in Karpathos after the arrival of the Germans on September 6, 1943 and the announcement of Italy\u2019s Capitulation to the Allies. In the same file of Imbriani\u2019s and Agnesi\u2019s reports, is the memorandum of Maresciallo Enrico Penna to Imbriani referring to the morale of the Italian troops after Italy\u2019s Capitulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Enrico Penna<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enrico Penna served for several years in Karpathos during the Italian occupation of the Dodecanese, and during the German occupation he was a member of the Imbriani-Penna-Diakidis-Sacellaridis-Giannaka chain that transmitted the information gathered by the teacher Maria Teresa to the spies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was in Karpathos on October 5, 1944 and participated in the Italian delegation that negotiated with the Pancarpathian Committee the handover of power. After the arrival of the British he was transferred to a prisoner of war camp in Egypt and at the end of the war he was repatriated to Italy. In the memorandum he submitted to Imbriani on September 24, 1944 he states:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cIn accordance with your request and interest in knowing the present morale and fighting spirit of our troops, as a result of the armistice concluded by Italy with the Anglo-American forces, the situation is as follows:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Before the armistice, and immediately after the loss of Sicily and the landing of the Anglo-Americans on the Italian peninsula, especially among most of the officers, the belief had been established that the war was lost for us and that it was useless to continue it and to resist further, which would increase the ruins of our cities and industry and cause casualties among the civilian population. The reasons adduced by these officers, in support of their opinion, were various, such as the great superiority of the means at the disposal of the Anglo-Americans, the (Italian) political system, and so on. However, these reasons were pretentious and showed the officers\u2019 lack of will to fight.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The soldiers came mainly from the South (Italy) and remained inactive for a long period of time with the result that the fact had a corrosive effect on the morale required to be able to successfully face any dynamic military action. They knew the superiority of the Anglo-Americans and were affected by our defeat. However, I firmly believe that out of great and generous love for the Motherland, they would give their most valuable possessions if they were morally supported by their superiors.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>As a result of this situation, officers and soldiers alike were relieved to hear that an armistice had been concluded. They felt liberated and therefore free to return to their homeland. None of them wanted to hear if someone tried to make these people understand that the war was not over since our Motherland was still a field of fierce fighting.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This was the situation on the evening of September 12, 1943, due to the disagreement, between the German armed forces and our own Administration of the island, over the surrender of arms. At all times all units of the army had to be committed and prepared for this purpose.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>In the Siena Battalion there were cases of disobeying orders to participate in military operations, with the justification that the war is already over and the soldiers are returning home. The incidents are well known and the military men talk about them freely among themselves, especially after the handover of weapons to the German armed forces.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I close by reporting the following experience: On September 20, the Siena Battalion boarded a steamer bound for Chania, and while the ship was waiting in Pigadia Bay to leave, it was bombed by Anglo-American aircraft with many casualties, dead and wounded. In the evening of the same day three or four soldiers with the officers of the artillery of the Prophet Elias, which was committed to support us on the night of the 12th, if we had engaged the Germans, commenting on the destruction which resulted from the bombardment of the steamer exclaimed: \u2018They deserve it!
