Manolis Cassotis<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The previous four articles described the positions of senior Italian officers and officials serving in Karpathos, on the events that followed the Allied landings in Sicily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Colonel Imbriani claims that he was prepared to resist the Germans who on September 6, 1943 landed on Karpathos, but was forced to obey the order he received from Admiral Campioni to hand over the military command of the island to the Germans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lt. Col. Agnesi claims that, after the Germans landed, he took all the measures ordered by Imbriani and then obeyed Admiral Campioni\u2019s order. But he went to Northern Italy which was under Mussolini and the protection of the Germans, taking command of the Fuenza Labor Battalion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Italian military chaplain blames the officers who, despite the oath they gave to the King and the soldiers\u2019 will to fight, surrendered to the Germans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the contrary Maresciallo Enrico Penna testifies that the majority of officers and soldiers believed that the war was lost and further resistance was useless, and were relieved to hear of the armistice, feeling that they could return home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from these, there are and follow the testimonies of other officers that add more light to the situation that prevailed in Karpathos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Return to \u201cIthaca\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the landing of the Allies in Sicily a feeling of insecurity was created among the Italians serving in Karpathos. They knew the worst was coming and preferred to be at home near their own people rather than isolated in Karpathos, and those who had the means tried to find a way and excuse to return to Italy, as the following testimonies show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Italian priest reports:&nbsp;<em>\u201cI performed services in the square of the Governor\u2019s Office with the chaplain Don Luigi Accurso, who immediately afterwards left on leave and never returned.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The civil engineer Giuseppe Pizzigoni who had undertaken the execution of technical works at the airport writes to his wife:&nbsp;<em>\u201cNow the replacement of our captain has just arrived who also left because, as we were told, he learned that his father was very serious, our team has thinned out.\u201d \u201cThey live in Italy in peace, lucky them!\u201d. \u201cThe completion of the work is in progress, so my presence here will no longer be necessary. It is the first and most difficult step of my return. I will do anything to be sent to my home or near my home. I am spending my last days in Karpathos. Courage then!\u201d.&nbsp;<\/em>And despite the censorship that exists regarding military and political events, he adds:&nbsp;<em>\u201cWe see the enemies approaching. We are in great turmoil, but it will soon be over, and in any case the change will please everyone, regardless of what the future holds\u2026\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lieutenant Michele Memola reports:&nbsp;<em>\u201cA cry of joy is heard from someone who was standing, he had me more than anyone in his heart because I came \u2026 my excellence, as if it depended on me, to replace him to return to his homeland\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u0391rmistizio<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Memola reports, the Italians gladly accepted Badoglio\u2019s announcement of the Allies\u2019 armistice with Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI found Aldo Patruno very excited and without hesitation he called out to me:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>-Mussolini has fallen!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I did not understand and repeats:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u2013 Yes, Mussolini fell, and Badoglio took his place!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I was ecstatic.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>-Here, look! and he showed me the photograph of Badoglio in the place of Mussolini, while in the wastebasket were the photographs of Mussolini cut into very small pieces.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI ran to the Captain who confirmed it with satisfaction at the extraordinary and impressive event. Stunned and speechless more than ever, I returned to Patruno, who, filled with indescribable joy, sent a telegram full of lively joy to his parents. All the soldiers seemed satisfied with the new regime and thought that the war would not be long.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe Secretaries, Buannotti and Giovannelli, remarked that according to Badoglio\u2019s declaration, the war would go on, we would keep our word (given to the Germans) and win.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI returned to Kastello to listen to foreign news, especially from our enemies (London\u2019s BBC). They broadcast Badoglio\u2019s proclamation. Our hearts pound, we lose our voices, our legs tremble, and everyone mutters \u201ctruce\u201d. Someone tries to shout from joy, as if he was going to return to his homeland, but he brakes because no one dares to respond with a sad and cheap betrayal of our former allies.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Germans are coming<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the meantime, the Germans came to Karpathos and Memola was transferred to Saint Sunday to supervise the construction of fortifications. On the same hill, after the Battle of Crete, there was a German outpost with radar monitoring the Allied movements in the Eastern Mediterranean. From there Memola continues:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe Germans here were much kinder than those at Kastello, aware of our numerical superiority. A corporal praised Mussolini to made me understand the great harm that Badoglio did to Italy, who was a good general, but not a politician.
