Cassotis<\/em><\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this 3<sup>rd<\/sup>&nbsp;article we continue the recording of the Karpathian couplets related to foreignness and the Karpathians in America (all couplets that follow are in free translation).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Michael Anagnostopoulos<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michael Anagnostopoulos was born in Aperi and married in Volada. He was a melodious singer and an amazing lyricist, and a reveler, synonymous with eccentricity (as it is understood in Karpathos). He summed up in his couplets and praised the beauties of his place, condensing, at the same time, in them his feelings about love and friendship, which he especially honored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His couplets were permeated with intense and deep emotion, which he emphasized with a ritualistic movement of his raised hand and closed eyes. At weddings, where he was in demand, he graced the couple with modest compliments (he had a sense of moderation and did not slip into excesses), compliments that were in keeping with our traditional values and perceptions of that time. He adored Karpathos, its plains, its mountains, its seas and its people, who when the conditions sent them abroad, he complained with the following couplets:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 \u201cOh my God, why did you make the Earth so big,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and put land on one side and sea on the other\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 \u201cAnd you brought ships into the sea to \u201carmenize\u201d (sail)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>to take our friends and set us apart\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fate sent him abroad (America) where he once sang about the unexpected but also inevitable in human life:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 \u201cI was who brought home my friends from stranger places,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>but these stranger places got jealous and took me too\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He died in America. His body was delivered to the beloved land: Karpathos, the land he loved and sang like few others. The unforgettable \u201cHypsilos\u201d (His nickname: Tall man)!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vangelis<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>Gergatsoulis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vangelis Gergatsoulis was one of the well-known lyre players and singers of Karpathos. He did not go to America, but he was in demand among the Karpathians who came from America to Karpathos, to spend their holidays and have fun.
