Hellenic with its eyes fixed on Greece, and every year on the celebration of March 25th it marched down New York\u2019s 5th Avenue proudly holding the Greek Flag. At the associations\u2019 meetings they talked about their villages and islands and the problems they faced, and whatever they collected from the dances and other events all went there to build schools, churches and community halls, create sports fields, open rural roads and for other public purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The decade of 1965-75, after the change in America\u2019s immigration law, coincided with the last Greek migration stream to America, and the new immigrants were engaged and interested, like the previous ones, in the same issues. And having recent memories and experiences, they were interested in the political events in Greece, and some of them at the time of the elections, individually or in groups, went to Greece to exercise their electoral rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, various Greek politicians who came to America for national holidays or societies events found the opportunity to promise that the expatriates will be given the right to participate in the Greek elections by mail, as other countries had done years ago. (In 1960 while serving with the US Army in the Panama Canal Zone, I voted in the US presidential election by mail).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The promises continued every year to no avail. In the meantime, the Cyprus problem arose, now the new immigrants turned their interest to take the American citizenship and participate in the American elections. Thus, with their vote and financial support, helped to elect, even today, expatriates and philhellene politicians who defend the fair and just Greek interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After 40 years of promises, the Greek Parliament decided to give to the expatriates the right to vote by mail or electronically. Meanwhile, most of the 1965-75 immigrants are old or not with us, and their children and grandchildren, after so many years of promises, are not interested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is, as far as the American Greek community is concerned, \u201cAfter a holiday pass \u2026 the gift is not a gift anymore\u201d.
