The various events have been recorded by several Karpathians as they saw and studied them from their point of view. But the same events were experienced and recorded by non-Karpathians, and it is worth seeing them from their side as well. This article, and the subsequent ones, refer to the events that followed Italy\u2019s capitulation to the Allies, as recorded by Italian officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Francesco Imbriani<\/em><\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Colonel Francesco Imbriani\u2019s described historical events related to Karpathos during WWII are based on his report to the Italian Army General Staff, located in the \u201cArchivio dell\u2019 Ufficio Storico dello Stato maggiore dell\u2019 Esercito\u201d in Rome and other documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Imbriani takes command<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On April 1<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;1943, when Imbriani assumed military command, the Italian garrison in Karpathos consisted of the Siena Battalion under Lieutenant Colonel Arturo Agnesi, the Regina Battalion under Captain Eliodoro Jordano, artillery units under Major Vittore Comarin, anti-aircraft units under Captain Armando Amenduni, few planes at Afiarti airport and a small naval base at Tristomo, a total of around 3,000 men. Also, after the Battle of Crete, the Germans installed a radar on Saint Sunday\u2019s hill and listening post in Afiarti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/a190-Imbrian-6-Small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/a190-Imbrian-6-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-62847\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u0399\u03c4\u03b1\u03bb\u03af\u03b4\u03b5\u03c2 \u03b4\u03b1\u03c3\u03ba\u03ac\u03bb\u03b5\u03c2 \u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u039a\u03ac\u03c1\u03c0\u03b1\u03b8\u03bf, \u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03be\u03cd \u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03ce\u03bd \u03b7 Maria Teresa. Italian teachers in Karpathos, among them Maria Teresa.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Shortages<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there were shortages of transport, ammunitions, other supplies and food for the military personnel that could not be replenished. The food ration was reduced to a minimum and supplemented with wild vegetables that many soldiers spent hours a day gathering. Several soldiers wore wooden clogs made by themselves. A pair of boots was allocated to each unit to be used by the guards in turn when they went on lookout. Many soldiers walked barefoot to avoid wearing out their boots. Almost all had not seen their family for three years. Letters rarely arrived, although there was an airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Military and political situation<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even worse was the military and political situation prevailing in Italy and reflecting to the morale of the soldiers in Karpathos. The Allies had liberated North Africa from the Italo-Germans and landed in Sicily resulting in the overthrow of Mussolini and the formation of a government under General Badoglio. A feeling of hope took hold of the Italians who believed that the war was over, but also of uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>The Germans are coming<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, on September 6<sup>th<\/sup>, 1943, two days before the Badoglio government\u2019s announced Italy\u2019s Capitulation with the Allies, a German battalion of 800 men under Captain Bethege landed at Pigadia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 23:08 on September 8<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;1943, the official announcement of the armistice arrived from Rhodes and Bethege contacted Imbriani. The night was spent awake for officers and soldiers. Imbriani put the Italian forces on alert, but during the night a platoon of Germans took position up in Sisamo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the morning of September 9<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;Imbriani received orders from Rhodes not to hand over the armaments and fortifications to the Germans but not to take any hostile action against them, and if the German did not take hostile action to be allowed to land war materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the next two days the situation remained tense but both sides did not want to push the situation to war, and on the morning of September 11<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;Bethege announced to Imbriani an order from General Scaroina, under his command were the Italian military forces in Karpathos, to surrender their weapons. But, in the ensuing telephone conversation between Scaroina and Imbriani, Imbriani requested a written order, and at the same time he decided to resist and put all units on alert, Lt. Col. Agnesi expressed contrary opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>To surrender<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally on the morning of September 13<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;two seaplanes arrived with Lieutenant Biamataro bearing a written order of Admiral Inigo Campioni ordering Imbriani to hand over the military command of the Karpathos to the Germans but to remain as government representative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this capacity, Imbriani tried to help feed the Italian prisoners and transport them safely, as far as circumstances allowed, from Karpathos to Crete. Also, from the money reserves that existed and before the Germans confiscated them, he paid 10 months\u2019 wages to the Italian employees in Karpathos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Espionage<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In August 1943, when Imbriani was military commander, an Allied spy mission under Captain Lesly Stephen landed in Karpathos and Imbriani tasked Captain Pasquale Sarli to dismantle it without success. However, when, during the German occupation, the spy mission of Litos and Krasopoulos landed, Imbriani changed stance. Giannakas and Christoforos Sakellaridis approached him, and he agreed to work with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imbriani provided them with maps and information about the island\u2019s fortifications and gave them food to sustain the spies. Later, through the Italian teacher Maria Teresa, the lover of a German officer, he gathered information which he transmitted, through Marissalo Penna, Logothetis Diakidis, Christoforo Sakellaridis and Giannakas, to Spies. Also, when the body of Lieutenant Alberto Patruno was found, executed by the spies to avoid the worst, he instructed doctor Cutulo to \u201cdetermine\u201d that his death was a suicide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the spies, Imbriani informed the Allies that if they decided to land on Karpathos, he would order the Italians working for the Germans manning the coastal artillery to fire into the air. He asked to be evacuated from Karpathos, but his proposal was rejected, it would have disastrous results for the local population due to German retaliations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Departure<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On February 9<sup>th<\/sup>, 1944, after the departure of the last Italian prisoners and Lieutenant Stolzmann confiscated his personal money and valuables as \u201cspoils of war\u201d, the Germans airlifted Imbriani to Crete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From Crete, on March 20<sup>th<\/sup>, 1944, the Germans sent Imbriani to Athens and from there, in cattle wagons outside which was written in chalk \u201cBadoglio officers and soldiers\u201d, he was sent to Germany. On April 13<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;he arrived at a POW camp at K\u00fcstrin, where the situation was unbearable, he had to sell his wedding ring to survive from hunger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From K\u00fcstrin he was transferred to St. Botel (Bremiword), and on April 5<sup>th<\/sup>, 1945 was liberated by the Canadians at Gross Lesope bey Meppen (Emes). On the 2<sup>nd<\/sup>&nbsp;of September he left Germany and on the 8<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;of the same month he crossed the border into Italy at the Brenner Pass.
