remained strong, and after liberation it manifested itself proudly and dynamically. Some of them introduced Scouting to their islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of them was Nick Aristidis Nicolaidis, later pharmacist and mayor of Pigadia, who in the summer of 1947 founded the first Scout pack in Karpathos with around 25 children aged 11-15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Uniforms<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first problem the scouts faced was securing uniforms. At that time there was poverty, and impossible for the children\u2019s parents to save money to buy them uniforms. The problem was solved when Nicolaidis secured from government Italian and English military clothing from warehouses in Rhodes. Each scout was given military uniforms so that our mothers could make others to fit us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For shirts we used gray Italian military jackets made of hard material which, as our mothers sewed them, broke the needles and sometimes the carafe of the sewing machine. For trousers we used English short khaki trousers whose leg opening was wider than our waist. For hats he gave us brown berets worn by Indian soldiers. At our own expense we bought long socks, a meter of white cordon and a triangular blue handkerchief, we ourselves made rings of metal, leather or string to hold the handkerchief in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Sea Scouts, our many colors uniforms had to be dyed blue. Nicolaidis lit a big fire and in half barrel our multinational uniforms were painted and became Hellenized! But the paint did not stick easily and especially the shirts came out of the barrel with all the variations of blue, true Aegean sea with its islands. The teasing of the other children was daily, but it was canceled by the pride we felt. After all, we believed that \u201cThe uniform does not make the scout, but the scout makes the uniform \u201c, as our Leader used to tell us. To complete our outfit, we also needed poles. The Leader found an old beam, which Meleisis cut and made us poles. Vasos \u0397atzimichalis was the leader of the team from 1950-53, and during his leadership the wolf pack was added to the scouts and the pack developed into a group.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>First<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;appearance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Scout pack\u2019s first appeared was at the memorial service of King George the 2<sup>nd<\/sup>, with a church service and a parade on the main street, with the poles \u201cunder the arms\u201d. At the same time, Doctor Andreas Lambros was appointed local rector, who offered free medical treatment to the scouts. When the leader returned to Rhodes, the rector took over the pack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On March 7, 1948, Dodecanese Integration Day, the pack marched in the streets, but on the same day, Frango George Alexiadis gave birth to their second son. The doctor watched the scouts as well as the progress of the birth, and from time to time the pack stopped outside the expectant mother home\u2019s to watch the birth\u2019s progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Earthquake<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On February 9, 1948, a terrible earthquake shook Karpathos and caused great destruction, especially in Pyles. The leaders and deputy leaders of the scouting packs came from Rhodes to set up tents for the homeless and, with a boat, they arrived in Karpathos with dozens of tents. The gale was blowing, and the boat took shelter in the Vronti bay, the arriving scouts composed and sang the following song describing their journey (in free translation):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBlow the Northern wind, Mistral and Tramudana,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and brought us to Vronti\u2019s bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But we didn\u2019t know if we were going to land,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">but we didn\u2019t know if we were going to land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A little boat came to pick us up,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">but it didn\u2019t have enough room even in its hold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It came and went to unloaded us,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">it came and went to unload us \u2026\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scouts from Rhodes with those from Karpathos went to Pyles and set up several tents for the temporary accommodation of the earthquake victims. When after a time the tents returned to Rhodes, five of them were left in Karpathos for the scouts, who donated one to the Diocese which was set up on the beach of Kyra Panagia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After Nick Nikolaidis moved to Athens for his studies, Vasos Hatzimichalis took over as leader, with the director of the Public Fund, George Adamantidis, as local rector. At this time the appearance of the team improved significantly. The financial flexibility allowed the replacement of the \u201cmultinational\u201d uniforms with authentic ones. The team was subsidized by the Municipality with 500 drachmas a year, which was equivalent to two golden pounds. With this money, from the collections of the carols and from small contributions from the scouts, the group bought a banner, a trumpet and three drums, it also had the mentioned tents. The team acquired \u201cPack of wolves\u201d and was promoted to a group with group leader Vasos Hatzimihalis, leader Nick Ioannidis, vice- leaders Theodosis Manolakis and George Orfanos and Akela (Pack of wolves\u2019 leader) Manolis Cassotis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Parades<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most common scouting activity was participation in the March 25 and October 28 national holidays parades. From the morning we paraded on the main street from the Administration building to the port, to the sound of trumpets and drums, singing \u2013 like the ancient Tyrtaios \u2013 fiery patriotic songs. Drummers at this time were Vasos Kavouklis, Flurios Aspromatis, Pantelis Avlonitis and Charalambos Kyriakou Efstathiou. The trumpeter was Hercules Papadopoulos and later Elias Lathourakis. The flag bearer was Nick Ioannidis and later Manolis Cassotis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the standard eulogy, the parade in front of the officials took place in the Administration building square in front of the Hero\u2019s Monument, followed by the laying of wreaths. While the other organizations demanded to march first, we asked to march last to leave the last impressions. On behalf of the scouts, the wreath was laid by the announcer George Orfanos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fire displays<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the night of every national holiday, we did fire displays. We split into two groups, each group had a tin of ash and half tin of kerosene. One group would go up to the Acropolis, mix the ashes with the kerosene and make big balls with which we would form a big \u201cOHI\u201d (NO) or \u201c25\u201d, on the west face of the Acropolis. When it got dark, we lit them, and our creation could be seen from all the neighborhoods. The second group, in a boat, went to Despotic Island and in the same way illuminated the entire southern side of the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Religious ceremonies<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good Friday was the most overwhelming scouting event. After the \u201cApokathilosi\u201d (The descent of the body of Jesus, from the Cross), came the turn of the sea scouts who made up the honor guard of the Epitaph. Four scouts, one at each corner of the epitaph, stood guard. That they were aware of the seriousness and sanctity of the moments was seen by the way they were guarding, standing perfectly still, speechless and serious, with the poles \u201cunder arms\u201d, until they came to replace them. Pilgrims came to worship, kiss the holy body, and pass three times under the epitaph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Late in the evening, after the eulogies, the procession of the Epitaph was carried out from the church to the Administration building, and from the upper road to the cemetery for the memorial prayer and return to the church. Four scouts carried the Epitaph on their shoulders, while the rest of the Group in two parallel lines marched with a mournful step beside the Epitaph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the Feast of Epiphany, after the liturgy, the scouts formed two parallel lines around the Despot, the priests, the cantors, the officials and the congregation and accompanied the Cross down to the harbor for the established ceremony of \u201cthrowing the cross into the sea\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Paramedics<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After WWII there was the threat of a third world war, and all countries were taking protective measures. The prefect of Karpathos Napoleon Xanthoulis assigned to the director of the Karpathos Health Center, Doctor George M. Georgiou, the training of the scouts in providing first aid and the organization of a group of wounded bearers, as part of the air defense system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sailing boat<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When in 1953 Vasos Hatzimichalis was drafted, the leadership of the group was entrusted to Nick Ioannidis, George Orfanos and Manolis Cassotis with the teacher Tassos Sotiropoulos as local rector. At the same time, the scouts acquired a sailing boat, donated by the Nautical Club of Rhodes, which was handled with great skill by Nick Ioannidis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the following years, George Orfanos and Manolis Cassotis went to Athens for studies and later to America.
