Integration and Assimilation in America<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur mood from Piraeus to Marseilles was cheerful, but as soon as we entered the Atlantic, the lyre, the tsambuna and the songs ceased, and we became melancholic for the world we had left behind us.\u201d With these words, Nick Saitis described his first trip to America in 1906. To endure psychologically, the immigrants needed a familiar environment, which would offer them confidence and security. Therefore, their environment in America consisted of relatives and fellow villagers, who lived in the same neighborhood, in the same house and worked in the same coal mine or factory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The immigrants gathered in certain districts, where they created their own \u201ccastle\u201d with their families, the churches they built, the schools they opened, the societies they founded and the neighborhood coffeehouses. However, it was a castle without gates, since its residents went in and out to go to work, to shop and for other needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leaving the \u201ccastle\u201d they encountered the outside world and were influenced by what they saw and heard. At first, they seemed strange and foreign, but with time they got used to them. It was only a matter of time before they chose the ones they liked. In time, the \u201ccastle\u201d fell, not because of war or revolution, but because circumstances forced it. But it didn\u2019t disappear. They remained, within each one, in his soul and consciousness, the \u201cmaterials\u201d from which it was created and carried wherever they went.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The societies with their dance parties helped our compatriots to keep their ties.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

They preferred areas where they could find work and organize their social life, among compatriots, contributing to the preservation of their cultural heritage that they tried to pass on to their children. Later they harmonized with the laws and institutions of America, preserving the characteristics of their own culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volunteers<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once America entered WWI, thousands of Greeks volunteered for the American armed forces, wanting to prove that they loved their adopted country and were part of it. Those who fought gained confidence in themselves, believed in the ideals of America, wrapped themselves in its flag and made the decision to stay in America. Several married and raised families. Steady work, success in business, and service in the American armed forces gave them a sense of security and permanence, and the Greek-speaking press and expatriate organizations urged them to take the American citizenship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Naturalization<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, naturalization faced a great reaction, because for the Greeks it meant a declaration of loyalty to a new homeland, which was tantamount to \u201cbetrayal\u201d of the distant homeland, and assimilation into American society. Those who acquired citizenship could enter the political life of America and work more effectively for the new homeland, but they too in a corner of their hearts kept their beloved homeland. Immigrants felt gratitude and respect for America, but it did not mean forgetting the old homeland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On May Day, when others participated in Bolshevik demonstrations, they abstained, wanting to declare that their ideals and values are identical with those of the Americans. After all, freedom, equality and human rights were born from a Greek womb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the ideological identification of the two cultures, for many naturalization automatically meant de-Hellenization. They argued that the Greeks have the qualities of their ancient ancestors and are not going to be assimilated by a foreign culture. However, many consider these ideas incompatible with reality. Since they lived permanently in America, why did they have to be \u201cforeigners\u201d at the same time?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, for practical reasons, naturalization increased. The Immigration Act of 1924 made it difficult for women, children and other relatives to come to America. They had to get the American citizenship before they could bring them to America. The naturalization of Greek Americans facilitated their participation in American politics and helped Greek national claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second generation<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1910, of the 10,322 Greek children born in America, 7,293 had both Greek parents, 2,548 had a Greek father and 481 had a Greek mother. In 1920, of the 47,110 Greek children born in America, 38,465 had both Greek parents, 8,368 had a Greek father and 277 had a Greek mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second generation of Greek Americans was born into a family with strong family, cultural and ethnic ties. On one side were the parents, the priest and the Greek teacher, who knew the old world they left behind. On the other hand, the public school with their non-Greek friends, who came into contact every day, and the American immigration policy aimed at integrating them into American society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The children were annoyed when their parents spoke Greek in front of Americans, because they identified themselves as \u201cforeigners\u201d, at the same time they boasted that they were Americans. Young people were eager to enter American society and be accepted by classmates and friends. Their problem was not understood by their parents, who wanted to preserve their Greek language, religion and cultural tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1924 when the immigration law changed and made it more difficult to immigrate to America, the naturalization of our countrymen increased.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Economic crisis<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problems of the financial crisis became their own problems. Concerns for America\u2019s economic recovery were common to Americans and Greeks, as was their concern for the future of democracy, in view of the establishment of totalitarian governments in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their participation in solving America\u2019s economic problems reduced their interest in Greek affairs. Their garden in Long Island gained more interest than their vineyard in Kos. The interstate roads of America became more exciting than the paths of Karpathos and the skyscrapers of New York overshadowed the grandeur of Attaverus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Priests, parents and \u201cpatriots\u201d asked: \u201cWhat will become of the children born in America?\u201d. Finally, they decided to establish societies and schools to teach that the values of Greek culture are universal and did not compete with American, created from the same values. Ultimately, they were limited to maintaining the Greek faith and language. Despite all this, the new generation did not cut all ties with Greece. The Church and local associations constantly reminded them of Greece, which they often visited to meet relatives and friends, but also to find a bride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WWII<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Italian invasion and the heroic Greek resistance aroused admiration in America and had an impact on Greek Americans who turned their soul\u2019s gaze with affection and pride to the motherland. So, with America\u2019s entry into the war, the sons of despised immigrants entered America\u2019s armed forces with enthusiasm, determined to defend the ideals of both their homelands, Liberty and Democracy. This improved the position of the Greeks in America and accelerated their integration. Many stopped considering themselves Greeks, rather than Americans of Greek descent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the War<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The post-war years were a period of progress and prosperity for the Greek Americans. Thousands who returned from the battlefields took advantage of the government veterans programs, continued their studies and opened businesses. Meanwhile, Greek Americans began campaigning in favor of Greek national claims, and American newspapers highlighted the philhellenic sentiments of the American people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the WWI, thousands of compatriots, like Jacob Kazavis, volunteered in the American armed forces, wanting to prove that they loved their adopted country and were a part of it.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

