class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With this 8<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;publication we continue with Karpathian couplets that the passage of time does not erase and are kept alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And if I don\u2019t wake up \u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two or three centuries ago, a traveler passing through Karpathos met a Karpathian who worked day and night to make ends meet, and when he asked him how he was doing with his work, he replied: \u201cI am doing well, we support ourselves, I pay my debts and lend also\u201d. With the \u201cI pay my debts\u201d, he meant that he supports and care of his old parents, and with the I lend, that he cared for his children who would care for their parents in their old age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the Karpathian custom of the time, the first son or daughter, who also received the property of their parents, had the obligation to take care of them in their old age. Next to the family house was a smaller house called \u201cgerontomiri\u201d, where the old parents lived under the protection and care of their children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The situation changed when the Karpathians began to migrate, and especially going to America where they lived for many years. Every month they sent the check for the decent maintenance of their parents, but for their daily and other needs they had to take care of themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once, Manolis Diakos from Mesochori became seriously ill, and at the hospital in Rhodes where his wife took him the doctors decided that he needed to be operated, but he did not want to go into the operating room unless his firstborn son came from America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As soon as Nick Diakos found out, he gave up his business and job in America and arrived in Rhodes and entering his father\u2019s room he shook his hand trying to hold back his tears. The father\u2019s face shone with joy, but his eyes were full of complaint.
