\u201cHow do you look at us motionless\u2026. where are your thoughts? \u2026.\u201d wrote Aristotle Valaoritis in his poem addressing Patriarch Gregory V, at the unveiling of his statue at the University of Athens. Now, when I go to swim and see the beach covered with umbrellas, sunbeds and garbage, my thoughts go back to my childhood, when the same beach was spotless, without umbrellas, sunbeds and garbage, and anyone who wanted shade went under two huge sea trees that a longsighted had planted at the edge of the beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus, suddenly the \u201cTowel\u201d war broke out. On one side are those who want the beaches to remain as public spaces, and on the other those who believe that the beaches are spaces for exploitation and often trespassing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early in the morning I go to swim and see that part of the beach that the Municipality had left as a public area has been occupied by umbrellas, and garbage left on the sand. Soon a tourist comes. She looks at the trash and I see her thinking.
