The documents talk about the port of Karpathos in WWII<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the airport in Afiarti, the most important project, of strategic value for Karpathos, was the main port of the island in Pigadia. That is why, on the eve of WWII, the Italians extended the pier to be able to accommodate and the largest caiques of the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The British also realized the strategic value of the port, and as soon as Italy entered the war, sea and air attacks against the port began. Allied attacks continued even after Italy\u2019s capitulation to the Allies and the occupation of Karpathos by the Germans. On September 20, 1943, Allied planes bombed the port where there happened to be a cargo ship with Italian prisoners the Germans destined to send to Crete, of which 12 died and 70 were injured. Later, on November 2, an Allied submarine dropped a torpedo against the harbor causing serious damage to the pier and surrounding the houses and sinking two or three caiques that happened to be in the harbor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the 32 documents we located in the National Archives at Kew, London is the report of Australian Petty Officer Gannly John Archibald who was on board on one of the planes that attacked the harbor on 20 September 1943. From this document are extracts from Archibald\u2019s report that follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe had completed the port attack and had proceeded about 25 miles when the plane\u2019s starboard engine suddenly stopped. We were about 30 meters above the water at the time, and immediately the aircraft lost height \u201cbouncing\u201d into the sea, and then turned sharply and went sideways into the water. The aircraft sank instantly, and I was under water. I managed to get out through a crack in the back of the fuselage. Pilot Kennedy, and navigator Lebich, also managed to get out and we all got into the lifeboat which had been disengaged from the aircraft and floated. F\/Sgt. Fisher did not make it out and his body was later recovered by the Italians who came for us. We were about 3-4 miles offshore when we crashed, and we could see rowboats coming offshore in our direction, so we sat in the dinghy and waited. The time was about 11:30. There were three row boats, all manned by Italian soldiers and Greek civilians. And while our row boats went ashore, the others continued to search for Fisher\u2019s body, which they found a little later. We tried artificial respiration, and a doctor <\/em>(Andreas Lambros) came, but he couldn\u2019t help in anything.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe doctor was Greek and very helpful. We were able to converse with him through French and he spoke to the Italians on our behalf, and they agreed not to hand us over to the Germans. We were hosted in the house of a Greek patriot <\/em>(Stelios Farmakidis) and although food was very scarce, they deprived themselves of it to feed us. Lebich had been seriously injured in the crash and had lost a considerable amount of blood, the doctor visited him every day and did all he could.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur plan was to get a boat and try to get to Kos or Leros. But as Lebich was too weak to move, we decided that only one of us should go and try to find help, while the other should remain with our sick companion.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOn September 26 a Greek patriot arrived in a rowboat. He had escaped from Crete and agreed to take one of us to Leros. However, we were discouraged by the Italians from making the trip as the boat was too small and they did not consider it safe for two passengers. But they wrote a letter to the Commander of an Italian garrison on a nearby island asking him to send a motorboat to pick us up and the Greek owner of the rowboat agreed to hand it over.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe next morning, however, we were surrounded by several Italian soldiers, and it was evident from their attitude that they had come for us. I managed to escape and reach the house of another Greek friend of mine, but they followed me and captured me. Then they took all three of us in a small boat to Pigadia, where they handed us over to the German garrison. The trip took two days.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The three rescued crew members, after their transfer to Pigadia on 27 September 1943, were sent to the Dulag Luft POW camp in Germany, where they remained from 1 \u2013 10 November 1943. The next day were transferred to the Stalag IVB POW camp, Muhlberg, from where they were liberated by the Russians on April 23, 1945 and on July 3, 1945 were handed over to the British.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Airman Fisher was buried in the cemetery of the church of Saint Nicholas in Diafani and later his bones were transferred to the British cemetery in Rhodes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
