Sixteen million Americans served in World War II, among them several tens of thousands of Greek Americans, including thousands of Dodecanesians, among whom were hundreds of Karpathians. Americans fought for Democracy and against Nazism and Fascism. Our expatriates also fought for the same reason and additionally for the liberation of their Homeland, and in addition the Dodecanesians fought for the liberation and integration of their islands with their \u201cMother\u201d Greece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Army gave Nick Makris a few days pass to rest from the constant sufferings of the war.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

It has been 78 years since the end of WWII and of the 16,000,000 who served in the war less than 100,000 still are alive, most of them centenarians, and every day 180 pass into eternity. So, a few days ago, the centenarian Nikos Evangelou Makris left for the eternal journey, leaving us as a legacy, his fight for the ideals of America and his original homeland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nick Makris was born in Karpathos and immigrated to America at a young age, and when America entered the war, he was called up and served from August 1, 1942 to December 3, 1945, until the war ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He served under General George Patton, in the 3rd Army Corps, in the 80th<\/sup> Division, the so-called \u201cBlue Ridge Division\u201d, in the 317th<\/sup> Regiment, in the 2nd<\/sup> Battalion with Company F, and rose to the rank of staff sergeant. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Bravery and received two Purple Hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He took part in the Normandy landings at Utah Beach, and then fought in France, and took part in the battles of the Ardennes, Bastogne, the Bulge and Luxembourg, and the crossing of the Moselle River. So intense, not only dangerous, were these battles that on March 8, 1945 they gave him a few days leave to rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the end of the war and his return to America he was very successful in the restaurant business, but he never forgot his service in the American army and his participation in the WWII. With great pride he wore his cap with the inscription \u201cWORLD WAR II VETERAN\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we were traveling together from Greece to America a few years ago and I saw the inscription on his cap, it was as if I was living with him the feelings that prevailed in Omogenia during the war years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