After the War immigration<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Immediately after the war, American Hellenism was boosted numerically, from 1946-1960 more than 56,000 Greeks came to America and many Greek Americans visited Greece and continued to send parcels and financial aid to their relatives. At the same time, the profile of the immigrants changed, among them were those who came for higher studies. Even the economic immigrants were not \u201cat the mercy of God\u201d, they had relatives, fellow villagers and friends, willing to support them. Nevertheless, many of the new immigrants felt a sense of superiority over the old ones, overlooking the fact that these \u201cuneducated\u201d people, in troubled times, managed to acquire respectable properties and progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new immigrants gave new life to the Greek community and refilled the tank of Hellenism in America. The number of potential husbands for second and third generation Greek American women increased. The common nationality and religion, combined with their great desire to preserve their Greek \u201cphysiognomy\u201d, united and put the newcomers on the Greek American trajectory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Integration<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the 1960s, Greek Americans had fully integrated into America and were prominent: In politics, they occupied notable positions as federal, state and municipal leaders. In sciences they excelled, as professors and researchers. In the arts they distinguished themselves as producers, directors, actors, architects, painters and writers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In WWII, thousands of expatriates, such as Antonis Giorgakis who took part in the Normandy landings, served in the American armed forces.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

One more opportunity<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The immigration law of 1965 gave the opportunity to 100,000 Greeks to immigrate to America in the decade 1965-75. It is the last \u201cblood donation\u201d that American Hellenism received and gave new life to societies and churches. This time they are not coming alone, they are bringing their wives and children, who first attend public schools and continue higher studies at universities. The Greek community of America is advancing with great and steady steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These children are conscious Greek children and their home, a living Greek garden: they speak Greek, and on Sundays their parents take them to church and Catechism, and on weekdays, to the afternoon Greek school, and they participate in youth organizations. In the summer, as soon as the schools close, they leave to spend their holidays in Greece. There they meet their relatives, encounter the local children and create friendships. They visit the sights and enjoy the beaches of the islands, participate in the social and cultural events. Thus baptized, they return to America with impressions that will accompany them throughout their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other early immigrants took jobs in the steel mills.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The current generation of Greek Americans is not only made up of the children of immigrants, but there are also the grandchildren, great-grandchildren and even great-grandchildren of those who came at the beginning of the 20th century and after, who know that one of their ancestors came from Greece, they are Americans of Greek origin and visit their place of origin. There are also Greek-Americans, who during the day at work feel like Americans, and at night, when they return home, they become Greeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

. In 1905, Maria Diakomichali came to America and in 1908 her daughter Fragoulia Parzazi was born. Fragoulia got married, had children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Today, more than a century later, we see a miracle: The great-grandchildren of Maria Diakomichalis did not forget their Dodecanese roots. They live and feel Greek and regularly visit the island of their origin.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next generation got jobs in restaurants and soon opened their own, becoming entrepreneurs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

. In 1903 Manolis Stamatakis immigrated to America. In 2003, a century later, his great- great-grandson, who bears his name, was baptized in the same baptistery where his great-great-grandfather was baptized 122 years earlier.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right now, the words of Manolis Athanasiadis come to my mind: \u201cI was born Turk, I grew up as Italian, I grew old man as American, and I will die Greek\u201d<\/em> and trying to answer the question: \u201cwhat will be the future of Greeks in America?\u201d.
