Alexakis\u2019 grandson Alexis Anastasius Alexiadis (Photo Andy Alexiadis).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Alexis Nicholas Alexakis \u2013 The young Cretan who settled in Karpathos<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>By Manolis Cassotis<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most common surnames in Aperi of Karpathos is Alexiadis, and many from the same village with different surnames are related by blood to Alexis Alexakis. Also, with the help of DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid), more than 1500 blood descendants of Alexakis were identified in Karpathos, in the rest of Greece, and in other countries of the world, particularly America, where there are many Karpathian communities. We must go back two centuries to find out who Alexakis was and how he found himself in Karpathos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the Greek Revolution of 1821 broke out in Crete, Nicholas Alexakis took his followers and went out to the mountains to fight the Turks. He did heavy damage to the enemy, but he also suffered heavy losses. In a battle, Mehmed Ali\u2019s Turkalbanians from Egypt surrounded and killed him and his relatives, who were fighting with him, and decimated his clan. Only his \u201cprotopallikaro\u201d (best fighter), his brother Anastaros, and two or three other \u201cpallikaria\u201d (good fighters) were saved, and after many adventures they managed to reach Karpathos in a Kasian sailboat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the annihilation of Alexakis\u2019 family, his ten-year-old son Alexis survived, who, due to his age, did not follow his father to the mountains. He was hidden and protected by his relatives and in 1827, when the right opportunity occurred, they fled him to Karpathos near his uncle Anastaros. Later, with the help of his relatives, he sold what was saved from his father\u2019s property and bought large estates in Karpathos with the proceeds, becoming a \u201ckanakaris\u201d (large landowner).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1840, Alexakis married Zoe, John Pyliatis\u2019 daughter. We do not know more about John Pyliatis but researching the Aperi\u2019s tax records (Nicholas G. Kafetzidakis), recorded by Michael Hiotis, we see that in 1875 among the large landowners of Aperi are Alexakis and Nicholas John Pyliatis who lived in the district of Lori. Thus, we can assume that Nicholas and Zoe were siblings, children of John Pyliatis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/a175-Alexakis6-Small.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/a175-Alexakis6-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-61080\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u0397 \u03b5\u03b3\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd\u03ae \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u0391\u03bb\u03b5\u03be\u03ac\u03ba\u03b7 \u0392\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03ad\u03bb\u03b1 \u03a3\u03c4\u03b1\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03ba\u03b7 \u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u0391\u03bc\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03ba\u03ae. Alexakis\u2019 granddaughter Vangela Stamataki in America.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, through analysis of Zoe\u2019s DNA, we notice that there are several of her relatives mainly from Pyles, Othos and Volada and less from Spoa, Mesochori, Olympos, Arkasa and Menetes, which indicates that the surname Pyliatis has some relation to the village of Pyles. Zoe\u2019s mother was called Ernia after her own grandmother in accordance with Karpathian custom, and she was one of the great kanakares (landlords) of Aperi. The real estate that followed the hereditary succession of Ernia-Zoe-Ernia is in the area of ancient Poseidion where the Aperitans had their most important properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alexakis arrived in Karpathos at the time when the Aperitans had abandoned the fortified position \u201cKoraki\u201d and moved to the foot of the \u201cCastle,\u201d where the lower Aperi is located. The districts of Morou and Valandu had not yet developed. Alexakis was born and raised on the mountaintops of Crete, overlooking the Cretan and Libyan seas, and he got married and built his house on the mountainside where the neighborhood Lori is located. The ruins of this house were found a few meters below the church of Misosporitissa, known as the \u201ckatelema\u201d (ruined house) of \u201cZokla t\u2019Alexaki\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alexakis devoted his diligent efforts in cultivating his and his