In the decade of 1965-75, after the change in the immigration law of America, more than 200,000 Greeks who for years waited their turn to immigrate, finally came to America. The newcomers gave new blood to Homogenia, and at the same time kept their ties and interest with the birthplace they left behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus, after the fall of the Junta of the Colonels and the restoration of the Democracy in Greece, the expatriates continued their interest in the political events of Greece, wanting to participate in the electoral process of their distant homeland, as was the case with other Americans who had their origin from other countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then, the issue of the vote of the expatriates began. Every Greek politician, regardless of political party, coming to America offered to expatriates as a convenient gift the postal vote in recognition of their undivided interest and contribution to the homeland. But after their return to Greece, they looked at the political interest of their party with regards to the vote of the expatriates, and as the Romans said the matter went to the Hellenic Kalends (ad Kalendas Graecas).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fortunately, the Homogenia had other issues to deal with and did not put much faith in the promises of the Greek politicians. The Cyprus problem had arisen and wanting to influence American politics, the \u201cGreek Lobby\u201d was created and Homogenia turned its interest to the naturalization of newly arrived immigrants and to obtaining their right to vote in America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Half a century has passed since then, and the Greek Parliament gave expatriates the right to vote in the European elections. But, in the half century that has passed, few have remained of the former emigrants, and among their children and grandchildren there is no interest in the political events of their ancestors\u2019 homeland.
