Col. Arturo Agnesi who was accused by Col. Francesco Imbriani of not wanting to fight against the Germans after Italy surrendered to the Allies. Col. Agnesi was from the city of Spoleto in Perugia, Central Italy. He was a career officer and was serving in Karpathos as Commander of the Siena battalion when, on September 6, 1943, the Germans landed on Karpathos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the evening of the 8<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;of September, Agnesi also heard from the radio stationed at the Headquarters about the armistice, but they had not yet received an official announcement from Rhodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 8 p.m. on September 9 he received an order from Colonel Imbriani to move the Siena battalion from Afiarti, where it was encamped, to Pigadia. The order was immediately carried out and the battalion in full battle gear started from the camp at 9 p.m. for Pigadia. About six kilometers from the camp a motorcyclist came and handed him a note containing an order from Imbriani to return the battalion to the camp but to remain alert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the morning of September 10, Agnesi went to Headquarters and was ordered to move two heavy artillery guns together and two platoons of infantry to their defense. The order was executed immediately. He also placed another platoon of infantry along the road from Pigadia to the airport in case the road needed to be blocked. Imbriani did not carry out the order and replied that he would surrender only after a written order from the Commander of the Aegean Islands himself, Admiral Cambioni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the morning of the 13<sup>th<\/sup>, a seaplane arrived from Rhodes with an officer of the Rhodes Command who brought a written order from Admiral Campioni to surrender to the Germans. After receiving the order, Imbriani assembled the officers in the Command post, read them the order and conveyed to them to stop hostilities against the Germans. The order was carried out by all units with great sadness. Siena battalion was disarmed by the Germans, and on September 14<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;was ordered to move to Othos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On September 20 the battalion returned to Pigadia to board a steamer to be transported to Crete bound for Italy. But while the ship was in the bay of Pigadia it was bombed by five British planes. Agnesi was wounded by the shelling in the right arm and was admitted to the Italian Military Hospital where he remained hospitalized until January 30, 1944.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next day he was taken to Crete in a motorized fishing boat where he was held in a prisoner of war camp. Every three days he was given a small tin can of Italian beef and every week a 1500-gram loaf of hard German bread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On March 4, 1944 he was taken to Athens and on March 18<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;he escaped from prison and was able to return to Italy where he joined the forces of the Socialist Republic (in Northern Italy under Mussolini).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He arrived in Italy on April 10, 1944 and was appointed Commander of the Labor battalion (Fuenza) of Ravenna, which he did not found himself.
