Dodecanese began to America (United States), it also began to Argentina. And while in America, most of them got a job in coal mines and other manual work, in Argentina most of them worked in trade and construction, and the Simians built \u2018San Miguel de Panormita\u2019, the first orthodox church in South America. But, with the passage of time, the Dodecanese community in Argentina began to fade and today is a memory. On the contrary, the Dodecanese community in America took root, flourished and bore fruit, and is the most dynamic Dodecanese community in the world. On May 12, 1905, Maria Diakomichali, wife of Minas Parzazis from Karpathos, arrived in New Orleans, and she was one of the first Dodecanese women to set foot in America, and in 1908 their daughter Fragoulia was born, the first Dodecanese child to be born in America. Parzazis\u2019 example was followed by other Dodecanese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several single men who came to America, would return to their islands, marry, and after a few years bring their wives. Manolis Stamatakis emigrated in 1903, in 1909 he returned to Karpathos and married Vangela Alexiadis. He returned to Karpathos in 1913 for a few months, and in 1916 his wife came to America, with their five-year-old son John and two-year-old daughter Zoe. The following year, their son Nick was born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As mentioned above, Ekaterini Maravelia from Leros was the first Dodecanese woman who came single to America, in 1906 her sister Eudoxia followed, and both became sought-after brides. On October 28, 1912 came from Karpathos to America Venesiana, the daughter of the priest Minas Aslanidis, and in less than four months later, on February 13, 1913 she married Nick Saitis. They were married in New Castle PA, and since there was no priest, they brought one from Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Almost always, the Dodecanese women who came single to America, married men who came from the same island and often from the same village, a rule that was not always inviolable. On March 2, 1913, Maria Panteli came to America, and two years later she married Efthimios Dalianis from Evia. The \u201cpartner of life\u201d should have the qualifications that would allow her to create, serve, support and adorn the sacred institution of the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the understanding that Greek women have these special qualities, it was most likely that he would return, for a while, to his island where, almost certainly, his mother would have a bride ready for him, or if he married in America again the bride had to be from his island. This second choice was also the most difficult, because in America there was a disproportion between men and women, where the Dodecanese women were very few and made it difficult for men to make their choices, while it favored women, who were allowed to choose a spouse between many candidates. On the contrary, where in Greece the marriage of the girls was a constant concern of their parents, in America they married their daughters well, without even paying a dowry and the wedding expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In America, the Greek woman easily adapted to her new life, preferred the familiar expatriate environment, and participated in charity and church activities. She rarely worked outside her home unless it was a family business. The man considered it degrading for his wife, even his sister, to work because it would question his ability to financially take care of his home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>The father is master<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within the family, the undisputed master was the father. He had all the powers; he was the one whom everyone had to respect and obey. The children were to submit to his will and the wife to respect his decisions. Family ties were very close. All power went to the father, who made the laws that had to be applied for the family to function properly. He often made the decisions without consulting his wife, who had to defend them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>The mother is the manager<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the role of women was catalytic: together with their household, they assumed the obligation to keep their children within the Greek family. Hundreds of families, surrounded by millions of people with their own languages and customs, are trying to keep their own cultural heritage. A difficult and persistent struggle, as the memories of the children of the time testify:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>* Since there was no Greek church in Richland, my mother took us every Sunday to Martins Ferry, where an archimandrite had established a Greek church. We walked three miles over a bridge to get to the other side of the river.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>* When I went to school for the first time, the teacher put me in kindergarten until I learned to speak English, because at home my mother only spoke Greek to us.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>* My mother used to play the lyre with her mouth for us to dance.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>* My mother washed the clothes of the men who worked in the coal mines and with the money she earned she bought a gold coin every month for my necklace when I will get married.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>* Twice a month my mother would take us by train to Canonsburg to her cousin Penelope to meet and play with her and the other Rhodian and Karpathian children.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>* When there were parties in our house, my mother would put us in a corner to listen to the lyra, the tsabuna and the mandinades (songs).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>* Since my father could not leave his job, my mother took us to all the Dodecanese dances that took place in the different cities of America. In them we met other young men and women and resulted many marriages.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>* My mother didn\u2019t have much education, but she bought a first grade and some elementary books. On the other days we helped her make the pastries, the cakes, the red eggs, and Easter\u2019s lamb.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>* The women who came to our house talked with my mother about our island, the vineyards, the fields and about their relatives who lived on the island. We who listened to them learned where each of our olive groves was and how many olives trees each one had. We knew all our relatives, even our third cousins. We could describe our house on the island, even the toilet at the edge of the field. We knew the churches, chapels and festivals of the island.
