Among them, about 150 years ago, one of the most famous was Nicholas Balamos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Balamos was from Olympos, from where he went to Halki and got a job in sponge diving, as diver with diving suit. On Sundays and holidays, and sometimes in the evenings after the \u201cbuto\u201d (diving), he entertained them with improvised couplets and his lyre. But on a dive off the coast of Libya he was \u201cstruck\u201d by the \u201csponge divers\u2019 disease\u201d (a disease that affected the nervous system of the lower limbs and you can hardly walk).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To survive, Balamos did whatever odd jobs he could and, when he got the chance, with the celebrators\u2019 tips who were after his greatly sought musical and poetic talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once, Balamos was invited to the festival of a village\u2019s patron saint, where he arrived the day before. But on the way to the village, he tore the leather of one of his shoes and stopped at the village shoemaker to fix it, and as soon as the shoe was sewn Balamos sang an appropriate couplet to express his thanks. But the shoemaker insisted that he should also give him a \u201cgrosi\u201d (Turkish coin) for his work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next day after the Divine Liturgy the congregation gathered in the church yard for the festival. In the middle of the courtyard on a large table was seating Balamos with the other instrumentalists, and around them were seating the people on long wooded stools. On the \u201cpezouli\u201d (special stone build seating place) were seating the \u201cfardaskelaes\u201d and among them the shoemaker. (\u201cFardaskelaes\u201d were named those who were wearing breeches with wider fabric around their legs to show their economic prosperity).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the established ritual, before the feast began, Balamos had to go around the \u201cfardaskelaes\u201d, and with an improvised couplet praise each one, responding with a small tip. When came shoemaker\u2019s turn, Balamos remembered the incident with his shoe, and playing his lyre he sang (all couplets in free translation).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>You sewed up my shoe, which was torn,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>and asked to get paid, like a penniless person.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shoemaker had no choice, he took out his \u201csakoulaki\u201d (small fabric bag the \u201cfardaskelaes\u201d wore under their belt and kept their coins) to give him a coin to shut him up. But Balamos did not give up and continued:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Now that I\u2019ve got you, and you\u2019ve opened the bag,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I\u2019ll take everything, cheap Beelzebub.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Out of his anger and without thinking, the shoemaker threw the bag of coins at Balamos\u2019 head.
