One hundred and twenty years we must go back to Arkasa of Karpathos to find his roots, where he was born in 1904.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1920, 16-year-old Nick Mathews set off from Karpathos for America, with only the prayers of his parents. His mother lit a candle in the church of Ypapanti in Arkasa and begged the Virgin Mary to illuminate and guide her child\u2019s steps on his long journey and the difficulties of life that awaited him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>America opened the door of sweat and bio wrestling to receive him. Hard work didn\u2019t scare him, as he used to tell me: \u201cI was never afraid of struggle and hard work because, here in America, they always lead you to success.\u201d At first, he worked in coal mines and iron factories, then in restaurants. With his hard work, honesty, diligence and intelligence, he won the love and appreciation of his superiors and soon became head chef in the most famous restaurants and hotels in America. In memory of her husband, Mary Mathews christened the cruiser Yorktown.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Great Depression of the 1930s found him as a rent collector in a New York apartment building. One day the landlord instructed him to \u201cthrow into the street\u201d, on the snow, the furniture of a family who could not pay the rent. His philanthropic heart was wounded and rebelled. From his salary he paid the rent owed by the family and, despite the crisis in the labor market, he left his job as a rent collector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1943, Nick Mathews and his wife, on their way to Florida, stopped in Yorktown VA, where, fascinated by the natural environment, they decided to settle there and open a small 35-seat restaurant. Over time, and thanks to the delicious food and excellent service it provided, the restaurant grew to become the world-famous Nick\u2019s Seafood Pavilion, with a capacity of 450 seats. Presidents, senators, congressmen, governors, ministers, generals and other celebrities from many states of America and countries of the world passed through it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over time and the restaurant\u2019s leaps and bounds, Mathews began to purchase large tracts of land, including the historic Yorktown battlefield. In memory of her husband, Mary Mathews christened the cruiser Yorktown.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Later, as the year 1976 approached and Bicentennial fever gripped America, many hotel and other tourism businesses turned their attention to Nick Mathews\u2019 property on the banks of the York River. But Matthew, who for no reason would accept the commercialization of a historic site, donated the battlefield to the state of Virginia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The area was turned into a national park, within which the state of Virginia built a magnificent museum. The Victory Center, one of America\u2019s most remarkable museums, is a hymn to the struggle for American independence and a tribute to a Greek American philanthropist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No one knows all Nick Mathews\u2019 donations because they amount to hundreds, and because he avoided talking about them. The most important ones were made for great national, social and cultural projects and the most out of love for fellow man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once upon a time, the city of Yorktown found itself in the unfortunate position of being unable to pay its electric bill and the electric company would cut off the power and the historic city would be plunged into darkness. (Yorktown used the liquor tax revenue to power the city. The taxes were collected by the state of Virginia and apportioned based on each city\u2019s population. The major television channels came to Yorktown to capture the historic city plunged in darkness and found it sailing through the light. Nick Mathews had paid the cost of its electricity for a whole year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christopher University, Newport VA, in recognition of services to the American nation and society, awarded Nick Mathews an honorary doctorate. After the awarding of the diploma, jokingly, he used to correct anyone who called him Mister Mathews by saying, \u201cDoctor Mathews please\u201d. He once confided to me: \u201cWhen I was a student in Karpathos, the teacher left me behind in the second grade of Primary School, now in my old age they made me a Doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The late Mathews was a simple man and felt immense love for his fellow man. He was intimate with presidents, kings, prime ministers, generals, ministers, governors, ambassadors and other dignitaries who passed through Nick\u2019s Seafood Pavilion, which he hosted for free. He was at the same time amenable to his compatriots and ordinary people, and not a Karpathian or a friend of his who passed by the restaurant and did not entertain him. In the restaurant there was a large table for 12 people, where he used to eat with his company. Whoever sat at that table never paid his bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At this table, every night after eleven when the restaurant closed, many of the staff, some passing Karpathians, and their friends would gather for dinner. During these hours, he liked to tell stories from his childhood and refer, in particular, to his father, Minas Mathews, who used to have a coffee shop in Finiki, and was a simple, pleasant and good-natured man, with the wisdom that distinguishes those who \u201cgraduate\u201d from the Great School of Nature and Life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/a187-Mathew12-Small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/a187-Mathew12-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-62564\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u03a4\u03bf \u03c6\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf Nick\u2019s Seafood Pavilion. The famous Nick\u2019s Seafood Pavilion.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These dinners of Nick Mathews lasted until the early hours of the morning and were accompanied \u2013 many times \u2013 by the Karpathian tunes played by Minas Papaminas on his lyre. And you could see, then, on the smiling face of Mathews, the shadow of nostalgia lingered, as his thoughts went back to his small village and he became \u2013 again \u2013 the sixteen-year-old kid who took the path of adventure with a unique \u201cequipment\u201d, the wishes of his parents and his faith in the protection of Ypapanti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1983, when the cruiser \u201cYorktown\u201d was about to be launched, among the dozens of prominent Americans proposed as sponsors of the ship, the Minister of the Navy preferred the Matthews\u2019 couple. A military plane, used to transport officials, took the Matthews to Pascagoula MS for the christening of the cruiser. But on the way, Nick Mathews died of a heart attack. Despite her great bereavement, his wife named \u201cYorktown\u201d in her husband\u2019s memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same plane returned with Nick Mathews body to Yorktown, where his funeral took place, with honors given by the American government to personalities of national service. Inside the US National Gallery in Washington DC is a painting depicting US President George Washington and the French General Marquis de Lafayette shaking hands on a hill in Yorktown. Half a century has passed since then, but Americans who visit Yorktown do not forget the Matthews, America\u2019s great benefactors.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>America\u2019s the most popular television channels and more than 50 newspapers, under the headlines \u201cYorktown mourns\u201d and \u201cHanded over the charity baton\u201d, published laudatory comments about Matthews\u2019 personality emphasizing his charity work. His great contribution to his adopted country was appreciated by America. On April 27, 1983, in an official session, the American Congress paid tribute to the memory of Nick Mathews, with federal congressman William Whitehurst as the speaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nick Mathews did not forget his small homeland either: with his own expenses, the second floor of Karpathos\u2019 Health Center was built and equipped, and he was the largest donor in the fundraising held in America by Metropolitan Apostolos for the monastery of Saint George in Vasse.
