece. The volunteers were trained by OSS agents, British commandos, and French guerrillas. Finally, 181 officers and non-commissioned officers were selected, who were divided into eight groups, which were sent to the Mediterranean and assigned to the 2671st<\/sup> Special Reconnaissance Battalion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From there, in 1944, by sea and by parachute, under the cover of darkness, dispersed throughout Greece and collaborated with the British military and the rebels of the EAM and EDES, some also fought in Yugoslavia. Their mission was to inflict the greatest possible damage on the enemy and destroy the communications, railway networks and bridges used by the Germans to redeploy and withdraw German forces, and their equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The eight groups conducted 76 operations with more than 2000 enemy killed, wounded or captured, destroyed 15 bridges, 11 locomotives, 32 railway carriages, 63 military vehicles, 6 garrisons and more than 9000 meters of railway. The action was so effective that they too were subject to Hitler\u2019s Edict No. 003830\/42g: \u201cFrom now on, all enemies in so-called Commando missions, even if they are in military uniform, whether armed or unarmed, in battle or in flight, will be slaughtered to the last man.\u201d Their successful actions earned the \u2018Presidential Unit Citation\u2019, two individuals awarded the Silver Star Metals, Spiro Psarakis and Gus L. Palans, and several \u2018Bronze Star Medals\u2019 to other members of the eight units. In the appendix that follows at the end of the English text, are recorded the composition of the eight groups, the date, and the area where they started their activity in Greece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the 181 volunteers, in the 1st group were Minas Cavallieros and Gregory Pahoulis from Karpathos. And as Cavallieros said, his group was destined to operate in the Dodecanese, and planned to land in Karpathos to destroy the Germans\u2019 radar. The mission was aborted because the action against the Germans in the Dodecanese had been undertaken by the British, in fact the British attempt to destroy the radar failed before it was completed. (Responsible for guarding the area where the German radar was located was Lieutenant Hans Vogeler, and several years later, I brought him into contact with Cavallieros. An interesting correspondence between the two former enemies ensued, which gives interesting information about the Dodecanese during WWII).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 10, 1944, Kavallieros\u2019 and Pahoulis\u2019 group landed secretly around Parga. Among them was John Tsouderos, the son of the then Prime Minister of the Greek Government in Cairo. They collaborated with Zerva\u2019s guerrillas and, with sabotage and skirmishes, harassed the Germans. Cavallieros and Pahoulis and their unit operated for five months in the wider area of Souli, Igoumenitsa, Paramythia, Parga, Ioannina and Preveza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later the Greek American group disbanded, and its soldiers were integrated into American military formations fighting in Europe. On September 15, 1944, Kavalieros and Pahoulis were assigned to the 82nd Parachute Division under General George Patton. In December 1944 they took part in the Battle of Bastogne and in March 1945 they were among the first to cross the Rhine River. After the defeat of Germany, Pahoulis served with the American army in Berlin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NDCA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National Dodecanese Council of America (NDCA) also cooperated with the OSS, which gathered information of military nature, from newly arrived Dodecanese and anti-fascist Italian soldiers who served in Dodecanese and passed to OSS. It also provided a list of Dodecanesian patriots living in the Dodecanese, Athens and Egypt who were able to contribute to the common allied struggle. Also, Manolis Athanasiadis from Gennadi, Rhodes, a dynamic member of NDCA and a professor at Columbia University, taught Greek to American officers who were going to serve with the guerrillas in German-occupied Greece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
