Besides being a commercial center for the opposite region of Asia Minor, Kastellorizo was one of the important shipping centers in the Eastern Mediterranean. Kastellorian sailing ships traveled from Alexandria and the other ports of the Middle East to the Adriatic and the Aegean, and passing through the Dardanelles entered the Black Sea, went to Venice, Smyrna and Odessa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because, in WWI, the Ottoman Empire allied with Germany against the Entente, France occupied Kastellorizo along with other parts of the Ottoman Empire. After the end of the war, on March 1, 1921, France ceded Kastellorizo to Italy which annexed it with the other Dodecanese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The annexation of Kastellorizo by Italy had disastrous results for the economy of the island, which was separated from Asia Minor, its economic hinterland. Within a few years, around 10,000 Kastellorizians left their island. And three days later, on September 13, the Greek destroyer \u201cAdmiral Kountouriotis\u201d arrives, carrying other British soldiers. At the top was a Greek flag, and below it was written that Kastellorizo was liberated, implying that your turn is coming).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The British used Kastellorizo as a naval base and forward supply center, but it also became the target of relentless bombing by German planes. On 17 October 16 Stukas bombarded the island settlement with 1,000-pound bombs, killing around 20 Kastellorizians and as many Italians. It is not the same for Kastellorizo. You pass through the streets, go up the cobblestones, pass under the domes, the squares, the \u201crooftops\u201d, and you see nothing. No dog, no cat. My steps sound heavy on the cobblestones, they echo in the empty houses without windows, the houses with three or two walls\u2026 Everything is gutted. The boxes were broken, the dowry was in tatters\u2026 everything was in ruins\u2026 For an hour I was spinning in this death. Everything, absolutely everything I saw was tortured. All stripped, spilled, twisted, tangled.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Kastellorizians were forced to leave their island and become refugees in the Middle East, until the war ended. But their problems did not end there either.