wife\u2019s estate. According to Alexakis\u2019 family tradition, he brought the olive trees to Karpathos. At the beginning, Alexakis encountered great difficulties because Lendis\u2019, a shepherd in the area, goats destroyed the young trees. Lendis did not pay attention to Alexakis\u2019 complaints and protests, who wanted to make olive fields out of pastures. Finally, indignant Alexakis brought a gun from Crete and started killing Lendis\u2019 goats when they approached his olive trees. Eventually, Alexakis olive trees won the battle, and the plain of Poseidion would become the largest olive grove of Karpathos, inspiring the extension of the practice to other villages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alexakis had four sons, Nicholas, John, Anastasis and Zorzis (George), and two daughters Irene and Stamatoula. Around 1880, Alexakis children began using the surname Alexiou or Alexiadis, but were better known as Nicholas the son of Alexakis, John the son of Alexakis, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nicholas, Alexakis\u2019 firstborn son, married Zoe Emanuel Matsakis\u2019 firstborn daughter, who was one of the great \u201ckanakara\u201d (large landowner) of Karpathos. Emanuel Matsakis, who had his origin from Mani, along with his father George Matsakis, took part in the Revolution of 1821, and in 1843 King Othon awarded him a diploma in recognition of his services for the liberation of Greece. Nicholas built the first olive mill in Karpathos, which used an iron press and millstones. Previously, olives were pounded and pressed on a wooden press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ernia, Alexakis\u2019 firstborn daughter, married Hatzimanolis Kapetanakis, a prominent Karpathian of the time. Ernia and her first child died in childbirth and later Kapetanakis married Hazikali, who was also one of the great \u201ckanakaras\u201d of Karpathos. According to the Karpathian inheritance custom of the time, Ernia\u2019s property was not taken by Kapetanakis, but returned to her mother and then to Stamatoula, Alexakis\u2019 second daughter [Stamatoula married the Mukhtari (mayor) of Aperi George Kafezidakis and after his death Manoli Lyristakis]. Aperi\u2019s district Lori, where Alexakis built his \u201cKingdom\u201d.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Alexakis\u2019 other children took spouses from Aperi\u2019s most prominent families, which shows that although Alexakis was a stranger, he was highly respected by the conservative society of Karpathos. His second son John married Kalitsa Antimisiari, who was known as \u201cKalitsa of Kukia\u201d, because her father was a merchant importing legumes from Asia Minor (After the death of Kalitsa, John married Fotini of Elias). Anastasis married Kalitsa Gergatsouli and Zorzis (George), the youngest son, married Sofia Pantelis. Zorzis lived to see so many nieces\/nephews, double-nieces\/nephews and triple-nieces\/nephews that he was known in Aperi as \u201co Kalas (great-great uncle) Zorzis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His will, written on November 26, 1879, is his oldest surviving document. It indicates that he had acquired large real estate properties. Although when his will was written he had already endowed his first two sons, 16 estates remained in his will. Also, the name of Alexakis is mentioned in the tax records of Aperi of 1878, when he and his wife had already endowed most of their children. (In the same tax records, his son Nicholas is mentioned as the second largest taxpayer of Aperi, an indication of the large amount of real estate he inherited from his father, as well as his wife\u2019s real estate). Alexakis died around 1890, although some oral information has him alive until 1897. Until his death, he did not part wearing his Cretan traditional costume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the six children, Alexakis had 24 grandchildren: Hazalexis N. Alexiadis, Ernia N. Alexiadi-Vergi, Vangela N. Alexiadi-Stamataki, Hazimanolis N. Alexiadis, Hazigiorgis N. Alexiadis, Alexis J. Alexiadis, Vangeloula J. Alexiadi-Katrou, Zoe J. Alexiadi-Bertou, George J. Alexiadis, Nicholas J. Alexiadis, Maria J. Alexiadi-Halkia, Elias J. Alexiadis, Nicholas Kafezidakis, Alexis Kafezidakis, Zoe (Hazinoula) Lyristaki-Sarri, Nikitas Lyristakis , Alexis A. Alexiadis, Nicholas A. Alexiadis, Marigo A. Alexiadi-Kalafata, Zoe A. Alexiadis, Ernia A. Alexiadi-Kanari, Alexis Z. Alexiadis, Menelaos Z. Alexiadis, Elpida Z. Alexiadi- Antimisiari.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the Karpathian pioneers who immigrated to America are Alexakis\u2019 sons Anastassis and Zorzis, 15 grandsons and 2 granddaughters.
