The holder of the arc commanded the sea approaches to the Aegean, the Dardanelles, the Black Sea, the southern coast of Russia and the oil fields of Romania. It also controlled the shipping lines to the Eastern Mediterranean and the Suez Canal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Italy, which controlled the eastern part of the strategic arc, attached particular importance to the strategic value of the Karpathos, and proceeded to build the airport in Afiarti which controlled the \u201cStrait of Kasos\u201d, the channel between Crete and Kasos. In 1939, when the war started, the Italians, together with the opening of the road to Afiarti, started the construction of the airport empoying hundreds of local workers from all the villages of Karpathos, paying cheap wages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We convey the memories of Minas Papakostas who worked as a laborer for three years in the construction of the airport:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cAs soon as the Italians started the work to open the road and build the airport in Afiarti, they hired hundreds of workers from all over Karpathos. The daily wage was eight lire for the laborers and ten to twelve for the craftsmen, while the Italian foremen made five times as much. Every Monday, before dawn we started from Othos loaded with our basic food supplies for the whole week. Once we arrived, we would leave our things in the stables and go to work. On Saturday afternoon they let us go two hours earlier to return to Othos. On weekdays, as soon as we finished work, we went back to the stables to cook what we had for the evening and take with us to work the next day.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThe food was measured, a few pulses with a little oil and a slice of bread. The Italians didn\u2019t give us food, only sometimes we exchanged fruits and vegetables for spaghetti. Later when the German planes came (he means in the Battle of Crete) the situation was better. The Germans cooked so that the aviators who went to bomb would find food when they come back, but many times not all the planes returned, and the leftover food was given to the workers. That\u2019s why when we saw the German planes leaving, we counted them and prayered not to turn back, so that there would be more food for us.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cOur job was to dig and shovel dirt all day. The Italians set up railroad tracks on which we rolled small open-top wagons. We would fill the wagon and then slowly roll it on the tracks, if it was downhill, we would put a brake made of sticks. There were also some compressors to break the stones, these were worked by Vassos Daskalakis with other Menediates. With the stones and earth, we filled the puddles and pits.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cIf someone didn\u2019t go to work, the Italians fined him, two weeks of unpaid work. But there was an Italian foreman, Paganino he was called, who was good to us. He, assisted by Sophocles Economides, wrote down the daily wages that the workers worked. Many times, they let us go on Friday instead of Saturday, but they wrote that we worked on Saturday. When we returned on Monday, we brought them wine and seasonal fruit to thank them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/a183-Afiarti-5-Small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/a183-Afiarti-5-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-62093\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cAnother Italian foreman, Chentelini, was hard on us. In the first days when Italy attacked Greece, he told Michael Lagonikos that in a few days they would drink coffee in Athens. After a few days, Chentelini stopped talking about the Greeks, but Lagonikos, pretending not to know anything, asked him: \u2018When are we going to Athens for coffee, to see my relatives I have there\u2019. Angry, Chentelini answered him: \u2018The Greeks are skunks\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThe Italians had guards at the airport entrance and wouldn\u2019t let anyone in without permission. But they left the back of the airport unguarded where they stored the gasoline for the planes. We took a bottle of water with us to drink at work, and when we got the chance, we filled it with gasoline. We would make a pile of wood, supposedly to cook, and in the middle of the pile we would hide the bottle. Other times inside the pile we hid some axes or other tools. In the same way we transported the gasoline and the tools to Othos, where we exchanged them. Gasoline was used by some cars that existed, and to light the lamps instead of kerosine that did not exist.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It took three years (1939-42) to finish the airport and when it was finished it was a huge leveled plain, \u201ccampo\u201d the Italians called it, without runways. Planes that wanted to take off went against the direction of the wind to give them more lift. Likewise, on landing they flew against the air, the moment their wheels touched the ground, acting as brakes, and stopped faster. The planes were parked all around as far away from the sea. Because there were no runways, several planes could fly at the same time, but a cloud covered the airfield from the dust they raised. It was close to the sea and easily attacked by Allied warships, without the Italians being able to react. The Italian anti-craft guns could not hit the enemy warships which kept the necessary distance from the coast and did not have the appropriate planes to bomb them. The few bombers they had flew at high altitudes and missed. On the contrary, the Germans, who in they Battle of Crete used the airport, with superior war tactics and modern airplanes, neutralized the Allied ships causing them great losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Note: After the war, Minas Papakostas immigrated to America where he gave us the aforementioned information.
