Traditional Karpathian couplets \u2013 9th<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this 9th<\/sup> publication we continue with Karpathian couplets that the passage of time does not erase and are kept alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLove<\/strong> undefeated<\/strong> in<\/strong> battle<\/strong>\u201c.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the time of Homer and the abduction of Helen, traditional songs more than any other subject continue to deal with the invincible love as Sophocles calls it in Antigone: \u201cLove undefeated in battle\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Roumeli, the most famous and widespread folk song is Maria\u2019s Pentagiotissas: (all folk songs and couplets in free translation).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Salona lambs are slaughtered, and in Chrysos rams,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and on Maria\u2019s apron, young men.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the sailors searching East and West for a kiss sing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A caique from Chios,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

with its two little boats.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Went to Samos,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and started counting.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How much a kiss costs,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

in the West and the East.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The married woman\u2019s four,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

the widow\u2019s fourteen.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Single\u2019s woman is cheap,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

you can get it with a joke.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And those who did not get satisfactory answer went to Arabia:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will go to Arabia, to find an Arab,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

to ask him, how love is caught.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It starts from the eyes,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and descends to the lips.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And from the lips to the heart,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

where it takes root, and never comes out.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But at the same time, the parents were choosing the grooms their daughters would marry, without considering Sophocles\u2019 \u201cLove undefeated in battle\u201d, but according to old saying: \u201cMen\u2019s will, is not God\u2019s desire\u201d, as the traditional song states:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My mother beats me, my dear, it hurts,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

the man I will marry, is the one I love.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Come on, my dear mom, don\u2019t hit me, it hurts,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

the man I will marry, is the one I love.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To high you build the nest<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same took place in Karpathos, where the bridegroom was chosen according to his social and economic status. And when in a village love developed between a young woman and a young man of lower social and economic status, the fellow villagers who knew the strict customs of the time sang to him at a festival:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            You build the nest to high, and the branch will bend,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            the bird will fly away, and the pain will remain with you.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But he did not give up and responded:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            I built the nest too high, but I am tall, and I can reach it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            and the one I love; will be my mate.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
