Islands<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>By Manolis Cassotis<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the liberation and integration of the Dodecanese in Greece, the establishment of cultural institutions began with the aim of developing and promoting the history and culture of the Dodecanese from ancient times until today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among these institutes, the House of Letters and Arts of the Dodecanese (SGTD), founded in 1970, has a prominent place, which among others organized 22 cultural symposia on all the islands of the Dodecanese and in Attica. It also published 28 volumes of the \u201cDodecanese Chronicles\u201d, 44 independent publications and the \u201cRhodian Letters\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From time to time, distinguished historians have written voluminous books and important historical studies on Rhodes and some of the other islands of the Dodecanese, aimed at specialist readers. But a concise book on the history of each island of the Dodecanese, for the wider reading public, was missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SGDT decided to fill this gap with the publication of the \u201cHistory of Rhodes\u201d (2017) by Manolis Makris, which in its 220 pages covers the historical path of Rhodes from prehistoric times to the present day. The book was accepted by people in general and especially by the High school teachers. And immediately the idea of writing a book of similar size (around 300 pages) was born for each island of the Dodecanese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this effort, the SGTD found support in the Dodecanese community of America, with which it had ties since the time of the late Manolis Athanasiadis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the beginning it was considered necessary to translate and publish each book in English as well, given that the third and fourth generation of the Dodecanese in diaspora are not familiar with the Greek language. Also, the publication of the books in English will provide the opportunity to supply the 50 largest libraries in America and Universities with Greek programs with the history of each island. At the same time, the English edition also serves a third purpose, because every year five million tourists visit the Dodecanese and those who are interested will be able to read and know the history of each island they visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, after the publication of the \u201cHistory of Rhodes\u201d, Manolis Cassotis and Demosthenes Triantafillou undertook the translation and financing of the English edition. This was followed by the writing of the \u201cHistory of Karpathos\u201d by Manolis Makris, with translation and financing of the two editions by the brothers Manolis and John Cassotis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, the writing of the \u201cHistory of Symi\u201d by Costas Kontos, the \u201cHistory of Kasos\u201d by Nikos Konstantinidis and the \u201cHistory of Nisyros\u201d by Demosthenes Triantafyllou is in progress. We are also pleased to announce that the Symian Association of New York \u201cAegle\u201d has decided to finance both editions of the \u201cHistory of Symi\u201d.
