South-Eastern edge of the Aegean is Karpathos, and as it travels alone in the Karpathian Sea, it has kept many of its customs that go back centuries. One of these customs is related to the naming of children. The first son takes the name of his paternal grandfather and the first daughter the name of her maternal grandmother. The grandfather who hears his grandson\u2019s name for the first time ensures his eternity, and if he happens to die before his grandson is born who will take his name, those present at the birth say that the grandfather has risen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on this custom many can find their genealogical roots going back two or three centuries.
