The Battle for the Dodecanese \u2013 The Germans occupy Leros.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On October 5, 1943, immediately after the capture of Kos, Lieutenant General Muller was ordered to prepare for the capture of Leros, where one of the largest naval bases in the Mediterranean was located. By this time the Italians had around 6,000 men under Vice Admiral Luigi Mascherra, and the British had landed on the island three of the four battalions of the 234th Brigade, more than 2,000 men under Brigadier General Robert A. Tilney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the invasion of Leros, the Germans were going to use the experienced forces used in the invasion of Kos, but first they had to be replaced, as a guard, by the IX-999 battalion that would come from Crete. At this time in the Aegean region, the Germans had superiority in the air, while the British dominated the sea. A convoy that started on October 7th from Crete was destroyed, the second convoy that followed suffered the same fate, a total of 659 Germans were killed. They lost not only the soldiers destined for the invasion of Kos, but also the landing craft destined for the landing on Leros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A third convoy started from Crete with the cargo boats Karl and Trapani carrying the XI-999 battalion. Karl was sunk by the U-boat Torbay on 16 October, and Trapani reached Kalymnos and disembarked the troops it was carrying, but the boat was destroyed on the night of 17\/18 October by Allied bombardment from Mandalya off the Turkish coast in the Gulf of Kos. Also, the cargo boat Ingeborg carrying Battalion X-999 was sunk by the submarine Unsparing. The survivors of the three battalions were armed and took over the garrison of Kos and Kalymnos, which had been abandoned by the British and the Italians offered no resistance. At the same time, the German air force caused great damage to the British navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Germany, to solve the problem of transport and landing means, brought other ships through the Danube, the Black Sea and the Dardanelles camouflaged as merchant ships. Other ships were transported by rail in pieces to Piraeus where they were assembled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The craft and the amphibious Battalion-II were gathered in Lavrio from where they started on November 5th for Leros. Playing \u201ccat and mouse\u201d with the British navy, they went to Paros and then to Naxos, from where they arrived on November 8 in Amorgos. There they split into two convoys, one went to Astypalaia and the other to Levitha. Finally, on November 10, the two convoys arrived at Kos and Kalymnos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the meantime, Lieutenant General Muller moved his headquarters to Kalymnos and with the unit leaders (Gruppe) drew up the following plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two sections of Gruppe-II, coming from Kos and Kalymnos, would land in Kryfos Bay and in two bays further north on the eastern side of the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gruppe-III, originating from Kalymnos, would land at Vagia Bay in northern Leros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A section of Gruppe-II, coming from Kalymnos, would land at Gourna Bay in the southern part of the island and at Drymonas and Kefalos bays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A regiment of paratroopers was ready at Tatoi with the intention of dropping on Rachi Hill, the narrowest part of the island, with the aim of cutting off all communication between the northern and southern parts of the island. The Germans also had other reserve forces in Athens, including a battalion of paratroopers brought from Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next day Lieutenant General Muller would land in Alinda Bay with his engineers and staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For their part, the British had around 2,000 men under Brigadier General Tilney, distributed in the northern, central and southern parts of the island. The Italians had about 6,000 under Vice-Admiral Mascherpa, distributed around the bays of Lakki, Gourna and Xerokambos, and on all the heights where they had placed artillery. The main disadvantage of the defenders was the superiority of the German air force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the morning of November 12, three German battalions landed on the eastern side of Leros. One of these battalions that landed at Kryfos Bay occupied the strategic Kleidi hill that connects the northern and southern parts of the island. While a battalion intended to land in the northwestern part of Leros received fire from the Italian artillery and was forced to take refuge in Agathonisi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company landed on the south side of Alinda Bay managed to capture part of the strong Lago artillery, which the Germans captured the day after the landing of the amphibious assaults group. Meanwhile after the paratroopers dropped at 13:00 on the first day at Rachi, the Germans cut Leros in two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A battalion that failed to land at Gourna Bay landed the next day on the north side of Alinda Bay. The British navy was unable to intercept the German transports because during the night the German air force attacked a British naval squadron and sank a destroyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On November 14, the British counterattack began. In their attempt to recapture Pitiki they faced strong resistance from the Germans and were forced to retreat with heavy losses. The British attempt to recapture Meroviglia had the same results. More successful was the British attack on the Kleidi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the fate of Leros was already predetermined, while the German forces are constantly being strengthened, the British and Italian are weakening. On the morning of November 15, a British counterattack was launched around Rachi without result. On the contrary, in the afternoon of the same day, the Germans attacked and occupied the Castle of the Knights, uniting all the German fronts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On November 16th<\/sup> the Germans attacked Merovigli and came outside the British headquarters forcing Brigadier Tilney to surrender. Thus ended the Battle of Leros, one of the most important battles of WWII in the Mediterranean region. After the war, in 1995, the magazine \u201cAFTER THE BATTLE\u201d dedicated its 90th issue to the \u201cBattle of Leros\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The results of the Battle of Leros were painful for both sides. In the four days that the battle lasted, 200 British, 230 Italians and 246 Germans lost their lives. There were also 280 British and 677 German wounded, and 162 Germans missing. And in the period of approximately two months, which lasted the war conflicts related to Leros, including the sinking of the Greek destroyer Olga, the British had 250 dead and 3200 prisoners, the Italians 400 dead and 5351 prisoners, the Germans 520 dead and the Greeks 71 dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As had happened before in the Battle of Kos, the Germans executed 12 Italian officers, and Vice-Admiral Mascherpa was handed over to the remnants of Fascist Italy, existed in northern Italy under Mussolini, where he was convicted of disloyalty to their former allies and executed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
