The Italians in Karpathos during the war years: Prisoners and Fugitives<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Imbriani\u2019s report, on September 13, 1943, 2550 Italian soldiers surrendered to the Germans. The German plan envisaged, within two weeks, their transfer to Crete and from there to Piraeus. Those who wanted to continue the war with the Germans would be transferred to Northern Italy, which was under Mussolini and the protection of the Germans. The rest would be taken to POW camps in Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of the soldiers, 56 who served in the artillery declared themselves volunteer soldiers and stayed in Karpathos, along with another 34 unarmed auxiliaries. In addition, there remained the Police, the Customs Guards, some other employees, and a few dozen military prisoners brought by the Germans from Rhodes before they left Karpathos. For a while the Italian teachers also stayed until they were transferred to Rhodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport of prisoners<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 17, two cargo ships arrived, in which soldiers of the Regina Battalion boarded and transported to Crete. Two days later one of the ships returned to pick up soldiers of the Siena battalion. But on September 20 the ship was bombed by 3-4 English planes, 12 soldiers lost their lives and 72 were wounded. The next day the ship departed with the rescued, but never returned, on its return it was bombed by Allied planes and sank. There was no other means, the remaining Italians had to be transported by caiques and smaller boats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preferred to stay<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the bombing of the ship, the Italians who before the armistice were trying to find an excuse to return to Italy, are now trying to find a way to stay in Karpathos for more security. Lieutenant-Colonel Agnesi, as he claims, on October 20, 1943, was injured in the bombing of the ship in his right hand and remained hospitalized in Karpathos until January 30, 1944!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lieutenant Enio Grimaldi, as he himself states, was ill, and the Director of the elementary schools, with the agreement of the political representative of the Italian Government, offered him work in typing various circulars which he sent to the schools of the other villages. (After the arrival of the Germans the Italian schools ceased to function. Grimaldi settled with his assistant Rosseli in a house in Aperi and stayed there until the British came on October 17, 1944 and took him to Egypt).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the bombardment of the ship, the Germans ordered the Italians who had gathered in Pigadia to move to Aperi and Othos, they were walking heavily laden and mixed with Pigadiotes, they too were moving for more safety. They started from Pigadia and took them seven hours to reach Aperi because they were heavy loads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After two or three weeks they were brought back to Pigadia and put in prisoner camps that they set up in Damatria, Kyra Panagia and Telegrafos. In the first two they lived in tents and in Telegrafos in huts that the prisoners made from the pines trees from the surrounding hills. They lived in miserable conditions until a ship was found to send them to Crete and at great risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They were saved<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the evening of October 23rd, a steamer left with 60 Italian soldiers and 10 officers among them Captains Mancuso and Di Sandro, Lieutenants Albertini, Scaramuggino, Basosi, Falciani, and when they got near Crete the steamer was stopped by an English submarine and forced to go to Africa, and were saved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Runaways<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under these conditions, some Italians who had the courage found the only solution to escape to save themselves. A difficult decision, they were on an island isolated in the Karpathian sea surrounded by the Germans. Most found and put on civilian clothes and dispersed to the surrounding areas in stables and caves. Many went to central and northern Karpathos for more safety. For all the hatred the Karpathians felt against Fascist Italy, they were treated as petitioners in the ancient sense of the word. They hid them at the risk of their lives and fed them with the little food they had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alessandro Orofino<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Germans issued a proclamation notifying the escapees that those who did not surrender by a certain deadline would be executed on the spot as soon as they were caught. Most, due to the difficulty of survival and the risk of execution, surrender before the deadline. Alessandro Orofino, who did not surrender, was hiding in Lorous in Aperi and was arrested after treason. They executed him near the bridge of Volada and buried him in a pit that they made him dig himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alberto<\/em><\/strong> <\/em><\/strong>Patruno<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lieutenant Alberto Patruno fled to Mesochori, where at first, he was