Cassotis<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this 3<sup>rd<\/sup>&nbsp;article, we continue the recording of escapes from the Italian-occupied Dodecanese during the WWII, as recorded by Manolis Makris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Run to be saved!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Immediately after the departure of the second allied spy mission, the Germans found out that there were collaborators in Karpathos, especially in Saria from where the mission left. The Germans devised a plan to dismantle and capture the Allies\u2019 collaborators in Karpathos. In May 1944, a German Counterintelligence boat presented itself in the Olympus area as Allies and attempted to contact the spies\u2019 collaborators. The Germans raised the suspicions of Nikias N. Hartofylakas, Manolis V. Karellas and his son Vassilis, and Manolis Orfanos who had collaborated with the Allies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/a173-escape3-1-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-60789\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u0391\u03c0\u03cc \u03c4\u03bf \u03a0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03c3\u03c0\u03cc\u03c1\u03b9 \u03be\u03b5\u03ba\u03af\u03bd\u03b7\u03c3\u03b5 \u03b7 \u03b2\u03ac\u03c1\u03ba\u03b1 \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2 \u03b4\u03c1\u03b1\u03c0\u03ad\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2, \u03c3\u03c4\u03b1\u03bc\u03ac\u03c4\u03b7\u03c3\u03b5 \u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u0391\u03bd\u03c4\u03af\u03c4\u03b7\u03bb\u03bf \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9 \u03b1\u03c0\u2019 \u03b5\u03ba\u03b5\u03af \u03ad\u03c6\u03c4\u03b1\u03c3\u03b5 \u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd \u039a\u03ac\u03b2\u03bf \u039a\u03c1\u03b9\u03cc. The boat with the fugitives started from Paraspori, stopped at Antitilos and from there arrived at Cape Krio.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Nikias explained the situation to captain Stelios Farmakidis, who advised him that everyone should leave immediately to save themselves and the others who were involved in the case. He gave them a loaf of bread and a tin of water and instructed them to start from Paraspori and stop at the islet Antitilo of Tilos and from there, when they found the right opportunity, to cross to the opposite coast of Asia Minor. Stelios also advised Nikias to take a second sail with them because they would be crossing the open sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the help of Eudoxia, an Aperitissa who lived with the Brigadiere of Finanza, they got permission to go to Saria. For her intercession, Eudoxia asked that five kilos of cheese and a \u00abriffi\u00bb (baby goat) be brought back to her. Nikias Hartofylakas with Vassilis Karellas and his brother Michalis, and Manolis Orfanos started from Diafani. They stopped in Vananda where Nikia\u2019s family lived to say goodbye, he didn\u2019t say anything to them, but his eldest son Nikolis understood something and told his mother. Great emotion and distress, Nikias, forty years old at the time, left his wife with seven children and did not know if he would see them again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They went to Palatia, where they found Manolis Karellas and explained the situation. Difficult to decide, to give up his family and his job and leave. He understood that there was no other option and made the decision: \u201cLet\u2019s go\u201d. He also left behind wife and children; his son Constantine was still a baby. He took his son Vasilis with him and left his 17-year-old son Michalis behind to take on the family responsibilities, at this time children were becoming men overnight. From Palatia they went to Alimunda, but did not dare to start, they were afraid that a German boat would pass by and see them. They went to Paraspori and waited for nightfall, they had taken with them clothes, water, bread and whatever other food was available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Made their Cross \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At nightfall they made their cross and started from Paraspori. At first, they went with the oars, and as soon as they opened to the sea they put on the sail and set off for Antitilo. They had two sails, when was strong wind, they put up the small and when the wind fell, they put up the big. The weather was bonanza, and they rowed all night. At dawn they were still 6-7 miles from Antitilo, they had to hurry in case any German boat or plane passed by and saw them. They set the mainsail and rowed with the four oars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At sunrise on May 7, 1944, they got to Antitilo, as Stelios told them. They intended to sink the rowboat. (Sinking the rowboat was a common tactic of the Dodecanese who were involved in espionage or wanted to escape, with the following procedure: Before daybreak, they dismantled the rowboat and removed all the gear and supplies, bring them a few meters from the shore and take out the rowboat\u2019s cap. They would let the boat fill with sea, put some stones in it and let it sink to a depth of 4-5 meters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then they would go ashore, hide in the bushes or behind rocks and wait for the day to pass. Many times, patrol boats would pass beside or above the rowboat without noticing it. After nightfall, they will dive, take out the stones for the rowboat to come up. Then, they will put back the cap, empty the sea with a tin, reload their supplies and continue the journey).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But luckily for them a spacious cave with deep water was found in their bow. They got in and anchored the boat. Luck helped them again; the cave had an exit that took them out onto the island. It was about eight o\u2019clock in the morning of May 7, 1944, when they fixed the boat and went ashore. For more safety, they hid in the bushes, behind large rocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortly after, a German patrol boar passed 100 meters from them, luckily it didn\u2019t notice the boat in the cave. Just in case, they were also prepared, they had armed a dozen dynamites, and they were ready to throw the improvised torpedo into the patrol boat and \u201cwhatever will be done, let it be done\u201d, anyway they were lost. The weather was clear and from Antitilo they could see to the north the peninsula of Knidos with Cape Krios, to the north-east Symi which was still held by the Germans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 9 o\u2019clock in the evening, when night had fallen, they took the boat out of the cave and set off for Turkey. The weather was blowing favorably, and they put up the mainsail, expecting to cross the sea and reach their destination before daybreak. Suddenly they were interrupted, two searchlights from Symi were searching the surrounding area, luckily, they didn\u2019t see the rowboat and were saved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, they saw lights, they were close to Turkey but were afraid to make landfall and catch fire before dawn. It was around three in the morning when Nikias Hartofylakas and Manolis Karellas fell asleep and left the two young men to keep the boat close to land with the oars, because although it was calm there was a strong current. But just as they were tired and awake, sleep took them too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When they woke up, it was already daylight. The current had taken them across the ocean towards Kos. Before long they heard a hum, it was a German plane, it swooped down over the boat and fired a test shot. At the same time, they heard machine gun fire, an English plane coming from the Turkish side attacked the German plane. Soon two German and a second English plane arrive.
