Dodecanese Toponyms in America<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In North, South and Central America and on Caribbean islands there are 306 cities, towns, villages and localities with Greek names. Most, 285, are in the United States, where one of the states has a Greek name. The remaining 18 cities are in seven other countries. In Brazil, apart from four cities with Greek names and the Parnassos National Park, a gift of the Kastelorizian Savvas Nickolas Savvas, there are 118 other cities that have the word \u201cpolis\u201d as the second part of their name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So are 11 cities in the US and one in Uruguay. Most of these names are related to ancient Greece and were given by admirers of the ancient Greek culture. Certain names such as Alexander and Alexandria (30 times), Troy (22), Rhodes (22), Athens (20), Arcadia (16), Sparta (14) and Archimedes\u2019 Eureka-Eureka (18) are particularly popular. Of all the states, cities, towns, villages and toponyms listed below have Dodecanese names or are associated with the Dodecanese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rhode Island<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1524 the Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazano arrived with his ship in what is now New York Harbor and continued east, following the southern shore of Long Island. When he reached its eastern end, he turned north until he met another island. In his report to King Francis I of France he mentioned that this island resembled Rhodes. In 1582, in a book entitled \u201cVarious Voyages\u201d, written by the Englishman Richard Hackloyd (also listed as Hakluyt), referring to Verrazano\u2019s visit, he wrote that the island reminded Verrazano of Rhodes of the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several years later, the English, under pastor Roger Williams, colonized the island, which was also claimed by the Dutch under a different name. To counter the Dutch claims, Williams asked the General Court of England to recognize the island as Rhodes. In 1663, King Charles II of England adopted this name, when he issued the charter for the colony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later the same name was extended to the entire colony on the American continent. In 1776 with the American Revolution of Independence, the colony of Rhode Island became one of the 13 original US states. Today, Rhode Island has a population of 1,100,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rhodes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are 22 small towns, villages and localities in USA, and two in Canada, named Rhodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the state of Alabama<\/strong> are the villages of Rhodes and Rhodes Ville or Rhodes Mill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the state of California<\/strong> is the village of Rhodes with 750 inhabitants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among Florida\u2019s<\/strong> Key West Islands is the Old Rhodes Key island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the state of Illinois<\/strong> is the village of Rhodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the state of Indiana<\/strong> in Clinton Township, Vermillion County is the village of Rhodes founded in 1903 by miners, probably Rhodians who worked in the area\u2019s coal mines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the state of Michigan <\/strong>is Cassopolis with 1,700 inhabitants. Its name comes from the name of Cass County, of which it is the capital. The origin of the name Cass County has not been ascertained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patmos<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the southwestern edge of the state of Arkansas<\/strong> in Hempstead County, on a vast plain, is a village of 64 inhabitants, which for religious reasons was named Patmos to connect its name with the island of the Apocalypse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the state of Mississippi<\/strong> in Sharkey County is the village of Patmos, population 264.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cos<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the southern end of the state of Connecticut and 50 miles from New York City, is the town of Cos Cob, population 6,770.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tarpon Springs FL \u2013 Greek City<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first Dodecanese sponge divers arrived in Bahamas around 1890 and from there to Tarpon Springs. The first known Dodecanese to arrive at Tarpon Springs, in 1896, was Captain Nicholas Giannoukas from Chalki. The group settlement of the Dodecanese sponge divers from Kalymnos, Symi and Halki began in 1905. Soon Tarpon Springs developed into a small town that took a Greek character and as an extension of the Dodecanese to the New World and became known as the Greek City among Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even today, Tarpon Springs maintains its Dodecanese character, since several of the mayors and other officials of Tarpon Springs are of Dodecanese descent, such as former Florida congressman Michalis Bilirakis, and now his son Kostas Bilirakis. Besides the descendants of the Dodecanese sponger divers, other Dodecanese, from the northern states, move to Tarpon Springs when they retire. Tarpon Springs has a population of 26,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicholson town WV<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the pioneer Dodecanese immigrants to America was the Karpathian Hatzimanolis Nicholas Alexiadis who settled in Wheeling WV, and before coming to America went to Aidini in Asia Minor and Sudan and gained business experience. Although he settled in a coal-bearing region he did not work in coal mines but engaged in business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that time, near each coal mine, the company that operated it built houses that were rented to the workers, and stores where they shopped on credit. But there was great exploitation at the expense of the miners because the company had a monopoly. Near a coal mine, where several \u039aarpathians and other Greeks worked, Hatzimanolis built a shop and some houses. It gained a large clientele because the prices and rents were more favorable to the miners. Over time he built other houses, and a small settlement was formed, where a few hundred miners lived, and among the Greeks of the area it became known as Hatzimanolis\u2019 village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Hatzimanolis asked the State to recognize the village, he requested to be called Nicholson town. Hatzimanolis had changed his surname from Alexiadis to Nicholas, which was his patronymic, to avoid the racial discrimination of the Anglo-Saxons at the against the new immigrants. With the decline of the coal mines Nicholson town declined and was abandoned. Only its name remained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Florianopolis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Six hundred miles south of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and very close to the South American Continent, is Santa Catarina Island with its capital at Florianopolis, a city of 400,000 inhabitants, the capital of the state of Santa Catarina with a population of over 5,000,000. Florianopolis, known as New Kastelorizo, was founded in 1892 by Kastelorizian captain Savvas N. Savvas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Greece NY<\/strong> In the state of New York, on the southern shore of Lake Ontario, is the city of Greece, which took its name in 1822, in honor of the Greek Revolution of 1821. In 1997, when the city of Greece celebrated its 175th anniversary, it was twinned with Rhodes.