protected by the police station master Prigadiere Michele. But when the Germans asked him to hand him over, he sent him to the spies and pretended that he escaped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Germans took ten hostages from Mesochori and Spoa and threatened to execute them if Patruno was not found dead or alive. The spies, to ward off the threat of the Germans and the discovery of their mission, found the only solution to kill Patruno and throw his body into a ravine. On the recommendation of Colonel Imbriani, the military doctor Cutulo, who performed the autopsy, \u201cdetermined\u201d that Patruno died of a heart attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Escapes with row boats<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A group of 15-20 Italians, from those who went to Mesochori, decided to leave in a large rowboat from Kafkalos to Astakia and from there to the northern Dodecanese, which until then had not been occupied by the Germans. They started at night with the help of some locals, but due to bad weather they were forced to return the same night. The days passed and the weather did not change. The Italians despaired returned to Pigadia and surrendered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the night of September 27, three Italian soldiers set off from Tristomo in a small rowboat with a rudimentary sail and a steering oar bound for Kastelorizo. They were lost in the sea and ran out of water when a wave overturned the barrel of water they had with them. On the morning of October 7, they were found by an English destroyer which took them to Alexandria. They were first taken to the hospital to recover from the poisoning they got by drinking their own urine instead of water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sergio Gattulli <\/em><\/strong>f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On November 14, Sergio Gattulli escaped from Pigadia and fled to Saint George in Vatses, where he was hiding with the help of the Vasilarakis family in the trunk of an olive tree. After five months he was betrayed and forced to move to Othos where he hid in a hiding place, built for him in the basement of an uninhabited house. But later, again after betrayal, the Italian carabinieri, working for the Germans, came and arrested him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the meantime the war scene changed to the detriment of Germany and the Germans did not execute Sergio, but they sent him to Rhodes, and in September when the Germans began to withdraw from Karpathos they brought him back, where with the help of a German anti-Nazi he managed to escape. He was hiding again in Vatses until the Germans left and Karpathos was liberated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michele Memola<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second Lieutenant Michele Memola was one of the Italian escapees who went to Mesochori. Although the Germans had proclaimed him for 10,000 lire and were putting their lives at risk, the Mesochoritans offered him shelter and food as much as they could from the little food they had, which he supplemented with wild fruits and herbs. At first, they hid him in a pit and a cave and finally in a remote stable in the bay of Makris Gialos. In Mesochori he was known as the \u201cTenendaki\u201d, because of his rank and his physical statue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On February 17, 1944, increasingly hunted, he surrendered to the Italian police station master in Mesochori who handed him over to Lieutenant Stolzmann, he interrogated him and imprisoned him in Menetes. A few months later he was sent to a POW camp in Germany, from where he was liberated by the Allies and returned home on July 14, 1945.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Memola never forgot the people who helped him, with whom he corresponded frequently and twice, in 1968 and 1971, he visited Karpathos to thank them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later in 2017, his son Massimo Memola also visited Karpathos to meet and thank the descendants of the people who helped his father. At the same time, Massimo wrote a book entitled \u201cIL TENENTAKI\u201d recounting his father\u2019s adventure, which the Karpathian Research Center included in the publications translated by Manolis Cassotis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following year, a memorial service was held at Panagia Vrysiani in Mesochori in memory of Michele Memola and those who helped him survive, followed by a ceremony in the church hall and the book presentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport of prisoners from Rhodes to Karpathos<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the landing of the Allies in Normandy, the scene of the war began to change dramatically against Germany and, among others, the Germans, in September 1944, decided to leave Karpathos and move to Rhodes. In the third of the four evacuation missions, they transported to Karpathos from Rhodes several dozen Italian prisoners who, for some time after Italy\u2019s war with the Allies, surrendered or were captured by the Germans, until on October 17, 1944, the British came and transferred them to Egypt after the withdrawal of the Germans from Karpathos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
