Indeed, his relatives and friends responded and, with all \u201csecrecy\u201d, began to motivate other villagers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201csecret\u201d soon spread, and similar activity started by relatives and friends of the rival candidate for the same office with similar results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When all the expectations in Brooklyn were exhausted, the activists turned their attention to Cleveland Ohio, and then to Corpus Christi Texas, where are considerable Spoitan communities, with the same results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thus, on the day of the elections, several dozen Spoitans, traveling together on the same plane, found themselves in their village taking part in the electoral process, without affecting the result because there were approximately the same number of voters from both factions who crossed the Atlantic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>While the sound of the lyre still resounded\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few days after the elections was the feast of Saint George, the patron saint of the Village, and the voters who came from America stayed and celebrated with the permanent residents. The Saint\u2019s festival ended, and everyone took the return plane, and while the lyre, the lute and the mandinades from the festival still resounded in their ears, the political confrontations were forgotten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Karpathos is no exception to the involvement of the Dodecanesians in America in the local electoral process, the same is the case with other islands, and in some, such as Nisyros and Leros, they also participate as candidate councilmen and councilwomen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>John Catsimatidis and Peter Angelos<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, the great interest of our compatriots here is focused on the American municipal elections. A few years ago, John Catsimatidis of Nisyrian origin was a candidate for the office of mayor of New York. As well as Peter Angelos of Karpathian origin claimed the office of mayor of Baltimore Maryland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>George Athanson<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Greater success was achieved by George Athanson (Athanasiadis), of Rhodian origin, who was elected five consecutive two-year terms as mayor of Hartford (1971-1981), Connecticut\u2019s capital and largest city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Emanuel Koutsourakis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For 20 years, Emanuel Koutsourakis, of Kalymnian origin, was elected to various offices in the city of Dunedin and later, 1986-2000, elected mayor. Dunedin is in central west Florida and has a population of over 35,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nick Galantis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nick Galantis was born in Symi and for decades was elected and served as a city councilman, deputy mayor and then mayor of the city of Morehead North Carolina located on the Atlantic coast and with a population of around 10,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tarpon Springs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the mentioned mayors of Dodecanesian origin, there are also Michael Gianneskis (1956-60), Stefanus Lelekis (1964-68), George Psaras (1980-88), Thanasis Koulianos (1988-92), Annita Protu (1992-96) and Christ Alahouzos (2016-22), elected mayor of Tarpon Springs, Florida. Michael Gianneskis has his origin from Symi and the others from Kalymnos, while the current mayor Kostas Vatikiotis\u2019s origin is from Chalki.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Responsibilities and elections<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regarding municipal responsibilitiesand electoral procedures, there are significant differences between Greece and America. In America, in addition to other responsibilities, contrary to what happens in Greece, municipalities are responsible for primary and secondary education, the municipal justice system, police and the firefighting service, and the expenses of the municipality are mainly covered by property taxation. The administrators and directors of the Municipality\u2019s services are appointed by competition and technocratic criteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apart from the big cities, many municipalities, with a population of over 100,000 inhabitants, elects the mayor and five councilmen. The common ballot for all candidates of the mayoral elections consists of six lines and two or three columns, one for each party. In many municipalities, the citizens elect the judges and approve the budget drawn up by the municipal authority. The City of New York, of eight and a half million people, with a budget of 107 billion dollars elect the mayor and 50 councilmen. The common ballot consists of 51 lines and three to four columns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the contrary in Greece, the Municipality of Rhodes with a population of 125,000 inhabitants elects 43 councilmen apart from those of the villages, the ballot of each party includes around 500 names, and its length reaches one meter, minus two centimeters!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Municipality of Karpathos with a population of 6,567 inhabitants, apart from the mayor, elects 19 councilmen for the whole island and another 34 for the towns and villages. The ballot for each party can include up to 134 names!
