The 76th anniversary of the Union of the Dodecanese with Greece was celebrated in America<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every year when March 7th approaches, for the Dodecanese all over the world, the clock of history stops and goes back to ancient times, since the Dodecanese have been an important and integral part of Hellenism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Dodecanese participated in the Trojan War and in the Classical era they have Cleobulus of Rhodes, one of the seven wise men of Ancient Greece, and Hippocrates of Kos, the father of Medicine. In the Hellenistic era they have the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of antiquity, and in the Byzantine era the monastery of Saint John the Theologian in Patmos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the following six centuries of slavery (Venetian, Turkish and Italian rule), the Dodecanese kept their Greekness unadulterated and participated in the revolution of 1821, culminating in the holocaust of Kasos. They resist the attempt to de-Hellenize the Dodecanese by the Italians and participate in the Greco-Italian war with Alexander Diakos, the first Greek officer who lost his life on the Albanian front, and with the Regiment of Dodecanese Volunteers. The struggle continues with the participation of the expatriates from the Dodecanese, until the dawn of \u201cThe Great Day\u201d, March 7, 1948.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In America<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simultaneously with the establishment of the Dodecanese Federation, in 1950, the annual celebration of the Integration of the Dodecanese with Greece was established in America. In the first year, the Divine Liturgy and doxology were held at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New York by the then Archbishop of North and South America, Michael. American political and government officials, Greek diplomats, the Kasians shipowners with Manolis Kouloukoudis, many Dodecanese and other compatriots attended. This was followed by a cultural event in the community hall with speeches on the historic anniversary. The celebration of the historic anniversary continued with the same national enthusiasm, the pioneers of the Dodecanese struggle that they conducted in America were still alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 1970 the festivities in New York were moved from Manhattan to Astoria where the center of Hellenism in America had moved. In the 76 years that have passed, the pioneers of the struggle have passed into eternity, even the children who were born slaves and lived to see the day of freedom have dwindled, and those who are left are enjoying the winter sunsets of their lives living with their memories. But two new generations have been added, their children and grandchildren. Every year when the anniversary of the Integration comes, the Dodecanese everywhere, with the same patriotic enthusiasm, celebrate the \u201cGreat Day\u201d, the strongest link that connects them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year the festivities began on Sunday March 3rd in Connecticut by the Pan-Rhodian Apollo society, in Baltimore by the Dodecanese in Maryland, in Melbourne by the Dodecanese in Australia and in other Dodecanese communities around the world. Events continued on March 10 in Astoria, New York and other Dodecanese parishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Astoria<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As it has been established since 1970, the celebration began with a service in the Cathedral of Saint Demetrius in Astoria, New York, by fathers Gideon Varitimos and Andreas Vythoulkas, followed by \u201cartoclasia\u201d ceremony for the surviving Dodecanese and a memorial service for the known and unknown heroes of the Dodecanese Freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The celebration continued with a reception and a cultural program in the \u201cPatridis\u201d event hall of the Community, which was full of Dodecanese and other expatriates, with the Vice-President of the Federation, Nikos Kartalis, as introducer. The event began with a prayer by Fathers Gideon and Andreas and with the recitation of the National Anthems of Greece and America by Zoe Vasilogiorgis and Yiannis Pavlakis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Afterwards, the president of the Dodecanese Federation Maria Maragou referred to the meaning of the celebration and awarded honorary diplomas to Timoleon Kokkinos, Manolis Cassotis and Demosthenes Triantafyllou for their contribution to the Dodecanese Federation and the Greek Community of America. The main speaker of the day was Dr. educator Irini Grapsia with reference to the Hellenicity of the Dodecanese from ancient times to the present day and the struggles of the Dodecanese to obtain their freedom after six centuries of slavery and emphasized that even today they are fighting for the progress and future of Hellenism everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program continued with the recitation of \u201cOur Blue Sea\u201d by Markos Pavlakis and Irini Perselis, followed by traditional dances from the dance groups of Kasos, Kalymnos, Nisyros, Symi and the Dodecanese Youth. Anastasis Sifonios (violin) and Thanasis Kavounidis (lute) participated in the traditional orchestra from the Dodecanese Youth. In closing, Nikos Kartalis thanked those who worked for the success of the celebration and those who honored it with their presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
