In the beginning, the excursions were made at short distances on foot, such as in Kouri and Ardani, and the most numerous by boat to \u201cXetripiti\u201d (passing through) cave and Kamarouka (big cave) in Vronti, to the cave with the stalactites in Kantilia, and to Kyra Panagia of Kato (lower) Mertona. We also went, with the trucks of the time, to the lower villages of the island where there were roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pack was now ready for the big start, September 8<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;approaching, which was celebrated by Panagia Vrysiani in Mesochori. In the courtyard of Saint George, we were hosted by the Spoitans.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On the morning of September 7, 1949, the eve of the holiday, we left Pigadia in the truck of Micheal Makris, each taking with him a blanket and some food for the road and for later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pack consisted of the pack leader Nick Nicolaidis, the squad leaders Vasos Hatzimihalis, Nick Ioannidis and George Orfanos and the scouts Manolis Cassotis, Dino H. Lambros, Micheal Manolios, Pantelis Avlonitis, Micheal Sakellakis, Flurios Aspromatis, Vasos Kavouklis, Anastasius Maloftis, Micheal Hatzigeorgiou, Anthony Hatzimihalis, Elias Matsakis and John Zavolas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The truck left us in Kouroupi at the end of Volada, right across from the chapel of Saint Konstantine. From there we had to take the path, which none of us knew, to Mesochori, a 20-kilometer distance. Fortunately, we found a woman who was working on her fields and after treating us with pears, she showed us the path to Mesochori. (At first the woman thought we were from Rhodes, because she was seeing scouts for the first time).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>From Kakoperatis to Misathes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a long walk we reached \u201cKakoperatis\u201d (difficult pass), a steep cliff 200 meters long and 100 meters high, through which a narrow path less than a meter wide passed. We walked carefully and \u2013 as much as possible \u2013 closer to the rock. (It was said that no one passed Kakoperatis riding an animal). Continuing, we reached Misathes, a beautiful forest with impressive towering pines, which caused Vasos Kavouklis to remark: \u201cEverything needed for boat masts\u201d. In the forest next to the path was an abandoned forest guard house from the time of the Italians. We stopped there for a while, to eat and rest, because it was past noon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fog<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coming out of the forest, we continued following a path that went uphill, but after a while it disappeared into a ravine full of big and small stones. Unfortunately for us, a thick fog fell at that time preventing us from seeing 50 meters further. (As we later learned, the path we followed was not going to Mesochori but up to Lastos, the highest mountain of Karpathos). At a short distance we saw a stable and proceeded towards it, hoping to find someone to give us directions. We were disappointed when we got close and found ourselves in front of a huge rock that looked like a stable from a distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the meantime, the fog thickened, two or three started crying and we had to turn back to the point where the path went uphill. When we regrouped and counted, we found that Michael Hatzigeorgiou was missing. We looked for him and finally Michael Sakellakis found him in a ravine. The leader congratulated Sakellakis and honored him by giving him the first aid ribbon to wear on his sleeve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the meeting that followed, two opinions prevailed: We should go back to the forest guard house and spend the night there, or we should go down to the shore and from there we should follow the shoreline until we reach Mesochori. We were rescued from this difficult position by the observation of Vasos Hatzimichalis, who discerned on the slope of the opposite mountain the continuation of the path to Mesochori. (As we found out later, the path went through fields and was not easily discernible).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We got back on the right path and continued. We went a little further and recognized the beach of Lefkos. (As we had seen in photos, of course). Despite all our fatigue, the thought that we were approaching the village put \u201cwings on our feet\u201d. We walked another hour, but Mesochori was nowhere to be seen. We were in a forest just above the village, but as it was stuck to the slope, we couldn\u2019t see it. But the beach of Saint Irini, north of the village, was familiar from photographs. The leader sent two groups of scouts and soon we heard Sakellakis voice who was the first to see the village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;In<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Mesochori<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At sunset we entered the village and ended up at the Gendarmerie Station, where they welcomed us with relief, because had called them from Pigadia, who knew that we had left in the morning, and suspected that something serious had happened to us. They gave us two rooms on the second floor, where we arranged our things and spread the blankets on the concrete floor to sleep. In the meantime, we cooked \u2013 according to squads \u2013 something simple. In Vasos Hatzimihalis\u2019s squad, to which I belonged, Michael Hatzigeorgiou was the cook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to squads, the lookouts were also set, with the first lookout assigned to Hatzimichalis squad, and I took the first lookout from 8-10 in the evening. It was late summer; everyone was awake, and time passed without realizing it. To the next guards the time seemed endless. For the time to pass, every five minutes the guard turned the clock forward 15 minutes. Until dawn, the clock had advanced for the next day\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The feast<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the church service, when we went in the morning, were many pilgrims from the other villages and Kasians, who came by boat from Kasos. We helped serve the food and watched the feast and the dance that followed. There was an itinerant photographer who took a picture of the first scout pack of Karpathos. When we returned to the Gendarmerie building many Mesohoritans brought us baskets full of fruit and other gifts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next day we went a little outside the village to practice detection. The leading scout made its way through the well-tended gardens, with trees laden with fruit. It seems that of all of us, Flurios ate the most fruit, since in the evening he got a stomachache that upset us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next morning, September 10, we started our way back. No one wanted to hear about hiking. They preferred \u2013 as they said \u2013 to go to Pigadia \u201cby sea\u201d even\u2026 swimming, but there was no way. After an hour\u2019s hiking from Mesochori we arrived at Spoa. We stopped in the courtyard of Saint George church, where the Spoitans honored us with their ancestral hospitality.
