The Turks arrived in Lefko<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May 1922 an English ship landed at Lefko in Karpathos, from which three or four Englishmen disembarked to exhume the bones of their compatriots who lost their lives in an earlier naval accident in the area. At that time, Rigopoula P. Petropoulos and Vasiliki Malta happened to be in Lefko who mistook the Englishmen for Turks from the red uniforms were wearing. At that time, the Greek-Turkish war was going on in Asia Minor, and with their imaginations they thought that the Turks had come to plunder, destroy and slaughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The news reached Mesochori and upset the villagers, everyone ran for his life. Out of fear and despair they loaded their mules and donkeys with blankets, food, old men and small children, and ran to hide in the forests and caves to protect their families from the \u201cknife of the Turk\u201d. They even took the icon of the Holy Mother Vrysiani and hid it in a cave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the Turks to \u201cmultiply\u201d and their \u201ctempers\u201d getting wilder, the news reached Spoa. Fortunately, on that day came from Symi to Saint Nicholas bay Argyris Kastania\u2019s sailboat loaded with goods of Savvas Cassotis to sell in Karpathos. Panicked, the Spoitans went down to Saint Nicholas. When captain Argyris saw their panic, he boarded them as fast as he could. Fortunately, the boat was a large 100-ton bracera and all got boarded. There were several sacks of cod on the deck, and the cod in some of the sacks was torn to pieces by the trampling. In front of the Turk\u2019s knife, Captain Argyris did not care about the cod and quickly set sail for Pigadia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the same speed the reputation of the Turks, more inflated and with their dispositions wilder, reached Aperi, Volada, Othos and Pyles. Panic broke out, as folk poetry saved it, and everyone ran for cover, and many made their way to Pigadia, in the hope that the Italians would protect them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first the Italian commander of Karpathos Il Capitano Giovanni Idola was also worried and notified the governor in Rhodes. The Italians sent a destroyer loaded with troops from Rhodes, but before it reached Karpathos the Italians identified the \u201cTurks\u201d and the destroyer returned to its base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Englishmen accomplished their mission and departed. The Karpathians from the lower villages returned to their homes, and Kastanias with his bracera brought the Spoitans back to Saint Nicholas. Since the chopped cod could not be sold, the Spoitans bought it, expressing their appreciation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
