Dodecanese Churches and Clergy in America<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One Sunday, at the church of Saint Barbara in New York after the Divine Liturgy in the hall of the church where coffee was served, I happened to sit at the same table with the church cantor. His wife who was sitting across from me was wearing a gold cross that impressed me and I said to her: \u201cMrs. Marika, your cross is very beautiful\u201d, to get the answer: \u201cWhat is left of the Asia Minor Catastrophe\u201d, and then she explained that when her mother put her on a boat in the port of Smyrna to leave with the only dress she was wearing, she hung the cross around her neck to protect her wherever she went.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first Greek immigrants coming to America, in addition to their national consciousness and their language, brought with them their faith. One of the first immigrants\u2019 efforts was to build churches and bring Greek clergy, and in them to save and galvanize these three components of their identity and to be transmitted to the next generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The church was the strongest link with the homeland left behind. Religious events were familiar held in their language. The churches were also social centers where they met people from their place of origin, to speak in their language, to celebrate common customs, and to reminisce their village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the beginning, in the cities where there were significant Greek communities, the immigrants founded churches where services, celebrations and other rites were held every Sunday. From these cities some priests went to the smaller Greek communities to perform weddings, baptisms, funerals, and even services in the halls of restaurants and cafes, and as Zoe Stamataki recounts: \u201cBecause there was no Greek church in Richland WV, where we lived, my mother took us every Sunday to Ohio, where there was a small Greek church. We walked three miles over a bridge to get to the other side of the river.<\/em>\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When several immigrant families gathered in a community, the most active formed an association, found members and secured donations and promises. This core was the religious community which was trying to build a church and find a priest. Many times, one of its members proposed as priest a relative or friend of his from his village or from another village in Greece, introduced to him by a friend or acquaintance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The associations were recognized by the state and governed as religious organizations. The Association\u2019s Council hired and fired priests and helpers, and later teachers. The situation changed with the creation of the Archdiocese, which gave greater power to the clergy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Discord<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The immigrants, coming to America, \u201ccarried\u201d with them their political beliefs and party strife divided into Royalists and Venizelists. Political discord entered the churches as well. In Brooklyn, New York, the Royal Church of St. Constantine was founded in honor of King Constantine and in Manhattan the Venizelist Church of St. Eleftherios in honor of Eleftherios Venizelos. On May 2, 1918, when Saint Constantine fired its Venizelist priest, Saint Eleftherios hired him the same day. The Dodecanese, who were focused on the liberation of their islands, stayed away from these controversies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Religious holydays<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participation in religious festivals was an important social outlet. Women were given the opportunity to attend church, while men preferred the daily wage. Name day celebrations offered another opportunity for social contact. Relatives and friends visited the celebrants to wish them well and share the joy of their celebration, enjoying the food, dances and songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christmas was the main religious holiday, during which wishes were exchanged, carols were sung in homes, and in churches the procession of the Divine birth. On the contrary, the new year, with the feast of Saint Basil, was offered for the exchange of gifts, entertainment and the cutting of the Vasilopita. The children visited houses and cafes singing \u201cSanta Claus\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Easter, the most important holiday of Greek Orthodoxy, began on Palm Sunday with the palms and the established liturgy. Many people attended the religious events of Holy Week culminating on Good Friday when the churches were full, and it was the only day of the year when everyone went to church. Greek enterprises participated in the Divine mourning, \u201cdecorated\u201d in black and purple. The procession of the Epitaph took place around the church and in the streets. The priest, surrounded by chanters, incensed, and sprinkled the pilgrims who took part in the procession holding lighted candles. The midnight of Holy Saturday to Sunday was the climax of the celebration with the Resurrection, \u201cChrist is Risen\u201d and sparklers. People returned to their homes with the Holy light, to eat \u201cpatsa\u201d (tripe), and the next day the stuffed lamb, cakes and red eggs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The schools<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When several families gathered in a district, the Community undertook to teach Greek to the new generation with the priest, usually, as the teacher. Children of various ages gathered in the basement of the church. Classes started after public school, late afternoon until early evening. At night the same hall was turned into a cafe. The children were trying to learn the Greek language, embrace the values of our culture, learn and love our traditions and customs, and finally form a solid national consciousness and identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for the churches, they also changed following the economic conditions that occurred among the immigrants: Religious gatherings in warehouses and halls were a thing of the past, now the congregation took place in beautiful churches that were built in the districts and suburbs where the descendants of the immigrants moved. At the same time, decent classrooms were built and the salaries of teachers with scientific and pedagogical competence were covered. Until then the priests and college students covered the Greek education, and to the best of their ability offered a valuable service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each Community is an island of Orthodoxy within the multiracial and multireligious mosaic of America. In every community there are organizations that take care of children, young people, the elderly, the poor and the afflicted. It operates a catechetical and Greek evening school and, in some communities, daily Elementary, Middle and High School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Dodecanese<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the beginning the Dodecanese participated in the development and progress of the Greek Orthodox Church in America. Holy Trinity is the first Greek Orthodox church in America, founded in 1864 in New Orleans. In this ecclesiastical community, the Karpathian John Livadiotis, who arrived in New Orleans in 1874, served as president. Afterwards, many Dodecanese helped financially in the building of Greek Orthodox churches and in the organization and management of the communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1907, with the great contribution of Kalymnians, Symians and Chalkians, the church of Saint Nicholas was built in Tarpon Springs FL, and later in the same town they built the chapel of Taxiarches Michael. Rhodians and Karpathians built the All-Saints\u2019 Church in Canonsburg PA, and Karpathians built the St. Sophia\u2019s Church in Winter Haven FL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most Greeks of Campbell OH were Kalymnians and Symians who attended church in nearby Youngstown commuting going by bus. On Easter night, when the bus returned to Campbell it looked like an illuminated ship; the faithful kept their candles lit to take home the Holy Light. Later they built the church of Archangel Michael in Campbell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many churches in New York and New Jersey had and have a significant Dodecanese presence such as St Eleutherius in Manhattan, St. Demetrius in Astoria, St. Demetrius in Union NJ, St. George in Clifton NJ, and St. Athanasius in Paramus NJ. On the campus of the State University of Connecticut in Storrs, Mansfield CN, the Rhodian association \u201cPaideia\u201d built the Chapel of the Three Hierarchs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, many Dodecanesians taught, and others in many ways helped in the creation and maintenance of Greek schools. The contribution of the Nisyrians, the late Nick Andriotis and Demosthenes Triantaphyllou, for the creation of the Gymnasium and Lyceum of Saint Dimitrius in Astoria was significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the United States and in other American countries the Dodecanese built churches: the Kastelorizians built Saint Nicholas in Brazil, the Symians Panormitis in Argentina, which is the first Greek Orthodox in South America, and the Kalymnians the Annunciation in the Bahamas where priest Theofanis Kolyvas of Kalymnian origin served for many years. Also significant is the contribution of the Dodecanese to the churches of Canada where the Protopresbyter Konstantine Chalkias from Karpathos served for many years in the church of the Holy Trinity in Montreal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clergy<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are dozens of Dodecanese clergy in America who have served and are serving the Greek Orthodox Church. In the first place are the former Archbishop of America Spyridon of Rhodian origin, the former Metropolitan of New Jersey of Kalymnian origin Evangelos Kourounis and the current Metropolitan of New Jersey of Rhodian origin Apostolos Koufalakis. Among the first Dodecanese priests is Theophilos Karafylis from Kalymnos who for decades served at the church of Saint Nicholas in Tarpon Springs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
