Once in a difficult election contest between farmers and shepherds, the shepherds brought to vote a mentally deficient. Now the unfortunate man had nowhere to go. He went to his house, took his lyre and climbed to a small hill opposite the village. There he played his lyre and plaintively sang:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I go to the upper ones, they drive me away, the lower ones throw me out,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Everyone\u2019s vote got into the voting box, but my got out.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neutral<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past, not only the voters but also the coffeehouses were divided into factions. Each voter went to a coffeehouse of his factional preferences. A new coffeehouse opened during the election campaign. The coffeehouse owner, to get customers, thought of not going with either of the two factions to attract the voters who did not want to demonstrate their party preference. He, with a piece of chalk, wrote \u201cNeutral\u201d on the door of his coffeehouse, but a whole week passed and not a single customer came through the door, all the voters were \u201ccolored\u201d, and he erased the inscription.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Golden Vote<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Pigadia of Karpathos, on the eve of the 1928 elections, a fisherman who was spending the night in the seas sold five to six kilograms of fish and went to buy ten kilograms of flour, for his wife to knead two or three loaves of bread for his family. The merchant not only didn\u2019t take money from him, but instead of ten kilograms he gave him a \u201ckatostariko\u201d (100 kilograms) sack, telling him: \u201clook, vote for George tomorrow\u201d. The next day when he met the merchant, he said to him: \u201cthe fish got into the fish trap\u201d. Since then, the vote in Karpathos became \u201cgolden\u201d. A sack of flour was sold for one golden pound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yagos<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1936, Andreas Chatzipanagiotis and Nicholas \u201cVenizelos\u201d (Lyristis) were candidates in the municipal elections of Pigadia. The eligible voters were 62. The predictions showed that the winner would win with one or two votes. Now Yagos had the opportunity to make some money. Lyristis paid Yagos to vote for him, Hatzipanagiotis did the same. But Hatzipanagiotis, who did not trust Yagos, calculated his prospecting votes, and figured out of 62 voters he was sure of 31, Yagos\u2019s vote was not necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the eve of the elections, Hadjipanagiotis\u2019s strongman took Yagos and after paying him locked him in a stable in Kouri and, to make sure he wouldn\u2019t leave to go vote, he took his pants. On election day when the sun set and the polls closed, he set Yagos free. The result: Chatzipanagiotis 31, Lyristis 30. Chatzipanagiotis did not enjoy his victory for long. The following year De Vecchi dismissed the elected mayors and replaced them with the Podestas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alas<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once, the candidate Mayor of a village asked a respectable man in the village and dear friend of his to be a candidate councilor on his ballot. Although he had never been involved in local elections he accepted and asked the candidate Mayor to give him 100 ballots of their party. He put a cross next to his name and visited his acquaintances and friends. And when he asked them if they would vote for him, each of them replied, \u201cAlas, I will not vote for you?\u201d and gave them one of the crossed ballots. The next day he went to the Mayor candidate and told him \u201cI am done, even if ten people do hold their promise, I will definitely be elected\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When on the election day the results came out, instead of the 90 votes he expected, he got only ten, and when they asked him about the election results, he answered: \u201cI got ten crosses and 90 \u2018Alas\u2019\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Balanos<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Around 1900, elections were held to elect the judges of Karpathos. The office was claimed, among others, by the Voladians Frank G. Sakellaridis and Vasilius Emm. Vardaoulis. In Karpathos, at the time of the Turkish rule when the local self-government was in force, the sense of collectivity was highly developed with the aim of the common interest and the common denominator was logic.
