The ruins of Santa Mar\u00eda la Antigua del Dari\u00e9n were found in Northern Colombia near Southern Panama.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>The visit of Archbishop Elpidophoros brings back memories from Panama, 60 years ago<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>By Manolis Cassotis<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The official visit of Archbishop Elpidoforos to Panama to celebrate the 510<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;anniversary of the founding of the Diocese of Panama and the feast of Santa Maria La Antigua, patron saint of Panama, brings back memories of the early 1960s when I was serving with the US Army in Panama Canal Zone. Every year, in the celebration of Santa Maria La Antigua, the US Army sends honor guards, which in 1961 I happened to be a part of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first church of Santa Maria La Antigua was built in the 12th century in the city of Valladolid in central Spain. In 1510 the Spanish Conquistadores founded the first city in South America, Santa Mar\u00eda la Antigua del Dari\u00e9n, known as Dariena. But in 1519, when the city of Panama was founded, the Conquistadores abandoned Dariena, and in 1524 it was burned by the natives. But the Panamanians continued to celebrate Santa Maria La Antigua as the patron saint of Panama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to Santa Maria La Antigua there are other attractions, such as the ruins of the old city of Panama, known as Panama la Vieja, built by the Spaniard Pedro Arias de Avila in 1519 and in 1671 destroyed by the English pirate Henry Morgan. Also, among the most attractions of the city is the \u201cAltar de Oro\u201d (Golden Icon), which the friars rescued from the Morgan pirates, and later placed in the church of San Jose in the new city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/a141a-1Panama7-Small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/a141a-1Panama7-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-56736\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u03a4\u03bf \u201cAltar de Oro\u201d (\u03a7\u03c1\u03c5\u03c3\u03cc \u0395\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03bf\u03c3\u03c4\u03ac\u03c3\u03b9) \u03c0\u03bf\u03c5 \u03b4\u03b9\u03ad\u03c3\u03c9\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd \u03bf\u03b9 \u03bc\u03bf\u03bd\u03b1\u03c7\u03bf\u03af \u03b1\u03c0\u03cc \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2 \u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03b1\u03c4\u03ad\u03c2 \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 Morgan. In Panama City was the Church of the Annunciation (Iglesia De La Annunciation) and in Collon was the Church of Saint Antonius (Iglesia De San Antonio). A priest officiated in both churches, holidays and Sundays alternately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the church of Saint Antonius, I met Anthony Tagaropoulos from Kymi in Evia, a successful businessman but also a very simple person, he was also the unpaid consul of Greece. He arrived in Panama at a young age and in 1911 founded the company Tagaropulos S.A., which was active in shipping matters and later expanded into other businesses. His bust is in Panama\u2019s Canal Pilots Club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In January 1962, the late Archbishop of North and South America Iakovos visited Panama and celebrated the Epiphany with the customary throwing of the cross into the sea. Since none of the divers caught the cross, the Archbishop asked help from the Americans. After many attempts, one of the frogmen found the cross at the bottom of the sea, in two meters of mud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Archbishop expressed his thanks by presenting the frogman with another similar cross. Many times, I saw ships passing through the canal with Greek names and the Greek flag flying. Facing the blue and white flag, I felt that Greece had come to meet me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1960, America granted the destroyer Lance-II to Greece, and its crew came from Greece to Long Beach CA for training, and after three months of training, the destroyer left for Greece, via the Panama Canal. Before crossing the Atlantic, it was hosted by the US Navy at Rodman Naval Station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As soon as I heard about it, I went to visit it. Great was the joy of the crew that a Greek American soldier went to visit them, but greater was my own emotion that I could not imagine that five thousand miles away from Greece I would find the opportunity to be inside an \u201cuntouchable\u201d Greek environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was mealtime, I ate with them, and we started talking. Where I was from and where each of them was from. After a while I found someone from Korydallos, who knew the former Karpathian MP Pericles Chrysocheris. Cases like this make you think: How small the world is and how big Greece is!
